(WC)Isner beats (26)Nieminen 6-7 7-6 7-6 6-4 to win first GS match

Good tie-break's player like Nieminen wasn't able to overcome "tie-break machine" Isner :) Isner served 34 aces and didn't lose service game (saved break points in four games).
Nieminen was two points away from winning 2nd (6:5, 30-0) and 3rd set (5:5 in the TB).

Isner made the break with a backhand passing shot, Agassi style.

Great debut at the US Open.

Seems like he has a slight muscle strain or a little cramp because he keeps stretching it and is not sitting down at the change of ends. Shouldn't be anything to worry about.

:yeah:

Excellent way for John to get his first win at a major. :D

John was really shaky in the first two sets but he picked up his game in a big way for the last two, even winning some rallies and cleaning up on his volleys.

34 aces from John and averaged 129 on his first serve and 115 on the second, maxed out at 143. John converted on his first break point opportunity and saved all 7 that he faced. He also had 2 MPs at *3-5 on Jarkko's serve (1/3 on BPs for the match).

Rik de Voest is next.

Well Isner showed that he still isn't scared of winning matches on a big stage.

Nieminen is a decent returner and he didn't break Isner in 23 tries, that's a good serve.

I have to admit tht I hate this Isner.....he hardly can hit 3 straight shots in a rally....such a disgrace to tennis.....I am sorry if i offended someone but seriously thts absolute crap.....its like watching a serving machine nothing else....after watching isner play, i am actually starting to appreciate young's game....atleast he possess some skills....watever...

:bigclap: John. This is a very exciting win for him. Nice to see that he got his nerves under control too.

Disgrace for tennis that Jarkko lost to this guy. At least it was the only bad thing that happened today.

These guys take all the enjoyment out of tennis. After five years of watching Andy Roddick's boring game, along comes Isner who has even less to offer. Will Americans ever get another champion like Connors and McEnroe who can actually do something on a tennis court other than serve and wait for the tiebreaker? Come on Donald Young, step up. Save us from having to watch John Isner and Sam Querrey serve their way through every match.

3rd round match against FedEx is very probable... What an another amazing tournament for him. In the 1st round doubles Isner will play against The Bryans, potential 3rd round singles against Federer

I bet you can't wait till he plays a guy who returns inside the baseline in a slam. The ace count would be one for the record books no doubt.

I wait more for a match with 5 tie-breaks because it has never happened. There was a good opportunity today but Nieminen had service breakdown :o

Well obviously that's a pretty unlikely thing to happen and I think there's close to 0% of it this year but with the right draw Isner is certainly one of your best chances.

I think Karlovic has also a chance to do it. For example against Roddick in the 3rd round.

Give him more time. Of course at his height his baseline tennis won't be pretty to watch but he has time to improve all-court game. This is scarcely his 5th ATP tournament!

Thanks, I'm not sure how it translates into euro betting either but I'm guessing they're pretty big odds right?. I've been tipping him left, right and centre to all my friends but I never went and put the bet on myself... idiot:sad:

well done John, 114 mph as second serve average speed, that is sick and way more amazing than his 128 mph with his first serve.

To those who say that he is boring and all serve, I guess you love having every player be a baseliner ballbasher and headcase, no?

I'd rather see a variety of different styles winning matches, this is what separates the men's game from the women's.

No, im sober, man.

I was even watching some Mirnyi today and was impressive with some of those volleys

Now, im not going to go around cheering Steps and Max now, but i do enjoy watching many different types of play, whether it is baseline bashing, big serving, volleys, heavy topspin, moonball, or some combination

but he is merely one type of play for winning matches. I'm also a fan of Roddick, a completely different style of play, Isner, call bandwagon all you want, Nole and Canas, who are more grinder/retriever type players, although Nole has got some serious firepower, and others.

Regardless of who my fave is, I can still appreciate variety of styles.

Hell, Nadal volleys with a Western grip

First time I saw Isner play. I expected his groundstrokes to be worse, really. He can follow his serve up with his forehand very well and he does have a fully hit backhand (unlike Karlovic). And the most impressive element in his serve seems to be the second serve.
