I guess, got lucky, because he really doesn't look good off the ground and awkward at the net

He got lucky with errors from Jarkko. 19 aces already for him with 2 from Jarkko.

Check out the old thread regarding his DC run. If you can get through the BS you'll see this has been stated before:) Except that he was good at the net in DC from what I watched. Groundies and side to side movement needs work but he is rather tall;) Also not sure he has the stamina for a slam.

EDIT- Jonathan will you take care of me when my mind has left me?

I don't care... I like him anyway. He's a southern boy, like me. :)

51 unforced errors to 13 for Nieminen.

His groundstrokes are out today, especially his volley. Probably too tight playing in Armstrong and his first Slam match.

No reason to debate who has better ground strokes between Isner and Karlovic. Neither's are very good so lets just leave it at that.

He's used to winning third set tie-breaks, he's in unchartered territory now! :p

Isner is an exagerated form of Roddick. Taller, Bigger Serves, Worse Groundstrokes.

His groundies and movement are pretty average but I expext him to have a better career than Karlovic and crack the top 20 at some point with some decent coaching.

He could give Fed nightmares in 3R too

Isner seems to be a better fighter than Dr. Ivo. This is a signal that Isner should win more important tie-breaks than Ivo and avoids very poor Karlovic's five-set record. I expect also a better career for Isner (excluding clay courts).

I sort of agree with you....

the guy can volley, and honestly, I believe that serve & volley is one of the prettiest styles on tennis

if you don't like the guy don't waste your time on him
but call him a disgrace to tennis is sort of disrespectful to him

just IMO

its not Isners fault tennis has evolved into a sport in which he can do well. maybe your idea of what is disgraceful to tennis is simply outdated.

I think a big difference is that Isner hits more 1st serves in the TBs and also just overall goes for more on 2nd serve. He seems to have more double faults but ends up winning more 2nd serve points. I'd like to see Ivo pull the Phillipousis strategy and just go for two 1st serves and serve and volley all points. Ivo almost never double faults and I don't think that's a good thing.

Interesting observation, I agree with this. I've got fresh in my mind Ivo's match against Federer in Montreal. And I was pissed off because Ivo was playing very conservative on 2nd serve  Moreover he was staying on the baseline on Federer's serve all the time :o

You're quite right about the FH. I think Karlovic is better at the net, however. Give Isner a chance though guys, his game has a lot of time to improve at this level. His first Grand Slam, MD or quallies.
