Fish def Karlovic 7-6(3) 6-4

Ivo didn't look too interested out there. Negative body language all along the match, even after breaking Fish in the first set. A lot of sloppy errors and no look at the Fish serve at all anymore in the second set. Commentators suggested the heat was taking on Ivo.
Good job from Fish getting his first career win against the towering croat. He got enough balls back in court asking the question to his opponent, who failed to answer on a lot of occasions.

Mardy has ended the streak of losing 7 consecutive tie-breaks to Ivo. Karlovic like yesterday, wasted set point in the first set.

No Fish fry today I see;) The tournament directors must be estatic to have him in the finals. I am surprised at his play this week since he looked so sloppy in Cinci. Anyway good luck in the finals and best to Dr Ivo :hatoff:

Mardy must be wishing he'd picked himself in Fantasy Tennis this week

Always nice to see the giant servers lose. :)

I didn't bet on this match. I just think Fish is an undeserved finalist and this pisses me off.

Anyway, let's see where you are during the US Open final with no American in it ;)

Very disappointing loss and poor performance today

He even broke Fish, served for the set,but when he was unable to take advantage of that, you know he played very bad and was probably very tired from yesterday :awww:

Rest up Ivo,and good luck in the USO.

Set point wasted here, match point saved there - this is his tennis :) It's a normal thing when you play so many 7-5 or 7-6 sets.

Why is he so undeserved if he's beaten all of his opponents to get there? If nobody's taking this little tournament seriously enough to want to win it then why is that Fish's fault?

Anyway, let's see where you are during the US Open final with no American in it ;)
I'll be watching it, just as I watch all tennis tournaments on my TV with or without the Americans. :nerner:

Maybe, I didn't see 10th game. For sure Ivo had set point at 5:3 on Fish's serve and yesterday one (of two setpoints) on serve against Andreev in the tie-break.

Typical choke by Ivo. He can't break his opponent. Today he had big chances in the 1st set, but he of course wasted them. I hope he will win over Clement next week, but if he will play like today, he lose in 4-5 sets. Something like 6:7, 7:6, 4:6, 5:7 :wavey:

he was lucky getting past volandri who choked to serve out the match. when was the last time karlovic choked serving for the set? you can't tell me it was all fish's work in these two match. he got very lucky which means he's an undeserved finalist.

Mayer had match point on serve in the 1st round, so Mardy has won this week three sets when the opponent was serving for the set (twice it was "serving for the match") :rolls:

You are correct, only one set point. Ivo didn't even get into the game when he served at 5-4 in the 1st set, I think he lost it at 15.

Not one of his better matches, let's hope he rests up now for the Open.

Nice win for Mardy....even if it was against a clearly disinterested Karlovic(due to back/heat/fear of being filleted by the Fishmaster). Sure, he'll get destroyed by James in the final....but it's nice to see Americans occassionally not sucking.

I suppose as far as Fish is concerned, once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is positive action.

Bilbo has a point about his returning, in the ATP stats for this year he is 69th out of 70 players in points won returning first serve (with only an impaired Tojo below him). That would hardly matter against someone like Volandri, but against Karlovic.... well, it certainly explains the head-to-head going into this match.

Karlovic looked like he was desperately trying to end the points as quickly as possible. He was definitely struggling out there.

As for Fish, it has been a great week for him, and he has to like his chances at the U.S Open more than he did before.

Bilbo

Fish only broke Karlovic because he served 5 straight 2nd serves. Usually Ivo has a very high 1st serve %. He must have been tired as hell to serve this badly. A day before his serve was on fire.

I think many people overrate Fish's performance of this week. He had one convincing win on the road to the final.

in his post match conference, ivo said that he felt like shit. he had a meal really late last night and then couldn't sleep and he woke up with a headache. he also said mardy played a very solid match

Yes, Karlovic felt awfull during that match, so it's understandable that he wanted to finish points ASAP, so it's ridiculos to see remarks here how Ivo was uninterested, rushing for USopen etc.
For gods sake he ain't top5 player to tank semis at ATP level tournament...
