NEW YORK (AP) -- Top-50 player Gael Monfils of France pulled out of the U.S. Open on Thursday with a right hamstring injury.

Monfils, once ranked as high as No. 23 and currently No. 44, will be replaced in the draw by a player who lost in qualifying.

The 20-year-old Monfils, who won three junior Grand Slam titles in 2004, is considered an up-and-coming star on tour. He reached the third round at each of this year's first three majors.

Monfils should play against a qualifier. In the 2nd round Ljubo or Vliegen.

You just never know what's coming next with Monfils. Injury, injury, first round, first round, final, first round, injury, semis, first round, quarters, injury...

it's a wonder anyone can keep up.

I hope he's better soon.

I wonder if it was an injury he got while practicing since he arrived and withdrew on the same day.

Good, serves him right for always letting me down bitterly by throwing a match in a ridiculous fashion when I am going for him.

Don't get high hopes, we're talking about Ljuba Truba here.

I know,I know, but he just has to start playing well again, sooner or later.

And this draw is a great opportunity to get him back on track right before the indoor season.

Shame he's injured. He could have easily made 3R again! :)

Is the Lucky Loser drawn at random now, or is the LL spot still given to the highest ranked player to lose?

It's still given to the highest ranked player that lost..which makes me happy cause now Frank is in the MD whether he wins or not :D

Sorry Gael..

Good. Maybe this is karma for all the injury fakes he has pulled during matches down the years.
