there are two djokovics in the draw!!!! and they're playing doubles!!

what is it nowadays with serbians forming cute doubles teams?

Am I the only one that thinks this might be a bad idea? :p Sure, the doubles is cute... but Marko in an ATP singles :o I just hope he doesn't get spanked, he could end up with Donald Young Syndrome. :scared:

Scotso
07-13-2007, 12:33 AM
On the reverse, I hope he keeps at it and develops to be the great player everyone says he will be (but better than Nole? I'm not so sure...)... having an older brother that does well on the tour will certainly help him get WCs and sponsorships, etc.

I will want the Djokoboys 1, 2, and 3 :D And they need to take turns winning all the doubles titles with one another.

That was my initial reaction.

Not that I'm overly interested in Djokovics not named "Novak."

At least the WC is for qualifying, not main draw.

Am I the only one who read "fag" instead of "fatigue" in the interview there? :tape:

Not just you, it does say fag :p

.. and Lee is right. The WC is for qualies. I wouldn't be happy if he gets a WC into the main draw, it's much too soon for that. I don't think it's wise for him to have things so easy.

I agree :) I've always been pleased that Nole earned his way to the top... the last thing I would want is for Marko to be the next Donald Young. :scared:

I know, but I mean... qualifying in an ATP event is still a huge step up from a low tier juniors. I'm not saying that Marko won't win a point, but it could still be disappointing if he were to lost 0 and 0. I mean, it would be expected. I'm just worried that such a thing might hurt his confidence. He can take it two ways, that it's just experience and for fun, and that he's very young and has a lot of time to improve... or he could react very badly.

I don't mean to be negative (isn't that Jess' role? :p), just cautious. But if Marko is anything like Nole, he would never take anything very seriously. :p

I just want him to win a few games. It would be nice if he drew a shitty Croat WC :p

Scotso

I think the best news from that interview is that he's going to play doubles at the US Open with Zimonjic. That could be very fun.

So I just noticed (yes, I know, I'm slow) that this means Nole isn't playing Amersfoort. Why isn't he defending his title?

Farenhajt
07-14-2007, 10:02 PM
I guess he wants to rest properly and relies on making big points at hardcourt Masters and USO.

(And as someone said - I think it was uglyamerican? - he doesn't need another iPod for a trophy :))

Scotso

But hopefully he'll replace that one with Umag.

Yeah, it's a completely new line of shirts by Adidas and Nole is the main promoter. Allegedly the shirts grip the body in much better way (a player doesn't feel any encumberment of the motion) and they have a cooling system similar to "spine" openings on the back of Nadal's Nike shirt.

before the start of the match i wanted Pablo to get a double bagel but now i should tell you that this Spanish guy is really handsome, axtremely good-looking!of course Nole and Marko are hotter and he must have lost to Marko but the truth is that the guy is really hot!at the end Nole told him some nice words and what a surprise-hugged him so obviously he didn`t want to be as cruel(6:0 6:0) as i wanted!anyway...BRAVO NOVACE!!!

The overall loss isn't a disaster. Hell, even the top doubles teams in the world are upset every now and then. But losing the first after leading 5-1 does hurt :o

I'm sure that when they requested the wildcards somebody had made it very clear to Marko the kind of risks it would entail (ie: you're a 15 year-old junior about to take the plunge into an ATP event; the possibility of very bad losses is very, very high) and that the Djokovic team wouldn't have gone ahead with it without being sufficiently certain that Marko has the ability (or a strong enough support system) to not get down on himself after such losses and take them as positive learning experience.

It's not a bad loss at all. I expected them to lose, and it's disappointing that they were up 5-1 and won only one more game... but I think what we need to take away from this is that a 20 year old and a 15 year old were good enough to go up 5-1 in the first place. I admit that I wasn't convinced that Marko and Djole were really as good of players as the Nole camp said... I figured they were just being kind to the young brothers. But Marko's efforts here at just 15 have convinced me that he really is a big talent, so I think we have a lot to look forward to from him.

At this moment, I don't think we could definitively predict how good they would turn out to be in the long run.. Talent is one thing; anything could happen between now and the period of their maturity as pros which would determine their career achievements (re: Gasquet, Mahut). I think one of the remarks made a couple of years ago about how Marko and Djole are supposedly better than Nole has really inflated some ridiculous expectations. It's no use hyping up these boys now as the next big things of tennis until they have proven it with their own achievements.

I believe that Marko is talented, yes, but I won't put him on the GOAD (Greatest of All Djokovii) pedestal just yet :p

I guess.

It's my fault Novak lost. I overslept and missed church on Sunday. :o

It's obvious that Novak had put too much pressure on himself and then he has to play someone from his own country who knows his game inside out = disaster.

I don't know how he could say that Troicki knowing his game as a practise partner had no bearing on the match

I just don't know what to say about this. So I'm not going to say anything.

I believe that Marko is talented, yes, but I won't put him on the GOAD (Greatest of All Djokovii) pedestal just yet :p

You're kind of talking like I said he was... all I said was that he is talented. :p

That was pretty pathetic. Usually loses like this for other people I just kind of laugh and say it's typical of players I like, but I expect a bit more from Nole.

#3 in the world RG and Wimbly SF... he should have had this tournament in the bag, so I'm quite disappointed in him.

I'm more puzzled than disappointed. I mean, he returned from 1-5 to 5-5 saving a matchpoint, so it was clear he could close the match (or get to the TB at least) if he'd step up just a notch (which he did), but then...

I really can't shake off the impression some personal favors were taking place here (like, "In the long run I'm OK even if I lose, no big deal, but Viktor could benefit a lot from winning").

No no, not you   I had in mind this one remark I found in several newspaper articles, about how one of Nole's team members said that Marko is way more talented than Nole and that got some people thinking he's some kind of prodigy thing.

It used to be mentioned on Nole's Wiki page too.

thx for the article!in his post match interview Novak also appoligised to the fans and i think that he really had to do it!only if you have watched the match i can know how badly he played!it`s his worst match of the year in my opinion, his earliest lose in a tournament for the year and Viktor is the the player with the lowest ranking that have beaten him this season...i also think that this the match in which Nole`s serve has been broken the most in 2007...i don`t really think that this needs a lot of comments...there were stages during the match when he looked absolutely uninterested in what was happening on the court...the spirit of a fighter that i like the most about him was totally gone, even when he came back from 1:5 he wasn`t actually fighting the way he can...i feel so disappointed...and i 5think that this is a lot likely to cost him the 3rd place in the rankings with Rodick taking the title in Indianapolise...what did you do Nole???
the only thing that`s possitive in the loss is the fact that he`ll have enough time to prepare for Montreal...
before the beginning of the tournament i was wondering if playing a tournament on clay just before the start of the US hard season is a mistake but what made me change my mind was the fact that i was sure that Nole was going to take this title...
i don`t know if what happened to Marko and that doubles match has affected him somehow but he looked totally exhausted mentally and spiritually...

i_like_tennis has a thread in GM with match reports from Umag. Here's what he said about Nole/Marko's doubles match and Nole's first round victory, in case anyone's interested:

Montcourt/Vasselin - Djokovic/Djokovic 75 61

I watched 4 games of this match. All the games were won by Djokovic/Djokovic until then.It was obviously a big pressure for the younger brother, playing doubles with someone ranked #3 in the world. You could see that, he missed a smash one time, and then Novak Djokovic was running backwards to get it - he did, but all the people laughed.I thought Djokovic/Djokovic will win something like 61 61, and next day I came to the center, and I see Djokovic/Djokovic - Montcourt/Vasselin 57 16.I thought it was something to do with the younger Djokovic not being used to playing matches on the ATP tour and 40 lead was probably just too much to handle for him But he played good, so no worries

Djokovic-Andujar 61 63

Well, Djokovic played a good match against Andujar. You could really see who's the first seed and who isn't.Andujar didn't really do anything extra impressive, losing first 9 points in the match.People started shouting "Make a double and give him a point Nole" and things like that. But all the people cheered for Djokovic, really, he was the most popular in Umag.It was just a routine win, some good points from Andujar too, but Djokovic was too good.Still don't know how could he lose 2nd round.

Nole doesn't really seem like the type to give away any match... I hope that isn't the case. I don't like it when people don't give 100% effort.
