yes that`s the news on the ticker, too

Murray has taken a wildcard into New Haven. Scheduled to return to competition at Washington after being off the tour with a wrist injury since May, Murray pulled out of the event but is still scheduled to compete in Montreal next week.

Isner, from Georgia, is the NCAA runner-up who made a surprise run as a wild card and lost to Andy Roddick in the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington Sunday. Young won the Wimbledon junior championship this year.

http://www.courant.com/sports/hc-pilotpen0816.artaug16,0,73.storyThere are three wild cards remaining and Worcester said competition for the slots is intense. Four top-50 players have requested wild cards: David Ferrer (15), Juan Monaco (25), Dmitry Tursunov (26) and Mario Ancic (38).

Other candidates are Americans Mardy Fish (51) and Sam Querrey (65), and junior phenom Donald Young, who won the junior title at Wimbledon and was awarded a U.S. Open wild card Wednesday. Worcester said she will continue to shoot high, checking in with No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Novak Djokovic.

"It's a very interesting wild card situation," Worcester said.

You would think that Canas and Gasquet would request wildcards as both did miserably in Montreal and Cincinnati.

But maybe Nadal will receive a wildcard since he had an injury that forced him to retire from Cincinnati and he may be after some more matches plus he would be a major drawcard for the tournament.

Ivo#1Fan
08-17-2007, 01:43 PM
If Nadal has injury he will rest for US Open so he can be healthy. It would be foolish to play the week before a major.

Total shame to waste wildcards on Fish and Young if there are quality players like Ferrer, Ancic, and Querrey who want to play.

no WC for Big Sam??...or will he withdraw?

Go back one page in the thread.

Gasquet doesn't need matches, he needs to set the racquet down for a few days and let his hand heal completely. I got a close look at that thing and I can't see how he even held a racquet for a set and a half.

This tournament has brought up the issue on wildcards. Wildcards shouldn't be given to big name players. Wildcards are for those who need it and have a desire to blossom on the world stage.
