Hamburg: Wouldn't it be nice if the champion actually won Roland Garros?

This is the clay Masters with the least success in making its champion the winner of the French Open.

Defending Champion: Guillermo Coria (French Open quarterfinalist)

Last Champ to win Roland Garros: Guga, in 2000. Before him, Ivan Lendl, 1987  I hope we don't have to wait another 13 years.

3-time Hamburg Champs (Open Era):
Andre Mevedev UKR , '94, '95, '97
Eddie Dibbs USA, '73 '74, '76
Neither ever won the French Open

2-time Hamburg Champs (Open Era)
Ivan Lendl, USA '87, '89
Jose Higuera, ESP '79, '82
Manual Orantes, ESP '72, '75

The most successful country (Open Era): Spain, 9 wins

Last Spaniard to win Hamburg: Albert Portas, 2001

Guille made it to the SF last year at Roland Garros :)

If Guille's healthy, there's no reason for him not to defend his title; his draw favourable. Will be interesting to see what happens.

It´s not true that Lendl was the last Hamburg champ to win Roland Garros. Gustavo Kuerten won Hamburg and RG in 2000.

Hamburg has the slowest clay courts in ATP tour, RG has the fastest so i don't think Hamburg champion will be RG champion

Mea culpa, I'll make the correction. Still a long time between champs, tho.

Interesting theory. Someone posted earlier that Hamburg was the last of the clay Masters, and by then the players were all tired. Thus the champ would have played too much to win RG.

RG is the fastest? I thought Rome was... and I thought MC was the closest to RG speed? or am I just making it all up? lol

Rome is the closest to RG (although last year the courts in Paris had definitely been slowed down a lot and more topsoil had been added, some of the rallies on Chatrier were interminable).
