Let's see if this turns out to really be true

Roddick: It's a Challenge (r)
PARIS -- There is a very strong chance that Andy Roddick, hungry for matches before Wimbledon, will play doubles only at the Challenger tournament in Surbiton, England, which begins Monday.
Roddick would play with Robby Ginepri, with whom he has twice paired for a 2-2 record. The last time they played together was in Rome in 2006, where they won a round.
It would be Roddick's first match in a Challenger, which is the minor leagues of pro tennis, since April of 2001, when he played singles and doubles (Paul Goldstein) on clay in Bermuda. He lost second round in boh singles and doubles there.
It's unusual for a top 10 to play a Challenger, but Roddick, whose clay season was shortened by injury, needs matches before Wimbledon and he got in only one match at the French, where he and eight other U.S. men went out in the first round.
Though it's only doubles, it will give him a jump start on the grass court season and a chance to do some serve-and-volleying.
Surbiton is just south of London. The following week Roddick would be in London for the Queen's tournament, where he has had great success. Roddick also played doubles two weeks ago, with Amer Delic, at Poertschach, Austria, where they won two rounds before giving a walkover in the semis.

Doug Spreen Update

Posted By Andyroddick.com Staff On 3rd June 2007 @ 10:12 In Front Page Stories | Comments Disabled

It is now time to get to that green stuff. We have spent the last few days here in Paris practicing on a hard court as Andy gets ready to make the change to Grass court tennis. Andy has been working hard on his game the last few days. We are heading to London this weekend with practice on the grass courts next week. I know we all look forward and Andy especially to that first practice on grass. It really is the start of a fun month. Practice next week and then the following week the tournament at Queens Club. That tournament is a really, really nice tournament. Awesome grass courts and alot of people at the tournament everyday. Andy has some really good support from the fans there and they make it a fun week. We really do look forward to Queens each year. London is a great city and we all really enjoy a chance to go back there and have fun. Off to the grass and that means Wimbledon is just a few short weeks away!!!

Playing under real match conditions and working on his volleying under pressure for the grass I suppose. I'll be very disappointed if Andy doesn't net-rush an awful lot on the grass. And he needs to practice it a lot. But like, he could just play doubles at Queens, like he has before.

Whatever, he's there. That's all that matters

So now the real question is if he's going to try and replace a twin or just get rid of them all together.

I had forgotten about the Quallie fiasco last year. Did Andy pull out of that angry because the TD announced his involvement and tried to market Andy before anything was finalized? Someone refresh my memory on that, please.

Still impressive that somebody of Andy's caliber would consider playing these tournaments. I hope it's true and not just Bricker starting unfounded rumors again.

Someone refresh my memory on that, please. :scratch:Something like that - Andy found out he would have to play 2 matches in one day and he had been waiting to find that out but it leaked thanks to Bricker and the rest is history. But at least he was actually thinking about it - Bricker just got it flat out wrong when he had allegedly spoken to Ken and there was like "no way" Andy would be working with Jimmy and he was ABSOLUTELY sure.... and well, yeah.

ok like, there was an article from the London Times where at the beginning it said Andy went to London today, did mention the Surbiton (but said it much more of a "maybe" type thing than Bricker) and also said that it was Jimmy who got Andy to stay over. I went to copy it, and the article had literally changed out of thin air to be something about Maria and I can't find it again

Here, I pieced part together from google :silly: because it still shows up in the search results:cuckoo:

Andy Roddick was a fidgety passenger on the Eurostar yesterday, heading to a prospective place in the doubles draw at the LTA Surbiton Trophy that should add a few hundred to the attendance figures. Imagine turning a corner at Berrylands and bumping into Jimmy Connors. It was at the instigation of his coaching consultant that Roddick headed for London rather than go home to Austin, Texas, to play in his first Challenger, which is the minor leagues of pro tennis, since April of 2001, when he played singles and doubles (Paul Goldstein) on clay in Bermuda....

The only thing that worries me a little is the whole thing with what Darren Cahill said and even though Andy was IN Austria, he didn't look like he really had his heart in it and that he really cared. I'm hoping that either Cahill was wrong, or that at least it can be chalked up to clay. Sure, even if it was Jimmy's doing and as a result of Jimmy's prodding, Andy is a big boy and decided to stay, but I just hope he's not doing it just because Jimmy says so - he has to believe in it too.

He really has GOT to do well on the grass, just 2 years ago he was the clear-cut 2nd best player on grass, he has to re-establish that. I know the grass is a lot slower than it used to be but still. He's gotta really give it 100% and go all out and be emotional and into it and stuff.

I'll just be really pissed if he keeps with this pussy play on grass. It's time to step up the forehand and the return and omve into the court (not just to volley, but just to rally too.)

I'm sick of this :armed:

It sucks but I don't think he cares about clay. I know he cares when he loses on it, but I think it's just the actual fact that he lost, and then he get validates the loss by saying it was on clay.

I have high expectations for grass. He's been a solid semi final player on the hard courts. Now I just want him to get to the Queens final and the Wimbledon one. He needs a good draw there though he needs to be far far away from Roger.

I think I may have set my hopes too high once again! *sigh*

A good draw would help.

Thank god for Wimbledon's preferential seeding because Andy will be down to #5 after RG. That would've put him potentially in the QF against Roger. But he should be seeded 3 anyway.

I don't really care what his draw is. As far as I am concerned Andy should beat everyone except Roger on grass so if he does get a tough draw it will be good preparation for the final! ;)

I'm kind of scaring myself now! :o

Not a great start to the grass season, Andy and Robby lost their doubles match in Surbiton 6-4, 6-1

Yes. I was worried about that then I remembered how Wimbledon does things.

Now I just have to worry about everything else that has to do with the draw.

 sorry it's funny that they lost doubles. Let's hope it's not an omen to the rest of the grass season.

I don't care about their loss...it's sooo good to see Andy on grass again :bounce:

How many years' grass results do they use at the Wimbledon seeding?2-3-5?I don't remember.
If the gap between Andy and Nadal would be smaller he could easily get the No2 position...

LOL. I don't care if they lost in the first round of a Challenger, it looked like they had fun, they needed to get practicing on grass, and I hope Andy plays doubles again at Queens this year. :)

Wow, it looks like they giggled their way through that loss. Sabotage because Andy didn't really want to do it? I don't care as long as this isn't a trend...

Robby needs a good visit to the barber.

I'm not sure if I'm amused by them losing or really scared :help:

I'm actually very disappointed they lost in the first round. I know neither players are doubles specialists but c'mon it's grass and Andy should be doing better on this surface regardless. 6/1 what sort of scoreline is this? :(

Whatever, they clearly didn't care. The pics are quite cute though.

I think playing the whole thing was in general a little silly. The fact that he stayed overseas and went to London 3 weeks before Wimbledon is what is important, IMO.

It's not funny. Roger will probably play the final at RG, will go to Halle and win over there and will probably also win Wimbledon. He has a full schedule but will do well in all tournaments. Andy has all the time he needs to prepare for Wimbledon while Roger and Rafa are still busy trying to win a Slam and Andy loses 6/1 in a challenger match on grass, 1R? It's not funny at all. It's a joke and hope it's not a trend like some of you already said.

it's doubles in a challenger. If he had gone out there and lost in singles to either of those guys, then i'd be REALLY concerned. They may have very well gone out there and lost on purpose, just wanted to get their "Grass feet" and now they want to practice with people who are actually good.

I don't know about you but I feel a lot better about Andy being in London at Queens practicing hard with people like Hewitt or Fish or whoever, rather than playing in Surbiton against nobodies in doubles.

If he shows up at Queens and fucks that up - then I will be mad and concerned.

Well the 6/1 scoreline is a bit of a joke. Both Andy and Robbi serve well and why on earth were they broken so many times! I can only think that their volleys were crap. Anyhow I hope Robbi was the weakest link.

I can't take this seriously to be honest. Win or lose, it really won't matter all that much because A) It's doubles and Andy probably won't play doubles at Wimbledon and B) He would still have to play against the big boys, guys who are a lot better than the players at this tournament. This match probably won't have any real effect in the long run IMO.

Of course this challenger game will not have any effect on Andy's tennis career but that's not the point. He entered this tournament to practice his shitty volleys and returns. It looks like they are still shitty considering the amount of time they were broken. It's safe to conclude they didn't return well either.

Beyond the fact that Andy lost in the 1r of doubles at a challenger event and the rah rah of him sucking, etc. honestly I REALLY think that any and every other team in the draw NEEDS the money, a heck of a lot more than multimillionaires Roddick and Ginepri :tape:.

This random act from the yanks was simply to play an actual match on grass (differs from practice) regardless of their effort on the court.
