Sampras: "Federer can break all my records"

ATHENS, May 16 (Reuters) - Former world number one Pete Sampras believes Roger Federer can break all of his records, including the 14 grand slam titles he lifted in his glittering 15-year career.

Sampras, in Athens to play in an over-30s tournament series organised by fellow American Jim Courier, said current rankings leader Federer could also win more than his seven Wimbledon crowns.

"He is the best player in the world. He is going to go on and break all my records," Sampras told reporters. "He can win 16 grand slams."

Sampras, who retired after his 2002 U.S. Open victory, won a record 14 grand slams including seven Wimbledon crowns, three more than Federer's current haul. Sampras' Wimbledon record ties Willie Renshaw's, a player in the 1880s.

"Federer is phenomenal on the surface (grass)," Sampras said. "I think he can win seven or eight depending on how much he wants to go on."

Sampras said Federer's mental and physical strength would put him in a league of his own for the next few years, despite his split with coach Tony Roche last week.

"He is the strongest for now and will be for the next couple of years," Sampras said.

Federer played his childhood idol only once in a competitive tournament in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2001.

Federer won the match 7-5 in the fifth set, ending Sampras' 31-match winning streak at the All England Club.

Maybe you are right, Sampras has chosen a bad time to say these things.

I wish Sampras would stay away from tennis,~ i was happy to not hear about him for a few years after his retirment!!!

He should keep playing golf & pretending to be a celebrity in Hollywood-->> let the current stars take centre stage without hogging the limelight!!

Nothing like a bit of reverse psychology to add to the pressure Federer's under right now :)

Exactly;)

If Sampras were sincere then I wouldn`t mind, ~but even 5-years into retirement he`s still playing mind games [very sad Pistol Pete]
...
In his recent ESPN interview~ Pete kept referring to himself in the 3rd person & saying boring crap such as "...one of the greatest players ever":o
--->>
Sampras obviously still has an inferiority complex [b4 it was with Agassi (since Andre got more fans/media) & now it`s with Federer-> because everyone`s saying he`s the most talented ever]:p

It´s not an older interview. It´s from today (or maybe yesterday).

I think i know... Federer's losing on purpose lately to get ready for his exhibition match between himself and Sampras!!! Sampras must have told him: "you want an exhibition match with me bitch? then lose a few games to n00bz0r5" Federer: "Alright i'll do it daddy!!! I'll let myself get Pwnz0red for a few games and fire my coach"

Am I the only one who thinks that Federers new coach ought to be: Sampras?

Sampras could still teach Federer a thing or two about mental focus. This is key in Fed's matches with Nadal. He might also be able to improve on Feds serve.

Sampras has said that for a while now. I believe what he says is fairly accurate and the general consensus.

Why do you have to be so offensive? Iīm only saying that Pete has chosen a weird moment to give credit to Roger and thatīs true. Federer "has gone four straight tournaments without a title -- his worst stretch since becoming the top-ranked player in February 2004".
He could have chosen a better moment to say these things, after an hypothetical 5th Wimbledon title, maybe.
I have lots of respects for Sampras as a tennis player, but I donīt think heīs comfortable with the idea of being surpassed.

We are all humans my friend, would you feel comfortable been surpassed, no one would, and I am not been offensvie:rolleyes:  Pete has been saying this a long time not just today, so you are late, and why do you think Pete has anything to do with Roger losing 4 straight, because he said Roger will broke his record?:( :(

i think some people are really too picky, someone asked pete questions about roger and he just had to answer, what is this not right timing? do you want him to say "Oh, roger is in a slump right now, he will not win any more slams? , i am sure that if pete said that, some posters will again tell him to shut up , what do you want from him, replied rudely to the journalists that "i don't want to give any answer"??, why don't you blame the journalist who posed this roger question?

Sampras has always been behind Federer over Nadal. He's said that Federer is a better player on every surface but clay, and that if they played 10 matches on hardcourt, Federer would win 7 or 8 times out of 10.

I don't think he wants to accept that a playstyle other than his can be more dominant.
