well this match was played outside USA on clay (not on a fast hard court in USA) .

that explains the result.

Great first set from Chela - best I've seen him play in a long time. Roddick never had a chance.

I'm surprised so many people can't stand Roddick.
I'm one of them, by the way, but I thought I was in the minority.

I dispise his attitude first off (the ego, rudeness to opponents) but secondly I hate that he has such success with only one real weapon.
It's not his fault, but it is not fair that a player with limited ability such as his, can gain such wealth, ego, attitude just because he's an expert server.

Chela, I could kiss you right now.

that explains the result.I thought the courts in Rome were playing quite fast. Of course it's not the same as hard court, but still a pathetic display from Roddick. :o Props to Chela though for playing very well. :yeah:

First victory for Chela against Roddick after a drought of five years. Clearly, Roddick overread his ability on clay after his victory against Gaston.

The only department Chela can lay claim superiority in is counterpunching.
Roddick was one good return game away from making this competitive.

ahh well, at least there's the Gaudio win, even if it means little these days ;)

question: is Chela considered a "clay court specialist"?

Just thought it was interesting that Reuters immediately pinned that label on him in the summary article http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=2866016

 :smash:

No, he isnt a claycourt specialist.
Yes, it is his best surface - but he plays well on hardcourts too. Results like AO, Miami 4th round, QF of Indian Wells, SF or F of many smaller tournaments (Adelaide, Auckland, Los Angeles) are showing that he isnt just a clay specialist.

Hm, what about this: is Nadal a claycourt specialist?

Very well played by Chela. He's clearly high on confidence and it's working wonders for his game. He's got a good rhythm, he can rally or be aggressive and he just makes very few UEs.

Even by his clay standards, it was a shit performance from Andy. The serve was just not firing on all cylinders today, in fact I think I only remember one ace all match. Tactically, he needed to step it up and try to hit with more power and less patience than with Gaudio because a player like Chela loves his rhythm. But, there wasn't much he could do against an opponent in this form.

I still fancy Roddick to have a good run in Hamburg and RG this year, if he can stay injury free.

:retard: As far as I know, Andy signed the petition to save the Monte Carlo tournament. Please get your facts straight.Blake, Roddick take issue with Federer and Nadal over ATP tour reforms

The Associated Press
Sunday, May 6, 2007

ROME: James Blake and Andy Roddick have taken exception to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's defense of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Last month, Federer and Nadal held a press conference in Monte Carlo to declare that the ATP is moving too fast with its plan to restructure the 2009 calendar.

The ATP wants to trim the Masters schedule from nine to eight tournaments by cutting Monte Carlo and Hamburg and adding Shanghai.

"I agree the tour does need to listen to it's players but I think we need to do that behind closed doors instead of just airing it out in front of everyone," Blake said Sunday on the eve of the Rome Masters.

Both Monte Carlo and Hamburg, which like Rome are two of the main clay-court warmup events for the French Open, would remain on the tour but no longer with Masters status. They are both suing the ATP.

"If it gets to a desperation point then maybe we have to use the media and get your point out that way," Blake said. "But I really don't think we're at that desperation point yet, especially since we're dealing with the 2009 calendar."

The Masters Series events are the most important tennis tournaments on the men's tour outside the four Grand Slams.

Federer, Nadal, Nikolay Davydenko and Tommy Robredo are among the players who have signed a petition opposing the ATP reform proposal

Neither Blake nor Roddick played at Monte Carlo this year.

"What no one is talking about is the finances of it," Roddick said. "This is not a knock on (Monte Carlo). The tournament is amazing, they run it great, the players love it. It's the most beautiful stadium we have.

"But if you get 70,000 people a week in Monte Carlo and then if you have a place like Cincinnati, it may be a little further out and a lot of Europeans don't like going there, but if the attendance is 180,000 and you're looking at it as a business model and who brings in the most revenue, when it's time to make cuts, that person is going to get cut."

"When no changes are made in tennis everybody screams, then when changes start being made everybody screams," Roddick said. "Each one of us is going to have opinions mostly because of how it affects us on a selfish level. For us to be able to look at it objectively, I don't know if that's possible.

This performance pretty much shows how poor Gaudio is at the moment, nevertheless, Chela played a simple and intelligent match, made sure he took care of his own serve and got the returns deep and once he they got into the rallies, then Chubby Chela wasn't threatened.

No shit, Roddick wasn't at his best, but can only play as well the opponent lets you and I wonder if Roddick asked Chela at the handshake "Do you take American Express for tennis lessons on clay".

Chela on the right. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/svein_sveynsson/buttkick.gif
