World Group Semifinal: U.S.A. at Sweden (September 21-23, 2007)

Aphex
05-10-2007, 10:26 AM
The venue will be Scandinavium, Göteborg, where the US lost the famous(at least in Sweden) 1984 final, the 1994 SF and the 1997 final. Actually that's all of Sweden's wins against the Americans.:D

The surface will be the same as against Belarus and Argentina, fast indoor carpet.

Don't worry about coming to Sweden. We have beef jerky in our stores now, so you will feel at home.;)

who's going to play this Tie for Sweden??

I think: Robin Soderling with Thomas Johansson for singles... leaving Bjorkman/Aspelin for doubles
I wish that Joachim Johansson could play that match.. what a scary player to face with, specially on fast acrylic courts

Swden will regret not playing on clay. All americans lost in first round. Also sweden beat U.S. on clay in world cup team.

Thing is: take Soderling out and the Swedes have no decent second player on clay. The fast carpet is still probably the best surface for them.

Believe me I think anyone can defeat the U.S. on clay. If I had to pick a surface against the U.S., I would go with clay everytime. May be if they had to play on it more they could learn to win some Matches  That being said go U.S.A. :yippee:

From the rambling of JMac today, the USA team will likely be Roddick and Blake plus the Bryans. And Sam Querrey will be the 5th player.

Querrey? Isner has acaully won bigger matches this summer. plus his serve on the surface in sweeden is better.

We'll see about pim pim though, he hasnt played since jan.

Sweden nominated their team this morning and pim-pim is in there...

Pim-pim Johansson
Thomas Johansson
Jonas Björkman
Simon Aspelin

Apparently Söderlings injury makes his situation too risky. They are still considering him and have until the draw (next thursday) to make changes

If Söderling doesn't play, then it's game, set and match USA.

That is right, but not to change at all. Björkman and ToJo have no chance to win any singles vs Blake or Roddick. And Aspelin/Björkman will lose easily to Bryan/Bryan.
And Pimpim will not play on 1st day for sure. He is not really ready for it.

Lets see if one Swede can win on Friday. They beat the USA 1997 at the same place. I hope Aspelin has a lot of confidence after his GS win.

Anyone have a live stream?
A tie break set in less than 35 mins! Anyone watching can you tell me if they serving and volleying? It would be dumb not to on such a fast surface.

Roddick 26 winners vs 2 unforced errors! Over 12 games + tiebreak. Wowsers.

Pim Pim did well to force this TB, but you'd think 'no way' could the match-poor Swede keep it up for the 3 or more sets it would take him to cop this tie.

According to the stats, only 1 point has been played at the net....and Roddick won it.

I've always found Roddick to be quite a neat player - never a lot of UEs in general. Looking at the Russia v Germany match now :tape: - 87 UEs between Tankydenko and Kohlschrieber, with only 28 winners combined. :tape:

But not enough winners and sometimes opponent hitting loads of winners past him (with load of UEs too)
Great serving though: 77% first serve, 100% of serves won and 16 aces.
