Q. I'm sorry if you already answered this. Is the French Open your absolute No. 1 priority this year?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, right now it is. I mean, can you put it over Wimbledon? I guess never. But the French Open is before Wimbledon, thank God, so I can really focus on the French Open.
Yeah. I don't know if that answers your question because I don't know myself I guess.

Er...what's all the fuss about?? He did some thinking out loud and then decided he didn't know. That's certainly not disrespecting The French, especially as in the past he's always been very definite about Wimbledon being THE one.

Of course Wimbledon is THE one for him. He wouldn´t change his first Wimbledon title for his first French title. But I´m sure he would change his hypothetical fifth Wimbledon title for completing the "Roger Slam".

You might be right.

Why has the thread title changed....and not very subtly???

Though I'll never agree, many consider Wimbledon to be "the slam of slams". I believe Pete viewed it this way as well. Hey, some people like chocolate, some like vanilla. Rafa likes chocolate (clay) and Roger likes vanilla (white attire)...no problem with the quote.

It's not like this isn't something Federer has ALWAYS thought, too. He says it every year. People ask his goals, and he says "Stay #1 and win Wimbledon." and then everyone in the room awkwardly waits for him to mention SOMETHING about the French Open, and he just sits there waiting for the next question, until they ask him about walking into a spa naked.

RagingLamb

with an answer like that, it shows he's trying to accept that he can't win it. so he talks about it like it's not that important.

I haven't heard anyone important disrespect a major like that since Andre, when he said he doesn't care about the grass.

Eh I'm not sure about this. It would stop his streak. But it would also mean he would be the only one to actually win the season slam since now its played on 4 difference surfaces.

Please dont say I realli think about winning FO after Hamburg...cuz you obviously dont.
If you dont care about it...just say I hope it's over soon so I can get back to Wimbledon and win everything (and he probably wont).

It has to be said that equally Borg's record of 5 consecutive slams would also be a very big thing. His comments aren't THAT unreasonable, even though I too believe that completing the "Roger slam" would be a far greater accomplishment than winning 5 Wimbledons in a row. Especially considering that he would probably have to beat the greatest claycourter of all time to win RG and that he has very little competition on grass, where he is in a class of his own.

Geez Roger is doing what he must do , sayign that FO is priority would be foolish , but he knows that he wants it badly more than Wimby right now, winning Wimby won't make him immortal history he would be another great who wasn't abvle to win both so that great. Winning French completly changes his postion make him GOAT no matter how many Slams he wins in future , and gives him chance to complete whole Grand Slam which would be great. And Roger knows it and we know it.

If Federer ever wins the French Open, and he will one day; the same people who boo RG will crowd together and say he won a 'prestigious tournament'. I can't see why RG is not appreciated for its tradition as Wimbly is. Both are so unique in their own ways and so different.

It has been said again and again in every MTF thread that reporters and interviewers try hardly to make poor players say the most bizarre stupidities. Thereafter they wash their hands and pose as humble messengers of history and truth. To believe anything written or said in an interview I would have to read or listen to it in the presencial company of its victim . . . . . .:o :o :o
