I'm not surprised at all by this in spite of people queuing up to say Monfils would win - he hasn't looked in winning form or mentality for ages so it was unlikely the pressure of defending SF points was going to help.

James should have won this match. He's in the top 10, and you know Gael is dealing with some growing pains.

Why wont Monfils get a real coach. I hope the guy isn't that stiff-headed to think he can do the turn-around himself. He's NO Federer. WOW

Can someone give me info about the match? Did JB actually play smart clay court tennis or did he go for it, get lucky and let Monfils make mistakes. I am not able to follow a scoreboard here. Thanks
Glad JB got through this match though :yeah:

From what I saw it was a typical Monfils match - he just kept swinging wildly. Sometimes they landed in and were spectacular. Far more often, they were long over the baseline by quite some way. Blake was the steadier and just took care of his own business and coped with the occasional Monfils firework well.

I can understand why Blake is the favorite because he's a better all around player but Monfils is better on clay as evidence that Monfils beat Blake last year at the French Open. Look for Monfils to go deep in Rome to give himself some energy heading into the French.

:retard: :retard: :retard:

I got Monfils winning this.

As expected, another joke by the fluke called Xristos.

Wrong. The only way Chuck beats Blake on clay is in a fifth set.

:yeah:

James didn't upset anybody except for the Americans-suck-on-clay haters. :p

That's because it was MONFILS at the other side of the net.

Thats a more accurate reflection on his talent. :)

hmmm. There is no debating whether he has the talent. If you cant see he has potential then you must be blind. The guy has (the ability) to hit big from every part of the court and he also moves well.

In spite of all the antics...I really like Monfils for some reason. I feel bad for him that he's having this slump/problems. I hope he can start playing better again. Some of his gets today were incredible.

That is one of the problems for him. He has become too addicted to his defensive abilities.

Anyway, well done "clayclown" James!

The best of Gael Monfils is his stamina and athletic power. That being said, I like the guy cause he's nice (I think) and he seems a good guy. But I don't think he has a great talent.

I feel very sorry for players like monfils who have no potentiel to be a top ten player. With murray and gasquet, we can question it but not for monfils :(

He has a "real coach" (Olivier Delaître).

My point exactly for asking the question about him getting a real coach. Monfils hasn't improved 1 ounce. Either he's hard-headed or this "coach" can't reach him.

Hey All,

Some of yous tickle me. Now - does someone have to lose and someone have to win in this tennis match thingy? Well - if so - then the best player on the day won. Some of you would have been just as hard on James if he had lost. I really don't get it. Gael improved over the last ATP match he played. He had three set points but couldn't convert. Could it be because James played those important points better - or did Gael make errors? It has to be one of the two. This is why pro tennis matches are played. One player has to beat the other.

But for anyone to write off a young man like Gael for not beating a player that was as high as #4 last year and played Fed in the MC - is a little shortsighted. Plus - he beat James at the FO.

Again - he is trying to improve. He was able to complete the match. He didn't retire. He has game - but just like all of the other young guns - it just has to come together for him when it is meant to be. He has time. What is he - twenty? I mean really. And it's not like top players are always able to close out a set if given the chance at times.

One player had to win and one had to lose. Both of them have room to improve as long as they're in the league and just like all of the others.

Or....HUGE EPIPHANY....he's a late bloomer! ;) :p

So he's not developing as quickly as some of the others.
Oh well. No one can deny this kid has talent. He may
simply require more time to really reach and even
begin to tap into his obvious potential.

Gotta love this "instant" society we are in. :)

My point exactly for asking the question about him getting a real coach. Monfils hasn't improved 1 ounce. Either he's hard-headed or this "coach" can't reach him.So you suggest Monfils sacks his new coach? ^^

You can't expect from Delaître that he sorts out Monfils' game and mind in one month. It's obvious it is going to take time.

And don't get me wrong, I was just using the "..." to quote you, Delaître is a real coach. He was in charge of the youngsters at the French Federation, that's how they know each other, I have no reason to think the guy doesn't know his job.
Monfils wanted so much to work again with him, for a while now, he seemed so happy when they finally found a way to work together, I'm pretty sure he's listening to him. He's trying, but it's not so easy for him, Kip and gogogirl are spot on, people here (and the journalists) are WAY too impatient.
