Anyway it shows that Gasquet can play better than the yougsters suppose to be better than him. He just has to be stronger mentally especially when facing a guy like djokovic.

it also shows how why i dont like djokovich

it showed how little he thinks of tennis. screw the fans and only play for two sets.

doesnt say much for the jokers talent either. doesnt think he can play three sets? good luck at a slam.

JBDV....you summed it up PERFECTLY. Gasquet, to put it bluntly, is a mental midget. He could have easily won the set in straight sets...and yet, found some way to hit some of the WORST shots I have ever seen on set point. Particularly the "attempt" at a drop shot that was inches wide.

Gasquet was "no mas" against Novak...

I have to agree. The standard of tennis was very poor, especially in the first set. Neither was playing that well, but Gasquet had soooo many chances and Djokovic made even more errors.

As a side note:
I'm pretty certain Djokovic wears contact lenses, as I've seen him wear spectacles in some of his press conferences. He was CONSTANTLY fiddling and being distracted with his eyes and putting in eye drops all throughout the 1st set. Estoril's pretty windy and the dust can swirl about, so maybe that had something to do with how poorly Djokovic played early on.

Bad loss for Gasquet. That first set should've been his but then Djoko clearly wasn't playing at 100% in the second so a first set win wouldn't have garunteed victory. At any rate, set points are points as well and if you don't put them away then it's your own fault. Still a good run for Gasquet who may well be in the top 10 by the time Wimbledon comes around.

Another terrific result for Nole - his consistency has shot through the roof since the start of the year, he is here to play every single week now - the only blip was losing to the very good Ferrer in Monte-Carlo.

IIRC I read somewhere that there were already problems with the signal a few days ago. I think someone who uses the betfair stream mentioned it.

Anyways, I was surprised that Richard at least won the 2nd set after blowing those 6 sps in the first set...

Nole is smart kid, he knew that he don't have strenght to win in 2...

Another title, another won, 31 this year, 2720 ATP entry points, 327 ATP race points(Nadal 365, Fed 346)...

You may not love him but you must RESPECT HIM!

Difficult to respect someone who continually relies on questionable gamesmanship to win. How can you respect someone who goes into the tank cuz it might require a little effort to win a set once he's down. Yes Gasquet did a major choke but rather see that than silly games - actually that shows Nole doesn't really have the confidence in his game and has to resort yet AGAIN to some sort of questionable tactic.

And I still don't understand why he tanked a whole set -seems to me if he didn't have enough energy for 2 sets how in the world would he for 3. And knowing Gasquet's potential to choke, down just a break is no big deal.

 If I was in that match, I'm surely prefer to watch 3 sets more than 2 sets. I like them both. Tennis is the game with physical, mental and BRAIN. so this is a game. I like smart players more than players who just can run all 3 hours without being tired....

you could also ask: why did Gasquet thank Djokovic the first set?

I'm tired of all those guys who seem to think that Gasquet has a better game than most of his opponents but just loses to them because he's mentally not as there as he needs to be.

These people don't seem to understand that at this level, the mental side of it IS the game - it's what separates the greats from the merely very goods. Gasquet may have the technically prettier groundstrokes and fluid movements but tennis is not scored like ice-skating - there are no marks for artistic impression. The best games are the ones that get the job done, no matter how ugly they may look - and the mental fortitude to fight for all the crucial points and never surrender is a very big part of that.

I saw Richard get to set point twice and on one he dumped a very easy volley into the net because he completely failed to get into the right position, and on another he totally mistimes a high volley and it sailed past him. These problems afflict his game and they are mental - he does not stay in the moment and play the ball at the crucial times. Djokovic usually does - and this, to me, is why is game is better than Gasquet's. Not prettier perhaps, but better.

"It's all mental" is the most overused topos in tennis.

Not to mention that Gasquet's game isn't really all that: lack of stamina, tactically too defensive, unaggressive ROS... I just don't think he's worth much more than his current ranking. And he's certainly not the future world beater he's (still) made out to be.

I'm still feeling good for Gasquet's remaining clay season hopefully he gets his stride by RG:crossfingers:.

And congrats to Nole the player who possess the two things most admirable in MTF - Arrogance and gamesmansip.

Maybe because there's a lot of truth to it?

That's the thing about clichés - they become clichés because they have a grain of truth at the heart.

Gasquet should have won this. Once again, he faltered in crucial moment. I don't think he's such a mental midget, he has won 4 tournaments, been in a final of 2 MS, he knows how to win. But he's lacking confidence in himself at the moment.

"It's all mental" is mostly used by fans as an excuse. You rarely see fans admitting to the insufficiencies of their fave's game. Fans tend to look at their favourites as being potential world beaters "when they get their head sorted out". Gets old. And in the WTA this kind of excuse making is used even more often.

I'm not saying Gasquet's problems are purely mental - he does have some technical issues to deal with - stragetically mainly. But I personally believe his mentality is what is holding him back the most.

It´s been the same thing for ages. I remember those funny years when this board was full of posts stating that Nadal was not better than Gasquet, it was just a matter of Richard´s complex game not being fully developed yet. Sadly, after all this time, specially after this final, I´m really starting to believe Gasquet´s game has nothing outstanding but his backhand

Question for people who are saying that this was horrible match: did you ever try to play tennis in conditions where you cannot serve because wind is too strong, and you cannot return ball as you want because it has some weird trajectories?

And guys who are making jokes about Djokovic health :o
His breathing problems are nothing new, he has some kind of astma from his childhood. Maybe you didnt notice, but he has that sort of problem usually on clay because dirt is making things even worse.
If you think that this is some kind of strategy to annoy other players, think again! Last year he played Umag finals (clay) against Wawrinka, and he had to surrender match when he was in winning situation - because he couldnt breathe at all.

him having that problem once or twice doesn't imply he has always had it, besides he faked an injury back and airness,

if you watched the match and were impartial then you should notice his gamesmanship

Nole didn't play well, yet he won. I was thinking after the AO that Djokovic would turn out to be the better player on clay, but Richard should really have won this match, the fact that he did not says a lot.

At 20, it's hardly the end of his career. I know people who were thinking that Verdasco was destined to greatness. That were the really funny years.

i agree with the posters who say gasquet is not that bad mentally, that label is because he does not perform according to his hype ,many people are expecting him to win slams ,ams and fighting for the very highest places in the ranking. but he still enought and could improve a lot in the future

Overall, he's not as mentally weak as some of his compatriots, but once in a while he proves that he's French. MC vs Verdasco and this match are just two examples. In fact, the first match of his that I watched was a Bercy 1st round match against Gaudio in 03. He wasted 6 MPs in the second set TB and went on to lose 6-1 6-7 4-6. :silly:

Sorry, but I´ve never said Verdasco was destined a greatness unlike many people here with Gasquet.

I´ve defended (and I´m still convinced) he has the tools to be one of the best players in the world but from the very first moment (juniors time) I knew his brain and attitude were the bigger hurdles he had to jump over to break through. And I´ve simply lost all my hopes on him long time ago as I´ve said here many times, no need for me to be stubborn as you who still think Gasquet will win 8 Slams and things like that ;)

PD: A clear example of this is his last matches against Murray and Gasquet. He proved he could blow them any time till his brain said "no, thanks" :D

lol...what's with everybody always pinning down Gasquet as lesser. Wasn't Fed himself only peaking at 21 and later? Gasquet still has a good way to go, but he is steady in the top 15 now and he only has points to gain at RG and Wimby.
