Sat 25 Mar, 1:14 PM The first qualifying session of the 2006 MotoGP season has been stopped with less than four minutes gone after an oil spill took out six riders - including world champion Valentino Rossi. Alex Hofmann's d'Antin Ducati blew up on its out lap - sending the German into a gravel trap but not before dropping oil all over the approach to the Angel Nieto right hander (turn nine). Rossi first to fall on the fluid - losing the front of his Camel Yamaha - before Kawasaki team-mates Shinya Nakano and Randy de Puniet, Fortuna Honda's Marco Melandri and Team Roberts rider Kenny Roberts were also sent tumbling. Roberts was amongst several riders who then tried to warn others of the danger, before the red flags were waved to stop the session. All riders appear unharmed and qualifying will restart after the track has been cleaned. alexito 03-25-2006, 04:47 PM mañana domingo tendre que madrugar. encima, dice que la transmicion de espn comenzara a las 7am, segun veo, a esa hora es la carrera de 125cc, asi que pasaran las 3 categorias. The performance was quite simply outstanding as not only did Pedrosa out perform fellow Honda team-mates Nicky Hayden and Marco Melandri, but proved to the world that he is more than capable of riding the 990cc Honda RC211V despite his slender build. "The race was more than what I dreamed of," Pedrosa told Eurosport.es at Jerez. "I was very lucky at the start of the race because I was able to get through the crash between Elias and Rossi, and the Gibernau retired a few lap later so two of the strongest riders were already out of the race. "The doors opened for me to challenge for the win but when I caught Capirossi my tyres began to wear so I decided to maintain my second position because it was a good result for me an my team." The 49kg rider did, however, admit to being extremely tired come the end of the race as it was the first time that he completed a race distance since stepping up from 250cc. "It was very difficult because the motorbike is very complicated," explained Pedrosa. "You have to get the bike ready for the race, to tune it right, but even then it was much harder than in 250cc. You want to attack but at the same time you have to look after your tyres, so it's all about consistency." Valentino Rossi has sounded out Pedrosa as a likely challenger for his title, but despite claiming 18 more points that the Italian in race one, the Spaniard has ruled out dethroning the Doctor this season. "I now know that I can compete in MotoGP, but it depends on the circuits," he explained. "Some are more difficult than others, I know Jerez very well but Qatar will be very difficult and I don't know Laguna Seca at all, so I'm not thinking about the title, I just want to be a debutant." alexito 03-28-2006, 09:25 PM Eso nunca se sabe. ;) Pero...tampoco lancemos las campanas al vuelo. Yo sólo hago que recordar al malogrado Kato. :sobbing: la boca se te haga a un lado, prefiero que no gane nunca una carrera a que le paso algo feo. NINA_BCN 03-29-2006, 01:14 PM la boca se te haga a un lado, prefiero que no gane nunca una carrera a que le paso algo feo. :o Yo tampoco. NINA_BCN 03-30-2006, 03:47 PM Moody Blues: Jerez. Wed 29 Mar, 12:36 PM In the latest of his exclusive columns for Crash.net, Eurosport MotoGP commentator Toby Moody reveals more behind-the-scenes news from the season-opening Spanish Grand Prix, at Jerez - a race that saw world champion Valentino Rossi finish just 14th after a first turn fall, while Ducati's Loris Capirossi took victory from brilliant rookie Dani Pedrosa... All countries will have a different view of Jerez. The Italians will say it was wonderful as their own bike won the race with an Italian rider; not something that could have been said of if Rossi had won. The Japanese should be happy because the right Hondas in their eyes are back at the sharp end. Other Japanese should be happy as their tyres won everything. Pole, fastest lap and won the race. The Spanish are happy because of the ever advancing machine that is Pedrosa. Finally they have a Spanish rider back on a Repsol Honda at the front for the first time since Alex Criville. But there's a cheeky feeling that even the Italians were happy to see Rossi on the back foot for the first time in a while. Biaggi winning at Suzuka 1998 was news because it was not only a rookie win, but the first time a Repsol Honda had not won a race for 19 months. There is no fun in seeing a rout of total domination after some years, and now that Rossi has proven that he is the package and that the bike isn't, we are no longer surprised by what he can do. Although I am yet to be convinced with his real pace in a 2006 F1 car with a V8 (less torque than the restricted V10 he drove in Valencia, which is by all accounts easier to drive), there really isn't much else on track we should be surprised about. Seven dwarfs aside. That's why it was perversely good to see him on the back foot over the weekend. With thanks to an exploding d'Antin Ducati on Saturday afternoon, his weekend went from bad to worse like nothing he has previously experienced in MotoGP. Sure, he was 15th in Valencia 2005 (trashed bike in qualifying), and last on the grid in Qatar 2004 (protested to back of grid with Biaggi), but at least his machine was perfectly OK in both instances to fight through the order. This Spanish weekend just gone was no joke for him, the crew, Yamaha nor Michelin. Rossi admitted on Sunday evening that if he hadn't hit the deck at the first corner, he'd have been "fighting for the max with Hayden, not for the victory". For this to happen at a race track he admits to love is bizarre. There has obviously been a straw that has broken the camel's back to induce the chattering that saw him struggle at the test a fortnight ago and over this weekend. I am no engineer, but have the Japanese introduced something that is newer, and in their minds automatically better, leaving them with the age old problem of pride in refusing to return to the 2005 package that worked. Wouldn't be the first time. (Proved as they tested it on Monday.) One fact that is un-arguable is that the fastest Yamaha on Sunday was the Dunlop Yamaha of Carlos Checa! So that proves there's something going on under the Edwards bike too; matter hardly helped by the fact that 50 minutes of Friday afternoon was wasted when it was discovered that his rear tyre was over inflated. Rossi was a little rich on Sunday when he said that Elias was a bit over the top at turn one. "He's young, Spanish, first race with Honda so he had some pressure for sure... but I say I hope it's the first and the last time." I asked Valentino if there was pressure on him in Motegi last year when he put Marco Melandri in hospital with an 'optimistic' braking manoeuvre similar to Elias' at Jerez. He stuttered for a moment before referring back to Sunday's mistake by Elias. "I know exactly, this is racing. Toni came to my box after the race to offer his hand to me and the mechanics saying sorry. I never have something strong against him... I never... It's racing. It happens to me, happens to..." He may be a seven time world champion, but he does need reminding at times that mistakes by other riders do happen - and I wonder how many riders would have crawled under the Yamaha garage door after the race when it was only open by 3 feet to go and apologise to the mechanics, let alone the rider. Anyway, Rossi had only a little chatter at only two places on the Qatar race track during the last test there, so it'll be interesting to see what tyres work at Qatar out of the sea freight containers that were shipped off weeks ago. With Ducati on pole there last year and Bridgestone keen to increase their performances at the slippery surface tracks such as Catalunya (catastrophic disaster last year), Donington and by their own admittance, Qatar, it'll be fascinating to see who can fight the tyre war fight the best, but you fancy that Rossi will just disappear... What Bridgestone did have at Jerez is one hell of a qualifying tyre that even surprised them. A new shape was particularly helpful for them. "Our tyres - like any - drop off a little in the race, but our aim is to keep the drop off on a plateau and not let it fall off a cliff come the end of the race." Just going back half a day, Rossi's weekend was obviously hindered by the Saturday crash on the oil of Hoffman, but the really frightening thing is that there were 30 seconds between the German walking away from his smoking Duke, to Rossi arriving on his arse. Even if the marshals could not tell it had dropped oil, why did Hoffman not tell them to get the flags out? There was even more time before the lemmings then arrived with KRJR, De Puniet, Nakano and Melandri in a very expensive tip. Thank the lord no-one was hurt in such an avoidable situation. Pedrosa is now the Honda Golden Child in the top class. They haven't had a Golden Child since Kato... They've obviously nicked all the young small riders and helped some people. Just how did Lucio Cecchinello find the money to pay for that bike? They must have bamboozled the rules through for 800cc, just as they did with the 4 and 5 cylinder weight limit being the same. It can't have been a co-incidence. Fundamentally, if a rider is quick, he is quick and Honda have seen that in Pedrosa, Elias, Melandri and Stoner. To a certain extent they thought that of Hayden, but they've kicked him aside with Pedrosa after his three years in the works team. Hayden must feel over the moon. How long until he leaves? Monday after Valencia? Why didn't Honda take Vermeulen when they had the chance? I hope Chris can prove Big Red wrong. The guy you've got to feel sorry for is Sete Gibernau. He left Jerez last year already broken but with 20 points. This year he could easily have been on the podium, but instead left with no points at all. Jeremy McWilliams was enjoying himself after a few days testing the BMW MotoGP bike in Spain during the week. "Tobe, don't even bother asking me about it as I have a £100,000 fine clause in my contract with themÂ…" Local papers on Monday in Andalucia were dominated by the Grand Prix, but for all the wrong reasons. Even two Spanish wins were reduced to the bottom of the page as the main pictures were of the complete and utter incompetence of the local Police. With millions of Euros having been spent on a new dual carriageway to the door of the track, things were even worse than any other years, even though give or take the odd donkey and mangy dog, the same numbers were on the door as 2004. :smash: Hard shoulders were used as parking lots by the locals, as enormous fields were left untouched within 100 metres from the main gate. It seems to be that the organisers have got the 'we've got loads of punters so what's the problem' syndrome. Indeed many of the Dorna big wigs would not see the problems either as their hotel was within walking distance of the track. Silverstone used to hold the mantle of the worst F1 race to get in and out of, until Bernie Ecclestone had to mix with us riff-raff due to fog grounding all the helicopters back in 2000. Surprisingly it was after then that there was pressure applied for the A43 road to be widened. The same needs to happen at Jerez one year. One seasoned F1 journalist said it was the worst traffic he'd ever seen, including Mansell Mania ;) Silverstone and Monaco. It would be a shame to lose the place from the calendar as it is one of the best races for the Championship to have, but we are now well into the 21st Century and paying punters have got too much choice for their already spare time. Maybe there have already been discussions as early as Sunday between Dorna and Pedro Pacheco of the local government as he was not allowed onto the podium on race day, formerly a done deal. I can just hear Carmelo Ezpeleta growly voice now. The papers took offence to Pacheco not appearing on the podium, but this is not the first time that he has courted trouble on the podium. The legend has it that Ecclestone banned him from the F1 race podium in 1997, but he still appeared. Not a wise move. It was unreal in this day and age that a 10km journey took over 2 hours on Saturday night from the track into town, and that there would be death and destruction within 300 metres of the circuit entrance on Sunday morning. But at least the 'security' guards had the resources to tow a colleague's fully accredited car from the media car park on Sunday and dump it in the midst of the main entrance for the public just to make it even more congested! It was amateur mess and someone's head needs to roll. Italian TV had an easy Saturday with highlights of 125 and 250 qualifying plus the whole hour of MotoGP going out with no commentary due to a strike amongst TV journalists. "It happens all of the time..." said one relaxed TV pundit on Saturday evening. Mon 03 Apr, 2:52 PM Nicky Hayden will be aiming to claim his sixth successive MotoGP podium at Qatar on Saturday - and build on his early third in the 2006 standings - but admits the event will be something of a step into the unknown. The Repsol Honda rider began his podium run with third in last October's Qatar Grand Prix - then took second in Australia, third in Turkey and second in the Valencia season finale - before opening 2006 with third place at Jerez two weeks ago. One place ahead of Hayden in that event was rookie team-mate Dani Pedrosa but, unlike the Spaniard, Nicky is developing the all-new version of the RC211V - and will be keen to reap the rewards of his efforts as soon as possible. "I can't wait to see what's going to happen here," said Hayden ahead of this weekend's event. "With pre-season testing followed by the first race, we were at Jerez for quite a while, so I'm really looking forward to getting out on a new track. Hopefully we've got a good package for the circuit. "I quite like the layout here - it's got some fun stuff. There are a couple of banked corners that are fun and some long, long right handers which are pretty cool. I'd say my favourite part is the combination of Turn One, Turn Two and Turn Three - two banked corners followed by a fast right-hander. "Some of the teams were testing here earlier in the year while we were at a different track. Nonetheless we're ready to go. It's certainly going to be a different atmosphere compared to Jerez where it's a packed house because at this place there is a pretty thin crowd," he admitted. alexito 04-03-2006, 06:33 PM los que relatan aca la carreras, me aburren estos años atras diciendo que pedrosa gana por ser mas liviano y ahora dice lo mismo, en motogp hay peso minimo, esta con bronca porque es fanatico de biaggi, y a biaggi lo echaron para poner a pedrosa y hayden quejandose que no tiene la moto de pedrosa. primero que hayden hace años que esta ahi y no hace nada. pedrosa de golpe viene y hace un 2do puesto espetacular sin experiencia. hayden tiene que justificarse en algo. parecido a biaggi. siempre con escusas. The pair have been at loggerheads recently about whether Rossi, 26, would succeed if he ever switched to the four-wheeled race category. Reigning champion Alonso, of Spain, turned down Rossi's challenge to go head-to-head in a motor racing showdown to settle the question of who is the quickest driver. Italy's Rossi doubted Alonso's claim that his schedule is just too busy. "Maybe Alonso has made some calculations and realised he would lose," he told Motorcycle News. Rossi also reckons Alonso would be at least 12 seconds slower than him on a 260hp GP bike. :haha: This is the neverending story. :haha: Suzi 04-05-2006, 10:35 AM handbags at dawn :o Suzi 04-05-2006, 10:36 AM well when a cat fight ensues they can just start grabbing at each others hair :p NINA_BCN 04-05-2006, 10:36 AM It's becoming worse than Rossi vs Max. :rolls: alexito 04-06-2006, 02:08 AM menos mal que se me dio por entrar a la web de motogp, y me entero que el premio de qatar se correra el sabado, asi que hoy jueves madrugare para ver las clasificaciones. Tue 11 Apr, 12:27 PM In the latest of his exclusive columns for Crash.net, Eurosport MotoGP commentator Toby Moody reveals more behind-the-scenes news from the Qatar Grand Prix, at Losail - round two of the 2006 world championship... Smaller engines, bigger grids? On four wheels for a moment: Max Moseley is pushing the fact that it is the teams who are the embodiment of the F1 Championship, and not the manufacturers who come and go at the Board Members' will. "See what has happened in the WRC and IRL as an example as to what happens when manufacturers are left to come and go..." said Moseley recently. And he is bang onÂ… Carmelo Ezpeleta of Dorna needs to widen his horizons and think out of the box to keep teams in MotoGP. Honda have been making the rules in MotoGP, and continue to do so into the 800cc era, Yamaha have only been saved from years in the wilderness by Rossi actually wanting to leave Honda, Suzuki have been doing their own thing for years, whilst Kawasaki need some success in any shape or form. Aprilia have gone, as has KTM together with their massive pot of Red Bull money (the new tobacco). Team Pons, race winners nearly every year since 1996 have gone, together with WCM, massively strong race winners and potential championship contenders only five years ago. So just what has Ezpeleta got up his sleeve? Team Roberts have opened a door this weekend after setting the fastest time of the day on Thursday. It has proven big Kenny's gospel of not letting the Japanese run this paddock too much (ref back to Moseley's comment about WRC manufacturer desertion). He has built his own chassis, finally stuck an engine in that works, and proven that he can beat the rest. Hey - that's what F1 does. And whatever you think of F1, it has worked there for Williams, McLaren, Jordan (1999) Benetton (before it turned into Renault). Ezpeleta says openly that he will pay double the start money to teams who run hand-me-down bikes in 2007. But there are no hand me down bikes next year. Just who the hell is going to be able to run an 800cc two rider team for about $2 - $3m? Paul Denning of Suzuki says that they are committed enough in making their own bikes work. The same is true at Kawasaki. "We will not run any other bikes but our own next year," said Harald Eckl. So with Tech 3, d'Antin and maybe Konica Minolta struggling for bikes, who is going to replace the five bikes we may miss on the grid? Is that where Mario Illien (Ilmor) is going to come to the fore with his engine project that he's doing with Eskil Suter. With an engine already up and running, rumours are that it is the smallest of devices known. Just who has got $5m a year to pay for the bikes, the team, travel, cheap riders and no crashes, and risk that on a bike/team that is a Swiss version of a Team Roberts? Why do I not mention Roberts in potentially not being around in future years? "I hope they got into this (Honda KR V5) project for more than a single year," he said on Thursday. Let's hope that Dorna will chip in to keep the grids full. Well... full-ish. Let's also hope that Dorna are not too cold hearted about the number on the grid, as at the end of the day you never see the other runners further down the order on TV once the race has shaken out. Should we have eight bike races and show everybody all of the time? Lord let us pray that doesn't happen, but being slaves to TV for the sake of a race is what happens when in Qatar. (There were 44 people in the grandstands during the afternoon MotoGP session on Thursday, with a crowd figure of 3,291 given for Saturday. Someone counted the grandstand seats at only 2,500...) Just going on with an aside; "I don't know why we even have the MSMA - why not ring Honda direct?" said one team manager. "Or maybe the Japanese are deliberately trying to price the sport out of the range of others so that they can remain at the top?" he continued. "190cc less for the sake of safety is not the issue." Exactly why are we going to 800cc? For further Japanese domination? Whatever is going on at the moment in filling grids for next year, there must be a great deal cooking to keep MotoGP healthy. Ezpeleta must realise that making a token gesture of a bit more start money is not going to have people rushing in. Repsol Smiling HRC sponsors Repsol may be back to where they were in 1999. With Alex Criville winning the 500cc title that year, a Repsol sponsorship person recently said that their input from 1995 to that winning day in Rio with Alex made everything worth while... Now they have a double whammy with Pedrosa. Not only is he Spanish for Repsol to chuck an ad campaign behind, the First Class travel, personal fitness trainer, personal advisor, personal press officer etc, but Honda have someone who can take the whole team forward after the doldrums of Ukawa, Barros and Biaggi. Hayden must have been shattered after Jerez. His race result in Jerez was like scoring six goals in football match, and still being on the losing side. Pedrosa and Honda wiped Hayden's nose in it by having him ride the bike that ain't the quickest one. But that all changed in Qatar with Hayden once more pushing to his rightfully earned spot on the podium. If he could just crack that nut of winning another race, then Repsol Honda will be very strong indeed to fight Rossi. Honda must help the pair of them to crack the slightly limping Yamaha monster. Midnight changes Suzuki had 13 engine changes over the whole weekend. The spanners must have been worn out! Air feed problems into the air valves was the main problem, but come the race Elias and Roberts said that water was pouring out of the back of Vermeulen's Suzuki. The same seems to be true for Hopkins' bike before he kicked the metallic blue Suzuki live on international television. Team Boss Paul Denning said after the race that the team had no problems with John kicking the side out of it so publicly: "John has never been so motivated for success. He was apologetic when he returned, but I shared his frustration after a very difficult weekend for the whole team." The Japanese are never happy at people 'dissing' their products and no matter what Hopkins or Denning take on the situation, the rumblings in Japan will not be great. Is Suzuki turning into the BAR F1 team of MotoGP? A super-smooth and slick marketing campaign, but alas no wins. Button didn't kick his burning Honda F1 car when yards from the line in Australia; a measure of his composure. Bad circuit comes good Bridgestone were happy with their close third of Capirossi; "This result is a more important result than Jerez for us because we are beginning to eliminate our bad circuits..." said a Bridgestone representative. The bad circuits for them have been the slippery surface circuits; Qatar, Donington, Catalunya, China and Turkey. "We are working from the bottom up with regards to getting our tyres to work at our worst circuits." Japan, Malaysia, Phillip Island, Mugello and Brno are Bridgestone favourite circuits for the Japanese rubber. With rumours of a budgetary spend of $100 million in F1, surely there are some resources available to get them up at the sharp end of MotoGP consistently after choosing MotoGP over WRC some years ago. It seems they may have made the right decision considering the downturn of WRC in recent years. The tyre war is well under way considering Michelin's dominance of every championship since 1994 in premier class Grand Prix. (What I am still very surprised about is that Honda do not have any Bridgestone tyres on their bikes in order that Big Red can keep an eye on Bridgestone's development, although Honda will say they were very happy indeed with Michelin's overnight response facility when in Europe, where they make tyres overnight from Friday's data.) Michelin were able to freight some tyres out to Qatar that were 'post-Jerez spec' and so were happy to be back atop of the pile, whilst Dunlop got a right slating from Luis d'Antin after qualifying, even though 24 hrs later, Carlos Checa's Yamaha did lap times similar to Edwards come the end of the race. Blast from the past Some wag in the press office asked over the weekend if anyone knew what had happened to Martin WildingÂ…? Wilding was involved in the paddock from 2001 to about 2004 with dealings that included the Chinese Grand Prix taking place at the Great Wall of China, a potential Bahrain GP and a massive thrust in getting British riders into MotoGP. Fisico 05-23-2006, 11:46 AM yeah i prefer a bit of competition plus its nice seeing Rossi is normal and not invincible now as it gives it a bit of life into it, cos normally i just watch 125 or 250 as i find it much more thrillin, but seeing i dont have ES now its just motogp for me!!! it's been a good season so far. the newbies Pedrosa and stoner are doing really well, and the top 5 are only separated by 18 points. somehow hayden is leading the championship even though he hasn't won a race yet this season, i guess its probably down to his consistency... but i miss the old Valentino/Sete duels, the fact that neither of them is in the top 5, especially Rossi, shows how unpredictable motoGP has been this year Suzi 05-23-2006, 12:00 PM same here but sete is atm :smash: soooooo i use to love the biaggi rossi ones as well AGES ago! Fisico 05-23-2006, 12:12 PM sete hasnt been on the pace for a while  last year he had a lot of bad luck, this year he's just been slow  i miss the Rossi/biaggi duels too, what made them so great was the pure hatred they had for each other :haha: and even though i didnt like biaggi at all, motoGP needs him! Suzi 05-23-2006, 12:19 PM yeah i just think that he needs a kick up the butt or maybe its just the bike that doesnt suit him or i still think he needs a kick up butt!! Fisico 05-23-2006, 12:35 PM  its his first year with ducati so he's probably still getting used to the bike but im definitely not against giving him a kick up the butt if he doesnt get up on the podium soon! Suzi 05-23-2006, 12:46 PM he'll be in for a shock then if we turn up like at Mugello ready to kick him up the podium lol  Fisico 05-23-2006, 01:08 PM haha it would give him an incentive to do well then! Suzi 05-23-2006, 01:18 PM exactly!!! i so want it to get better for him!!!!!! if caffe latte can win so can sete!!!! The Italian, a five-time MotoGP champion, had tested extensively for Ferrari and was linked to a race drive in 2007 after some impressive performances. But he today committed his immediate future to MotoGP, where he is struggling to defend his crown after a troubled start to the season. Rossi told the Gazzetta dello Sport: "There will be no Formula One, at least for the moment. I will continue in MotoGP. "It has been a wonderful experience, both from a technical point of view and from a personal standpoint. I have met some wonderful people. "However, I feel that my job in motorcycling is not yet ended. I have many stimuli and I will therefore continue in MotoGP for the time being. "I wish Ferrari luck in achieving the same objective as I have, to win the world championship title." Rossi's decision met with a warm welcome from Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso, who said simply: "Good. I hope we can stop talking about him." (Fernando...:smash: ) Fisico 05-25-2006, 12:11 PM Rossi's decision met with a warm welcome from Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso, who said simply: "Good.
