Nicolas Kiefer: ''Die familiäre Atmosphäre hat's mir angetan''

Dem österreichischen Bruder von Sport1 gab Nicolas Kiefer ein Interview.

St. Anton - Nach 2003 ist Nicolas Kiefer bereits zum zweiten Mal bei der tele.ring-Tennis-Trophy in St. Anton am Arlberg zu Gast.

Die ehemalige Nummer vier der Welt konnte sich 2004 nach zuletzt mageren Jahren wieder in die Weltspitze des Herren-Tennis zurückspielen.

Unter anderem vier Finali (Memphis, Los Angeles, Indianapolis, Scottsdale) spülten ihn auf den 21. Weltranglistenplatz nach vorne. Daran konnte auch eine Handgelenksverletzung bei den US Open, die ihm den Rest der Saison kostete, nichts ändern.

Sport1 traf den 27-jährigen Deutschen in St. Anton und plauderte mit ihm über seine überraschende Leistungssteigerung, seine Vorbereitung und Ziele für nächste Saison und auch über ÖFB-Teamspieler Roman Wallner, der ihm als großer Hannover-Fan gut bekannt ist.

Sport1: Nach deinen Pech- und Seuchenjahren hast du dich 2004 ja wieder toll auf der ATP-Tour zurückgemeldet. Wie kommt diese plötzliche Leistungssteigerung?

Nicolas Kiefer: Ja, ich bin wirklich sehr zufrieden mit der vergangenen Saison. Ich habe vier Finali gespielt. Das mir gezeigt, dass ich wieder dran bin und dass ich es noch kann. Ein Grund war sicherlich, dass ich viel an meiner Fitness gearbeitet habe. Aber auch in das Spiel selber habe ich viel Zeit investiert. Es sind viele kleine Faktoren. Wie ein Puzzle, dass sich zusammensetzt. Ich habe zum Glück nicht den Kopf in den Sand gesteckt, sondern einfach hart gearbeitet. Und das ist natürlich schön, wenn man weiß, dass das Früchte trägt.

Sport1: Könnte ein Mitgrund für den Umschwung der Trainerwechsel gewesen sein? Seit Oktober 2003 trainierst du ja mit dem Schweden Thomas Hogstedt.

Kiefer: Das hat sicher auch seinen Teil dazu beigetragen. Ich verstehe mich mit ihm ausgezeichnet. Am Platz muss ich seine Vorgaben allerdings immer noch selbst umsetzen.

Sport1: Sportliches Highlight für dich war 2004 wohl trotz des knapp verloren gegangenem Finale die olympische Silbermedaille im Doppel in Athen.

Kiefer: Das war es auf alle Fälle! Am Anfang konnte ich mich zwar noch nicht richtig damit identifizieren. Zudem hatten wir es natürlich selbst in der Hand Gold zu holen, so knapp wie wir dran waren. Ich habe dann erst mit der Zeit bemerkt, wie wichtig diese Medaille war. Viele Leute habe sich mit mir über Silber gefreut. Ich habe irrsinnig viele Gratulationen auf meiner Homepage (www.nicolaskiefer.com) bekommen. Mittlerweile bin ich sehr stolz auf diese Medaille. Das Erste was ich mache, wenn ich von meinen Reisen nach Hause komme, ist, dass ich mir die Medaille anschaue. Das ist einfach ein super gutes Gefühl. Da kommen Emotionen wieder hoch.

Sport1: Wie geht's deinem Handgelenk, dass du dir bei den US Open verletzt hast und wegen dem du die restliche Saison verpasst hast?

Kiefer: Danke für die Nachfrage. Es geht schon wieder sehr gut. Es war natürlich bitter, dass ich drei Monate verpasst habe. Ich habe eine Therapie gemacht und bin seit vier, fünf Wochen wieder schmerzfrei. Vor drei Wochen habe ich in Thailand in drei verschiedenen Städten Schaukämpfe bestritten und überhaupt nichts mehr gespürt. Vor allem die Wärme (35 Grad Celsius) dort hat dem Gelenk und mir ziemlich gut getan.

Sport1: Wie schaut deine restliche Saisonvorbereitung aus?

Kiefer: Nach der Tennis-Trophy in St. Anton werde ich nach Monte Carlo fliegen, dort bis Weihnachten trainieren und versuchen die Zeit optimal zu nutzen. Die Feiertage verbringe ich dann bei meinen Eltern und meiner Freundin. Auf das freue ich mich schon sehr, da ich alle ja sonst so selten sehe.

Sport1: Reist deine Freundin nicht oft zu deinen Turnieren mit?

Kiefer: Nächstes Jahr dann schon wieder. Sie hat heuer ihr Staatsexamen fertiggemacht und dann begleitet sie mich. Das ist dann natürlich schön, wenn sie wieder mit dabei ist.

Sport1: Du bist ja schon zum zweiten Mal bei der Tennis-Trophy in St. Anton mit dabei. Anscheinend scheint's dir hier zu gefallen, oder nicht?

Kiefer: Ja, doch. Auf alle Fälle. Es ist wirklich traumhaft hier. Ich wohne in einem Super-Hotel und fühle mich hier pudelwohl. Vor allem die familiäre Atmosphäre hat's mir angetan. In Wimbledon wird unter den Spielern meist schon immer über St. Anton gesprochen. Ob man eingeladen ist und ob man kommt. Es ist einfach geil hier!

Sport1: Mit dem Skifahren konntest du dich aber noch nicht so anfreunden.

Kiefer: Das ist richtig. Das ist nicht wirklich mein Sport. Ich schau's mir zwar liebend gerne im Fernsehen an - auch Biathlon und Langlauf und so. Selbst Ski zu fahren ist aber nicht so mein Ding. Aber vielleicht geh ich es nach meiner Tennis-Karriere an.

Sport1: Wie schauen deine Ziele für die nächste Saison aus. Die Rückkehr in die Top Ten?

Kiefer: In erster Linie will ich gesund bleiben und einfach einen Schritt nach dem anderen machen. Ich will einfach Spaß am Tennis haben. Besonderes freue ich mich allerdings auf die großen Turniere - auf die Grand Slams werde ich sicher mein Augenmerk lenken.

Sport1: Dein Vertrag mit adidas ist ja diese Saison ausgelaufen. Wie schaut's mit einem neuen Ausrüstervertrag aus?

Kiefer: Es ist klar, dass der Zeitpunkt des Vertragsendes mit dem Olympia-Silber und den Erfolgen im letzten Jahr natürlich sehr günstig für mich kam. Der Vertrag ist jetzt aus und ich bin eigentlich für alle Angebote offen.

Sport1: Stichwort Daviscup: Nach dem Abstieg aus der Weltgruppe muss wohl der sofortige Wiederaufstieg das Ziel sein.

Kiefer: Klar, auf alle Fälle. Der Abstieg in der Slowakei war halt auch sehr unglücklich. Wir hatten da viel Verletzungspech. Das Duell im März gegen Südafrika ist natürlich ein Pflichtsieg für uns. Und dann geht's ja vielleicht sogar gegen Österreich. Nach St. Anton geht's dann aber leider nicht - nach Graz-Unterpremstätten sind ja dann wir wieder dran mit der Austragung. Allgemein ist aber zu sagen, dass der Daviscup für mich einen hohen Stellenwert hat. Man wir ja auch nicht jünger. Mit bald 28 Jahren bin ich jetzt aber im besten Tennis-Alter und ich traue mir und natürlich dem Team da noch viel zu.

Sport1: An deiner Mütze ist zu erkennen, dass du ein großer Hannover-Fan bist. Wie sehr geht deine Beziehung zu 96?

Kiefer: Oh ja, von Kindesbeinen an bin ich Hannover-Fanatiker. Ich kenne viele Spieler und gehe auch zu jedem Heimspiel wenn ich zu Hause bin. Ich bin sogar oft beim Training und spiele bei Übungsmatches wie 8 gegen 8 mit. Die Spieler dort fragen mich auch immer wieder, wann ich wieder komme. Sogar einen eigenen Spind in den Umkleidekabinen habe ich schon. Es macht Sportlern einfach viel Freude, wenn sie mit anderen Sportlern Kontakte pflegen.

Sport1: Hast du auch schon Österreichs Teamstürmer Roman Wallner kennengelernt?

Kiefer: Na klar! Erst vor vier Wochen oder so habe ich im gegnerischen Team gegen ihn gespielt. Ich spiele meist im offensiven Mittelfeld und da krachen wir dann schon ab und zu zusammen. Er ist ein Super-Typ! Ein ganz lieber, der noch sehr, sehr jung ist. Ich bin sicher, dass er bald seine Chance bekommen wird. Ob er sie dann auch nützt, liegt dann natürlich auch an der richtigen Einstellung.

St Anton - after 2003 (NB this is incorrect, it should be 2002), Nicolas is taking part at the tele.ring Tennis Trophy for the second time

The former world #4 has finally played himself back into the world elite after several poor years.

Among others, four finals (Memphis, LA, Indianapolis, Scottsdale) propelled him to the #21 spot. A wrist injury, picked up at the US Open did not affect this.

Sport1 met the 27-year-old German in St Anton and chatted with him about his surprising comeback, his preparations and goals for next season and also about the Austrian player Roman Wallner, whom he knows well from being a Hannover 96 fan.

Sport1: After the years of bad luck and other interruptions, you have made a great comeback in 2004. Where did this performance improvement come from?

NK: Yes, I am really satisfied with this season. I played in 4 finals. This showed me that I am back again and that I can still do it. One reason for sure is that I worked on my fitness. But I also invested a lot of time in the game. There are several small factors. Like the pieces of a puzzle. Fortunately I did not stick my head in the sand, rather I just worked hard. And of course it's nice to know that this has borne fruit.

Sport1: Could another reason be the change in trainer? Since October 2003 you have been working with Thomas Hogstedt.

NK: For sure that also played a part. I get on excellently with him. However on the court I am the only one responsible for implementing what I have learned from him.

Sport1: The sporting highlight of 2004 was the Olympic silver medal, despite the narrow loss in a gigantic final.

NK: It definitely was! At first I was not able to come to terms with it. We had every chance to win the gold, so close that we were :sad: . Only after a while did I realise how important this medal was. Many people celebrated with me over the silver. I got a huge amount of congratulatory messages on my homepage. Since then I have become very proud of this medal. The first thing I do when I return home from travelling is to look at it. It is simply a great feeling. It brings back those big emotions.

Sport1: How is your wrist, which you injured at the US Open, causing you to miss the rest of the season?

NK: Thank you for asking. It's fine, it's great again. Of course it was a bitter disappointment that I had to miss 3 months. I got therapy for it and have been pain-free for the past 4, 5 weeks now. 3 weeks ago in Thailand I played exhibition matches in 3 different cities and didn't feel any pain. Above all, the heat (35° C/95°F) did the joint and me good

Sport1: How does the rest of your preseason training look?

NK: After the Tennis Trophy in St Anton I will fly to Monte Carlo, train there until Christmas and try to use the time available optimally. I will spend the holidays with my parents and girlfriend. I'm looking forward to that, as I don't see them much otherwise.

Sport1: Does your girlfriend travel much to your tournaments?

NK: Next year she will more. She did her state exams this year so she will be able to accompany me. Of course it is nice if she is there with me.

Sport1: This is your second time at the Tennis Trophy in St Anton. You seem to like it here, do you not?

NK: Yes, definitely. It is really great here. I'm staying in a great hotel and feel very at ease. Above all the family atmosphere appeals to me. At Wimbledon the players are always talking about St Anton, who has been invited and who is playing. It's just brilliant here!

Sport1: You didn't take so much to the skiing.

NK: That is true. It's not really my sport. I like to watch it on tv, biathlon and Nordic skiing and suchlike. It is not my thing to actually ski myself. But maybe I'll give it a go after my tennis career ends.

Sport1: What are your goals for next season? A return to the top 10?

NK: First of all I want to remain healthy and take each day as it comes. I just want to have fun with tennis again. I especially look forward to the big tournaments - I will especially be focusing my attention on the Grand Slams.

Sport1: Your contract with Adidas runs out at the end of this season. How are things looking with a new equipment sponsor?

NK: It is clear that this has happened at a good time for me, what with the Olympic silver and the successes of the past year. The contract is finished and I am open to all offers.

Sport1: Davis Cup: after the relegation from the World Group, promotion back up must be an immediate goal.

NK: Yes of course. The relegation in Slovakia was very unfortunate. We had very bad luck with injuries. The tie against South Africa in March is naturally a must-win for us. And then maybe we could be facing Austria. Unfortunately that would not be in St Anton - it would take place in Graz-Unterpremstätten. In general it is correct to say that the Davis Cup is of big importance to me. I am not getting any younger. At nearly 28 I am at my tennis peak and have great confidence both in myself and in the team.

Sport1: From your cap it is to be seen that you are a big Hannover fan. What is your relationship to 96?

NK: Oh yes, I have been a Hannover fanatic since childhood. I know several of the players and go to every home game when I am at home. I attend a lot of their training sessions and play in training games like 8 vs 8. The players there are always asking me when I'll be back again. I even have my own locker in the changing rooms :eek: . It is always fun for a sportsman to have contact with other sports people.

Sport1: Do you know Austria's national striker, Roman Wallner?

NK: Yes of course! Only about 4 weeks ago I played in a team against him. I play as an attacking midfielder and he and I had some coming-togethers on the pitch. He's a great guy. A nice guy who is still so young. I'm sure that he will get his big chance soon. Whether he uses it depends of course on the correct attitude.

I agree with him about the hotel where he is staying in St Anton. I was staying in the hotel directly opposite it last year (also 4*, only the best for moi :lol: ) and my friend and I were in the players' hotel a few times. The bar area is great, really relaxing, and the staff are nice too. We saw a good few of the players too - Rainer ( :hearts: ), Koubek, Schalken, Patty Schnyder.
Pity he doesn't like to ski though. Rainer's an ok skier, as far as I know.
Girls, looks like you will have to bitch-slap his girlfriend out of the way to get near him next year ;) . It'll be good for him to have her around, though, IMO.

Vier Mal trat Kiwi bislang gegen den Niederländer Sjeng Schalken an. Vier Mal gewann er. Das fünfte Duell bedeutet auch die fünfte Finalteilnahme von Kiwi - heute in St. Anton (2. match nach 18 Uhr).

"Ich bin mit dem Flugzeug angereist - abreisen würde ich gerne mit einem Auto", scherzt Kiwi in Anspielung auf den Siegespreis, einen KIA Sportage-Geländewagen. Ernsthaft fügte er hinzu: "Ich dachte nicht, dass ich nach meiner langen verletzungspause schon wieder so weit bin. Jetzt habe ich die Chance, das Jahr mit einem Sieg abzuschließen. Was gibt es Schöneres?"
Looks like this did write the admin of Kiwi's site and not Kiwi himself. Basically, there's not much new info in this update, it says that Kiwi already won four times against Schalken (which I told you already) and it gives the quote that he would like leaving with a car today.

The only new thing is the last sentence where Kiwi says: "I never thought that I would play so well again after such a long injury. Now I have the chance to conclude the year with a win. Is there anything more beautiful?"

Perfekt, eine Super-Woche. Das Jahr mit einem Sieg abzuschließen, endlich ein Finale zu gewinnen, das ist klasse. Nach 1:3 habe ich im Finale gegen Sjeng Schalken richtig aufgedreht, beim 6:3, 6:4 mein bestes Tennis im Turnierverlauf gezeigt. Ich fühle mich körperlich schon wieder auf dem Höchststand von vor meiner Verletzungspause. Spielerisch fehlt natürlich noch ein wenig.

Ein schöneres Coomeback geht eigentlich gar nicht. Die Verletzungspause war eine verdammt harte Zeit. Aber jetzt bin ich zurück. Vier Mal bin ich in diesem Jahr in einem Finale gescheitert. Endlich hat's geklappt. Es ist der erste Turniersieg in meiner Zusammenarbeit mit Thomas Hogstedt. Der bedeutet mir richtig viel, auch wenn es "nur" ein Einladungsturnier war. Heute Abend werden wir feiern.

Morgen früh möchte ich vielleicht noch ein bißchen Ski fahren, ehe es am Mittag weiter nach Monte Carlo geht. Meinen Siegespreis, den KIA Sportage, muß ich erst einmal hier stehen lassen. Vor mir liegen nun zehn Tage Training auf Hartplatz, ehe Weihnachten gefeiert wird und es am 26.12. nach Australien geht. Ich kann es kaum erwarten...

Perfect, a great week. To conclude the year with a win and winning a final after all is great. After 1:3 I was on a surge and showed my best tennis of this week in this 6:3 6:4 win. Physically, I already feel on the highest level after my injury. Play-wise is a bit still missing, of course.

A nicer comeback actually couldn't exist. The injury break was a damn hard time. But now I'm back. Four times this year, I lost in a final. But now I finally won one. It's the first tournament since working together with Thomas Hogstedt. It really means a lot for me, although it was "only" an exhibition. Tonight, we will celebrate.

Tomorrow morning, I would perhaps like to go skiing a little bit [although he said he doesn't like it too much before] before we move on to Monte Carlo. I have to leave my prize, the KIA Sportage car, behind me for now. Now I have 10 days with practise on hardcourt in front of me before Christmas will be celebrated and before I will go to Australia on December 26th. I can hardly wait for that...

21.12.2004: Christmas with family
I'm back from Monte Carlo for a few days. Christmas is up next. I will spend the Christmas days with my parents and with my girlfriend. In peace and without hurry. There will be stress soon enough again. On the 2nd Christmas Day my plane already leave to Australia. That's the start of the new season.

In review, I can be very content about 2004. I managed to stabilize my performances again. I thank everybody who helped me for that.

I would also like to thank all fans, whose faith and encouragement helped me enormously. I wish you a merry Christmas and a good start for the new year.

Obviously I'm not Mary :) but I spoke to Nicolas in L.A. (in July) about making an English version of his site. He said that as soon as the German one was up and running for awhile then they would do an English version.

My personal opinion? English is his third language (French his second) and the website will take more of his time to write an English entry as well as a German version. I think that he wants to keep this as personally done as possible. I'm sure it takes time out of his rare spare time to post a journal entry so to have to write in two languages might steal more of that time.

A lot of work went into his website. Personally, I'm fine with having to use the babelfish translation. I've gotten used to it :D

I have posted in his message book I think a while back, if he had the time just post a few words in English in his journal entry. He could write a entry in German and then a few words in English. I don't need a whole English site.

However, Neely and Space Cadet offer great translations :) I'm just grateful that he takes the time to personally update his journal. I just hope he doesn't mind that I write my messages in English on his site :p

I highly doubt that he minds messages written in English. I post to his guestbook a couple of times a month. Besides, he doesn't acknowledge just his German-speaking supporters but all his supporters.

I respect him for updating his site as often as he does. He's not obligated to his supporters at any time but especially not the brief off-season.

When July gets here and closer to the Los Angeles tournament I will tell him that I will be there. It was doing just that, that told me that he reads all the entries in his guestbook.

Siebeneinhalb Jahre sind eine lange Zeit. Dann ist es plötzlich vorbei und keiner kann erklären, warum. Inga und ich haben uns über die Weihnachtstage nach einer langen, tollen Beziehung getrennt, uns aber einen weiterhin freundschaftlich, fairen Umgang versprochen. Ich habe ihr vieles zu verdanken.

7 and a half years are a long time. Then, suddenly, it's over and nobody can explain why. Inga and me have broken up during Christmas days after a long and great relationship, but we promised each other a continued friendly and fair contact. I owe her a lot.

03.01.2005 : Gelungener Jahresauftakt
Das war zum Auftakt gleich ein Mega-Programm. Sjeng Schalken, den ich ja auch in meinem letzten Match 2004, beim Finale in St. Anton, bezwungen hatte, hat mir alles abverlangt. Dann noch das Wetter: brutaler Wind, zwei Regenunterbrechungen. Spielbeginn um 21 Uhr Ortszeit, Ende um 0.45 Uhr. Hauptsache gewonnen. Habe gefightet wie ein Tier. Spielerisch hingegen war es nicht so klasse. Da muß ich mich noch besser bewegen. Aber das war mein erstes Pflichtmatch seit 4 Monaten! Nach dem Matchball ist mir ein Stein vom Herzen gefallen.

Jetzt bin ich müde und platt, will nur noch in mein Bett. Habe noch ein paar Gedanken und Ideen, die ich morgen mitteile.

Mit dem Jahreswechsel hat sich mein Outfit geändert. Nicht etwa, weil ich einem modischen Trend nachgehe, nein, mein Vertrag mit Adidas ist nach 5-jähriger Zusammenarbeit zu Ende gegangen. Es waren sportlich fünf aufregende, höchst unterschiedliche Jahre, in denen ich stets aber eine Konstante hatte: den Ausrüster. Es war eine gute Partnerschaft, für die ich mich bedanke.

03.01.2005: Successful kick-off for the new season
That was a difficult task right at the beginning. Sjeng Schalken, whom I defeated in my last 2004 match in the final of St. Anton, made it very difficult for me. And then the weather: strong winds and two rain delays. Play started at 21:00 local time, ended at 0:45. Main thing is that I won. I fighted like an animal. My play wasn't that good, I must move better. But it was my first official match since 4 months. It took a big load off my mind after the match point.
I'm tired and exhausted now, I just want to go to bed. I have a few more thoughts and ideas about that I will let you know tomorrow.

With the new year, my outfit has changed. Not because I'm following a new fashion trend, but because my contract with Adidas has expired after a five year long cooperation. It have been five exciting and very different years, in which I always had one constant: the endorsement.

I just can't get rid of all these images in my mind. Only a few weeks ago I toured with my collegue Paradorn Srichaphan around in his home country Thailand, such a beautiful country, and I enjoyed the hospitality of the people there and I stayed overnight at the hotel Banyan Tree in Phuket. Now everything is destroyed there.

Yet at the same day as all that has happened, I tried to reach Paradorn by SMS but I didn't hear anything from him in return. Meanwhile I have spoken with him and offered him to help where I can. I would like to play an exhibition with him to generate money and to help. We will fix a date together at Melbourne.

Until then, I started another campaign so far: Aces for the tsunami victims. For every ace I hit during my tournaments in Australia -now Adelaide, then Sydney and finally Melbourne, I will donate 100 Dollar. In the match against Sjeng Schalken I hit five aces for 500 Dollar. I would like to raise this value against my next opponet, the Frenchman Cyrial Saulnier - and, of course, I would like to stay in the tournament as long as possible. nächsten Gegner, den Franzosen Cyril Saulnier. Now I have another strong reason to win.

People told me that there is no TV broadcast (until semis or final?) and the homepage also doesn't provide any scoreboard.

I think it should be the law that websites need livescoring...

Sure, if somebody with knowledge installed it on the tournament homepages... then they should connect the scoreboards on the courts with the internet... or they should give the chair umpires electronic scoring devices as it's done at some tournaments.

It wouldn't have to be such a detailled scoreboard like at Grand Slams or Masters or a few other tournaments, just the scores and numbers would be enough.

There would be plenty of possibilities, but some tournaments don't have a scoreboard for years and I'm not sure when they finally would like to change this.

Not sure, but I think they will broadcast the SF matches here in Australia. If so, I will try to give score game by game ;)

Erstes Turnier, zweiter Sieg. Gegen Cyril Saulnier, gegen den ich bei den US Open zuletzt gewonnen hatte, ist schon vieles besser gelaufen. Ich habe mich besser bewegt, besser zum Ball gestanden. Und das, obwohl es wieder sehr windig war. Langsam kommt die Form, kommt der Rhythmus, der mir zuletzt fehlte.

Zu meiner Chaity kommen leider nur 100 US Doller hinzu, weil mir nur ein Ass gelang. Aber ich bin weiter im Turnier, kann also weiter sammeln. Sensationell, was ich aus Deutschland hörte: Schumi gibt 10 Mio Dollar. Chapeau!

Übrigens sind wahnsinnig viele deutsche Fans hier. Wußte gar nicht, dass es eine halbe Stunde von Adelaide entfernt ein deutsches Dorf gibt. Wenn ich Zeit habe, werd ich dort mal vorbeischauen und ein schönes Schnitzel essen gehen...

First tournament, second win. Against Cyril Saulner, against whom I won in the US Open, things went really well. I was moving better and was better placed playing the ball. This, despite the weather being very windy once again. Slowly my form and the rhythm, which were missing lately, are coming back again.
Alas I was only able to add $100 to my charity fund, because I only hit one ace. But I'm further on in the tournament and so can score more. Sensational news from Germany: Schumi (Michael Schumacher) has donated $10million. Hats off to him!
There is a huge amount of German fans here. I never knew that there is a German village a half-hour away from Adelaide. If I have the time, I will head up there and dine one a nice schnitzel...

There is a local chain of resturants here in Austin, Tx, called Weiner Schnitzel. There is a lot of German settlers who settled around here in Texas and you'll find several German sounding towns nearby with lots of German food. I can eat a bratwurst wrapped in a flour tortilla (remember I'm in Texas) all day long.

Besides the food, there is a lot of German influence in central Texas with Oktoberfest and the weiner dog races, where we race daschunds. My dogs Oscar and Otto never cross the finish line ;)

I translated the latest entry with babelfish. He mentioned something about being surprised of the reaction to his hitting aces & donating a $100/each. Is he surprised by the compliments or did someone make a negative comment?

Aus im Viertelfinale. Ärger. Matchball vergeigt im zweiten...

Nein, so will ich das nicht stehen lassen. Ein guter Jahresauftakt nach langer Verletzung. Zwei gute Spieler geschlagen, dem dritten mit Pech unterlegen - und das nach der langen Verletzungspause!

Ich bin noch nicht stabil, kann noch nicht konstant auf dem Niveau spielen, das ich vor meiner Verletzung hatte. Damit muß ich mich abfinden, auch wenn es mir mit meinem Ehrgeiz schwer fällt.

Ich darf nicht an die Form der US-Serie des letzten Jahres denken, sondern, wie ich vor zwölf Monaten in die Saison gestolpert bin: mit Niederlagen. Vier in Folge. Nun waren es zwei Siege. Eine ordentliche Bilanz!

Zwölf Asse halfen nicht zum Sieg über Rochus. Im Turnierverlauf gelangen mir 18 dieser Winnerschläge. Ich stocke auf 2000 Euro auf und wundere mich über manchen Eintrag hier im Gästebuch zu diesem Thema.

Ach ja. In Sydney werden keine Asse hinzukommen können. Die dreieinhalb Stunden auf dem Acker haben mich doch etwas mitgenommen. Rücken und Handgelenk schmerzen. Ich werde eine Turnierpause einlegen, trainieren und mich ordentlich auf Melbourne vorbereiten.

Out in quarterfinals. Anger. Match point blown in the 2nd set...

No, I want to deny that. It was a good start after long injury. I have beaten two good players and I had bad luck in the third match - and all that after a long injury break.

I'm not stable yet, I can't consisently play yet on the niveau I had before my injury. I have to deal with that, even though it's a tough pill to swallow because I'm very ambitious. I may not think of the form of the US Open Series of last year, I have to remember how I started 12 months ago: with losses. Four in a row. Now it have been two wins. This record is okay.

Twelve aces have not been enough for a victory over Rochus. I hit 18 aces in this tournament. I will round up to 2000 Euro and I'm surprised about some entries in my guestbook concerning this topic.

In Sydney no more aces will follow. The three and a half hours on the court have been a little bit too much for me. My back and wrist are hurting. I will take a litte tournament break, I will practise and do a proper preparation for Melbourne.

I'm just happy that Kiwi is doing something for the victims. Tennis athletes as a whole is at least donating. Most tennis players don't rack up the millions like most athletes and those are the ones I haven't heard them donating a cent.

For example, Michael Vick quarterback for the Falcons just signed a $130 million deal plus $37 million in bonuses. That is who I would be angry at is players like that who haven't donated a cent. I apologize if he has donated, but just using him as an example.

No, it's not the English ones, he was relating to a few entries in German.

Well, that's just kind of pathetic that people are writing that to him. He immediately called Paradorn and offered to do an exhibition event to raise money. He could have just sat down and written a check but by giving from every match he is keeping the subject out there for a month and getting tennis fans involved. What mean, short-sighted people they must be to criticize him for that.

10.01.2005 : T-Time mit Andre
Es ist für mich immer wieder ein besonderes Gefühl, nach Melbourne zu kommen. Seit Samstag bin ich in der Stadt, die Ausrichter meines Lieblings-Grand Slams ist. Es ist eine schöne Stadt, die ich über das Wochenende genossen habe. Denn zwei Tage habe ich Tennispause gemacht.

In der Stadt herrscht bereits dieses besondere Grand Slam-Feeling. Zumindest scheine ich es zu spüren. Es herrscht eine tolle Atmosphäre. Die Leute sind entspannt. Ich habe die zwei Tage genossen, Massagen genommen und bin ein wenig locker gelaufen. Jetzt aber ist wieder Tennis-Time. Heute habe ich erst mit meinem Coach trainiert und am Nachmittag mit Andre Agassi. Das wird mehr als nur Training. Wir haben geplaudert, Neuigkeiten ausgetauscht und diskutiert über Gott und die Welt.

Es wird warm in Melbourne. Morgen soll sogar die 40 Grad Grenze fallen. Egal, die Arbeit macht Spaß. Ich fiebere auf den Freitag hin, wenn die Auslosung stattfindet. Und dann auf den Turnierbeginn. Die körperlichen Probleme von Adelaide sind überwunden. Ich bin bereit für das erste Grand Slam-Turnier.

Coming to Melbourne is always a special feeling for me. I'm here in the city of my favourite Grand Slam since Saturday. It's a beautiful city which I enjoyed over the week-end. I've taken a break from tennis for two days.

You can already feel the special Grand Slam feeling. There is a great atmosphere. The people are relaxed. I've enjoyed the last two days, took some massages and went for some easy runs. But now is again tennis time. Today I first practised with my coach and in the afternoon with Andre Agassi. That was more than just practise. We chatted and exchanged all kind of news.

It's going to be warm in Melbourne. Tomorrow, 40 degrees celsius should be reached. I don't mind, the work is fun. I'm already waiting for Friday when the draw is going to take place. And then the tournament starts. The physical problems of Adelaide are overcome. I'm ready for the first Grand Slam tournament.

Very sweet of him offer that guy tickets. Not the first time I've heard of him doing that. I have never been the receiving end of getting tickets but have gotten free drinks from Nicolas ;)

Forgot to add, why did that guy need the free tickets? If he was working the tournament driving carts, the tournament usually gives volunteers free tickets. Maybe they do things different in Australia.

No, I know it's not the first time he did it. This isn't exactly something I want to broadcast but in short, if it wasn't for Nicolas....I wouldn't have seen his QF, SF, and Final in Los Angeles. I just don't want people to start hitting him up for tickets. I never asked for mine and never expected to get a ticket to the QF. Let alone the other two.

and let's not forget that it could be something completely else... if you watch the URL enclosed to the entry you see that it leads to a sort of caring organization. So the tickets might have been not for the driver, but for some of the kids that they can watch tennis.

11.01.2005: Gegner heißt Virus
Ich habe mich schon in Adelaide gefragt, was mit mir los ist. Nun weiß ich es: mein aktueller Gegner heißt Virus, gegen den kein Topspin und kein Slice hilft, sondern eher Ruhe und Erholung.

Weiß nicht, wo ich mir das verdammte Ding eingefangen habe. Weiß nur, dass ich seit letzten Freitag brutal platt bin. Die Trainingseinheit mit Andre war vielleicht der entscheidende Rückschlag, weil ich zu viel gemacht habe. Jetzt muß ich viel schlafen und versuchen schnell auf die Beine zu kommen.

11.01.2005: Virus is my opponent
After Adelaide, I already wondered what's going on with me. Now I know it: my current opponent is a virus against which no topsin or slice is a solution, but rest and recovery.

I don't have a clue where I caught this damn thing. But I know that I'm feeling brutally flat since last Friday. The practise session with Andre was maybe the deciding set-back, because I was doing too much. Now I have to sleep a lot in order to get fit again quickly.

And just when I put in his guestbook that it sounded like he was relaxed & I was happy to hear that. He was probably so pumped to be hitting some in Melbourne that he didn't listen to his body and over did it. :sad:

It's unbelievable, he just can't get rid of the viruses :sad:
Last time ge caught one it was when coming back from Thailand but he did well in St. Anton. Hopefully can he can handle it again well and maybe gets some medical support to get rid of it as soon as possible (but please take care what they give you unless you don't want to end up like Stefan Koubek :sad: ).
It really sucks if you have something in your body, even if it's just a sore throat, cough. And even more if you feel tired and flat all the day when you want to prepare for a Grand Slam.

Wow, what a bummer for Nic, but hopefully he can recover within 48 hours. As for the tickets/driver issue. I've been given tickets by players that I've driven for the tournaments that I'm working at and it happens for a variety of reasons. Yes, the tournament gives volunteers some tickets, but there is usually a maximum and they are usually lousy seats. I've also been given tickets that allowed me to stay an extra day when I wasn't planning to. Players get hit up for tickets from strangers all the time and they can usually get out of it if they don't want to do it. I'm sure Nic will be fine regardless of what is in his guestbook.

So etwas habe ich im Leben nie gesehen und wünsche es meinem ärgsten Feind nicht. Wenn man manchmal so salopp daher sagt, man habe Angst um sein Leben, so war bei mir am Freitag diese Angst ganz reell!

Ich war auf dem Weg vom Vormittag Training zurück ins Hotel, als auf einmal fünf oder sechs Polizeiwagen entgegengerast kammen. Ich dachte mir nichts, stieg am Hotel aus und: auf einmal fallen Schüsse. Immer wieder peitschte ein Schuß durch die Luft. Ich wurde völlig panisch. Innerhalb weniger Sekunden war alles abgesperrt und ich konnte nicht mehr weg: weder weg mit dem Auto, noch rein ins Hotel. Nichts ging mehr.

Hunderte Menschen hetzten aus der Tiefgarage, von wo aus weitere Schüsse zu hören waren. Auf einmal kam der Wahnsinnige mit Pistole auch die Auffahrt hoch gelaufen und ich habe Schweißausbrüche bekommen. Der Typ stand zehn Meter von mir entfernt, in der rechten Hand die Knarre. Ich dachte: jetzt ist alles vorbei, der pustet dich weg. Ich hatte Angst pur!

Es war wie im Film, nur leider brutale Realität. Ich wurde von Polizisten auf mein Hotelzimmer begleitet, wo ich noch lange gezittert habe. Ich glaube, künftig schaue ich hinter jeden Baum. Völlig irre!

Ach ja, bin ja zum Tennisspielen in der Stadt. In der ersten Runde wartet der Belgier Rochus, gegen denn ich in Adelaide unterlag. So bietet sich mir schnell die Chance zur Revanche. Ich fühle mich langsam auch besser, auch wenn ich auf dem Platz noch immer die 4-monatige Pause merke. Ich hoffe es geht alles gut.

Jetzt aber danke ich erst einmal meinem Schutzengel!

I've never encountered something like that before and I wouldn't wish that my worst enemy. Sometimes you're joking "my life is in danger", but on Friday it was reality for me!

I was on my way from the morning practice back to the hotel and there have been five or six police cars coming up. I didn't mind and disembarked at the hotel and suddenly there were shots. Again and again. I paniced. Within a few seconds everything was locked up and I couldn't escape: neither by car nor going into the hotel. Nothing was possible.

Hundreds of people came out of the underground parking from where you could hear more shots. Then suddenly this crazy person with the gun came running up the drive from the underground parking and I was sweating. He was about 10 meters away, the gun in the right hand. I thought: now it's all over, he will shoot you. I was in pure agony!

It was like a movie, but unfortunately it was brutal reality. I was escorted to my hotel room by some police officers, I was still trembling for long time after that. (...)

Not to forget that I'm here for playing tennis in the city. For the 1st round I've drawn the Belgian Rochus who defeated me in Adelaide. So I'll get a fast chance for a revenge. I'm feeling slowly better, even though I'm still feeling the four months injury break. I hope everything goes well.

17.01.2005: Auftakt-Niederlage kein Rückschlag
Wie im Vorjahr war gleich wieder Endstation. Gegen Olivier Rochus, der mich auch in Adelaide bezwang, hatte ich viele Chancen, so zum Beispiel im ersten Satz ein 5:2, das aber aus den Händen verloren. Ich hatte riesige Probleme, mich über lange Strecken zu konzentrieren. Es war einfach zu viel, was die letzten Tage über mich hereingebrochen war. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass mich das so lange beschäftigt.

Gegen Ende des Spiels habe ich zwar nochmals aufgedreht, aber es hat nicht gereicht. Es waren einfach zu viele Ups and Downs in meinem Spiel. Das hatte ich ja schon im Training gemerkt. Ich muß das Positive sehen: teilweise habe ich richtig gutes Tennis gespielt, mein Spiel gemacht, dieses aber eben nicht konstant genug. Aber ich bin sicher, dass das mit der Zeit und harter Arbeit wieder kommt.

Ich muß mich erinnern, was noch im August war, wie lange ich nicht gespielt habe, und Realist bleiben. Die Saison ist lange und auch diese Herausforderung nehme ich an. Dies ist eine Niederlage. Auf meinem Weg aber kein Rückschlag!

17.01.2005: First round loss is no setback
Like the previous year, I already reached my final destination in the 1st round. I had lots of chances against Olivier Rochus who already defeated me in Adelaide; for example in the first set when I was leading 5:2, but I gave this lead out of my hands again. I had enormous problems keeping up my concentration for longer stretches. It was simply too much what all has happened during the last days. I would have never thought that it could affect me such a long time.

Despite a surge towards the end of the match, it wasn't enough. There have been too many ups and downs in my game. I already noticed that in practise before. I have to see the positive: partially I played really good tennis, I played my game, but it wasn't consistent enough. But I'm sure that I can solve this with time and hard work.

I have to remember what was in August, how long I didn't play and I have to stay realistic. The season is long and I will accept this challenge. This was one loss. But it's not a setback on my way.

Kiwi was seen at an icehockey match of the Hannover Scorpions yesterday
On Sunday evening, Kiwi will be playing a fundraising soccer tournament.

So he's really very active at the moment, I hope he doesn't get injured when playing soccer then... :eek: :banghead:

30.01.2005 : 10 Years after: Kiwi morgen in Wolfsburg
Es war 1995: in der zweiten Runde des ATP-Challengers von Wolfsburg spielt Nicolas Kiefer gegen den Dänen Frederik Fetterlein, der eine Woche zuvor den großen Stefan Edberg bezwungen hatte. Kiwi verliert und ist dennoch zufrieden, weil er auf der "Tour" angekommen ist.

Anläßlich des zehnjährigen Jubiläums kommt Kiwi am morgigen Montag (19 Uhr) wieder in den Tennisclub Grüngold in die Wolfsburger Röntgenstrasse, um im Rahmen des Challengers ein Exhibition gegen einen noch zu ermittelnden Spieler des Vereins auszutragen.

Karten für das Turnier, die dann auch für die Abendveranstaltung gelten, sind für 8 Euro zu erwerben. Kiwi zur Aktion: "Ich brauche Matchpraxis und habe immer noch gute Kontakte zu Grüngold Wolfsburg."
30.1.2005: 10 years after: Kiwi in Wolfsburg tomorrow
It was in 1995: in the 2nd round of the ATP Chellenger in Wolfsburg Kiwi was playing against the Dane Frederik Fetterlein who has beaten one week ago the big Stefan Edberg. Kiwi lost but was nevertheless content because he arrived on the "Tour" now.

Due to this 10 year anniversary, Kiwi is coming tomorrow, on Monday, 7pm, back to the tennis club Grüngold in Wolfsburg to play an exhibition match tournament against a yet unknown player of the club.

Tickets which will be valid for the whole evening session are available for 8 Euro. Kiwi: "I need match practise and I'm still holding good contacts to Grüngold Wolfsburg."

I posted this in Rainer's thread because they said that Dirk Hordorff would be a guest there... and you could have listend to it online via a Real Player stream.

Spoke to them (press guys in Wolfsburg) this morning and they told me the guy I needed to speak to was busy but he’d call me back. Not heard anything yet but I’ll let you know.

Den Zuschauern, die sehr zahlreich erschienen waren, scheint es auch gefallen zu haben. Die Atmosphäre jedenfalls hat gestimmt.

Aber das hatte ich auch nie in Zweifel gezogen. Immerhin kenne ich den Klub seit meiner Jugendzeit, in der ich hier viele Turniere gespielt habe. Jetzt aber war es eine Einheit auf dem Weg zurück in die Tour-Szene. Am Freitag fliege ich nach Marseille. Die Woche drauf spiele ich in Rotterdam, dann in Dubai und dann schon ist Daviscup in Südafrika.

Meine Turnierplanung habe ich in diesem Jahr auch unter okonomischen Gesichtspunkten vorgenommen. War ich vor einem Jahr zu der Zeit in den USA, so nutze ich nun die europäischen Turnierangebote, um auch ein paar Flugstunden einzusparen, die unnötige Kraft kosten, welche mir dann am Jahresende fehlen könnte.

Marseille habe ich noch nie gespielt. Rotterdam ist hoch besetzt und somit ein richtiger Gradmesser, wo ich stehe. Und in Dubai habe ich immerhin 2000 den Turniersieg gefeiert.

Ich hoffe, ich werde wieder Anlaß zum Feiern bekommen.

It was a nice event yesterday evening at Grün Gold Wolfsburg. Together with Lars Burgsmüller I've done an "aggravated practice session", which was very fun for myself. And it seemed as if the many spectators who have been there were also pleased. The atmosphere was great.

But I never thought it was going to be otherwise. After all, I know this club since my junior time where I played lots of tournaments there. But now it was a practise unit on my way back to the Tour. I'll go by plane to Marseille on Friday. The week after, I'm playing in Rotterdam and then in Dubai and then the Davis Cup in South Africa already arrived.

My tournament schedule was also considering economic factors. While I was in the USA one year ago, I'm going to play the European Tournaments this year to save a few flying hours which always take away a bit energy that I could miss at the end of the year.

I never played Marseille so far. Rotterdam is a very high quality tournament and therefore a good indicator of my current performance. And in Dubai I could celebrate the tournament win in 2000.

I hope I will again have a reason to celebrate.

08.02.2005 : Die Krümmel-, statt die Kuchentaktik
Ganz ehrlich: das hatte ich nicht erwartet. Da hatte ich geglaubt, in einer besseren Verfassung zu sein. Aber immer wieder erhält man als Rekonvaleszent den Knüppel vor den Kopf, wenn man zu schnell wieder glaubt, die alte Fitness erreicht zu haben. 3:6, 2:6 gegen Karol Beck. Raus in Marseille.

Es geht ja nicht nur um die Physis. Ein erfolgreiches Tennisspiel setzt sich aus so vielen Nuancen zusammen. Und da fehlen mir zur Zeit einfach zu viele. Ich habe es ja schon in Melbourne festgestellt: Es wird ein hartes Stück Arbeit, bis ich wieder da bin, wo ich im Herbst herausgerissen wurde. Aber das ist eine Herausforderung, der ich mich stelle.

Ich muß mich wieder darauf besinnen, mit Kleinigkeiten zufrieden zu sein. Step by Step: nicht gleich erfolgshungrig auf das größte Stück des Kuchens stürzen. Viele Krümmel können ja auch satt machen...

Ich komme wieder. Aber ich muß Geduld haben. Am Freitag geht es weiter nach Rotterdam.

Honestly: I never awaited this. I thought that I'm in better shape now. But always if you think too quickly that you are back to your old fitness you get knocked back down to earth. 3:6 2:6 against Karol Beck, out in Marseille 1st round.

And it's not only the physical part. Successful tennis game consists of many little factors, and currently, I'm missing too many. I already noticed that in Melbourne. It's going to be a hard piece of work to get back there where I was torn out in autumn. That's a challenge I am willing to take.

I must find back to be content with little things first. Step by step: not immediately the biggest piece of the cake. Lots of small crumbs will also do it...

I'm coming back. I must have patience. I'm heading to Rotterdam on Friday.

14.02.2005 : Wird Henman wieder zum Wendepunkt?
Den Tag werde ich nie vergessen. US Open 2004, Achtelfinale. Mein Spiel gegen Tim Henman. Ich bin heute noch davon überzeugt, dass ich das Spiel gewonnen hätte. Aber bei 2:2 Sätzen und 0:3 im Fünften mußte ich wegen einer schweren Armverletzung aufgeben. Es war das jähe Ende meines Traums vom Masters. Ich war auf einem sehr guten Weg.

Was folgte, war eine lange Pause, dann harte Reha mit Eiskammer und vielen anderen Folteraktionen mehr. Seit Ende letzten Jahres spiele ich zwar wieder, habe aber bis heute noch nicht wieder meinen Rhythmus gefunden. Es fehlen Nuancen, die aber im Spitzensport schon entscheidend sind.

Morgen sehe ich Tim wieder. Wir stehen uns zum zehnten Mal gegenüber. Sechs Mal hat er bislang gewonnen. Jede Niederlage tut weh. Aber die letzte war besonders schmerzhaft. Vielleicht gelingt mir gegen ihn wieder die Wende zum Guten...

14.02.2005: Is Henman going to be the turning point again?
I will never forget this day. US Open 2004, round of last 16. My match against Tim Henman. I'm still convinced today that I would have won this match. But at 2 sets all, and down 0:3 in the fifth set I had to retire because of my wrist injury. It was a horrible ending for my dream about the Masters Cup. I was on a very good way.

A long break with tough rehab and lots of other tortures followed. Since the end of last year I'm playing again but I didn't find yet my rhythm until today. Only little details are missing, but that's already deciding in pro sports.

Tomorrow I'm going to see Tim again. We will play the 10th match against each other. He won six times so far. Every defeat is painful, but especially the last one. Maybe I can get get the turning point to good times against him...

5:7, 4:6: nach dem ersten Spiel war für Nicolas Kiefer das Turnier in Rotterdam beendet. Tim Henman erwies sich im zehnten Duell zum siebten Mal als zu stark, ließ nicht ein Break zu. Während Kiwi schlechte Erinnerungen an das letzte Aufeinandertreffen hat, als er im fünften Satz des Achtelfinals der US Open wegen seiner Armverletzung aufgeben mußte, wurde ihm dieses Mal durchweg eine gute Leistung bestätigt. Am Ende aber stand erneut eine Erstrunden-Niederlage und das Ende von Rotterdam. In der kommenden Woche schlägt Kiwi in Dubai auf.
15.02.2005: Sporting loss
5:7, 4:6: After the first match the tournament in Rotter for Nicolas Kiefer was over. Tim Henman proved to be too strong for the 7th time in ten meetings, he didn't allow a single break. Whereas Kiwi still has bad memories about the last match of the US Open where he had to retire because of his arm injury, this time he was confirmed a good performance. But at the end, there was another first round loss and the end in Rotterdam. Next week, Kiwi is serving in Dubai.

Gestern Abend bei der ARD: Da berichtet "Report aus München" über einen angeblichen Wettskandal im Tennis. Ein Zeuge wird "vernommen". Sorry, ich finde das langsam alles übertrieben. Ich weiß nichts davon, sollte eigentlich auch interviewt werden, habe das aber abgelehnt. Nicht, weil ich dazu nichts sagen will, sondern, weil ich dazu nichts sagen kann.

Ich wette auch, okay, aber nur im Fußball. Ich hoffe, das reicht als Statement für alle Sensations-Gierigen, die nach dem TV-Bericht gestern nun eine neue Schlagzeile wittern. Von mir nicht.

Yesterday evening on ARD: "Report aus München" was reporting about an alleged tennis betting scandal. A witness was being heard. Sorry, but I think that is all exaggerated now. I should be also interviewed, but I don't know anything about that and therefore I rejected the interview. Not because I didn't want to say anything, but because I don't have anything to set about that.

I'm also betting, okay, but only on soccer. I hope that's enough for all the ones craving for sensations who are looking for new headlines after this report yesterday. But not from me.

Schwarze Schafe im weißen Sport -Manipulationsvorwürfe im TennisAutoren : Mike Lingenfelser und Nick Golüke

Ein Sport, der Helden hervorgebracht hat. Ehrliche Einzelkämpfer, hart erarbeitete Erfolge – eine saubere Sache. Doch auch der „weiße Sport“ hat schwarze Schafe. Nach Fußball steht jetzt Tennis im Verdacht. Nach den Recherchen von report München sollen auch hier Spiele verschoben werden. Wir treffen uns mit einem internationalen Spitzenspieler. Er besteht darauf, unerkannt zu bleiben. Sogar Morddrohungen hat es in der Wettszene schon gegeben. Unser Kronzeuge tut das, was nicht sein darf. Er wettet auf die eigene Niederlage. Er erzählt:

„Man geht ins Internet, sieht seinen Namen, was ja oft genug vorkommt. Du weißt, du kannst nicht 100prozentig spielen oder du hast einen Termin in den nächsten Tagen wo anders, und dann überlegst du dir das ganz genau, ob es sich lohnen würde. Und wenn es sich lohnt, dann machst du es einfach, nimmst das Geld mit. Und wenn es sich nicht lohnen würde, dann probierst du, zu spielen.“

Schieben und Tricksen – sogar in Absprache mit dem Gegner. Der Tennisprofi sagt hierzu:

„Es ist konkret abgelaufen, dass ich verletzt gewesen bin, auf dem Turnier gesagt habe, dass ich nicht durchspielen kann, mich dann mit meinem Gegner zusammengesetzt habe, gesagt habe, wie das Match ausgeht vom Satzverlauf her, er ein paar Freunde angerufen hat, ich ein paar Freunde angerufen habe und wir dann auf eine Drei-Satz-Niederlage gesetzt haben. (...) Der Wettgewinn war zwischen fünf und sechstausend Euro.“

report München ist auf einem großen Turnier in Rotterdam – die meisten Spieler wollen sich vor der Kamera nicht äußern. Nur die deutsche Tennis-Nachwuchshoffnung Björn Phau (PLatz 112 der Weltrangliste) hilft uns bei der Recherche. Manipulationen kann er nicht bestätigen, Gerüchte hat er aber auch schon gehört. Denn gerade in der Einzelsportart Tennis, scheint das Tricksen technisch leicht zu sein. Er erklärt:

„Tennis ist halt ein Sport, bei dem es um Nuancen geht. Und wenn man den Ball ein wenig zu weit hinten trifft, macht man halt einen Fehler. Gut, das passiert halt. Man macht halt sehr viele leichte Fehler. Tennis lebt halt davon, wer die meisten unforced errors macht, der verliert. Und wenn man da halt ein paar mehr einstreuen kann, dann verliert man auch.“

Es sind eher die kleinen Turniere, abseits der Medienöffentlichkeit, auf denen solche Tricks angewendet werden können. Bei Top-Veranstaltungen wie in Rotterdam ist der Betrug dagegen unwahrscheinlich: Das Preisgeld ist hier hoch, es geht um viele Weltranglistenpunkte. Der Profizocker Christian Plenz verdient seinen Lebensunterhalt damit, acht Stunden am Tag auf Tennisspieler zu setzten, mit Hilfe von Statistikprogrammen. Ihm fällt sofort auf, wenn auf dem Wettmarkt Unregelmäßigkeiten auftauchen: etwa dadurch dass plötzlich hohe Summen auf einen Außenseiter gesetzt werden. Wettprofi Christian Plenz sagt:

„Lyon 2003 Kafelnikow gegen Vicente ist das krasseste Beispiel. Da ist der Kurs am Wettmarkt für Vicente so stark eingebrochen, dass er vom Außenseiter zum klaren Favoriten mutiert ist am Wettmarkt. Und die Entwicklung verstärkt wurde, wahrscheinlich auch von Leuten, die versucht haben, auf diesen Zug aufzuspringen; dass die eben gedacht haben, dass was manipuliert ist.“

Superstar Kafelnikow verlor tatsächlich das Spiel gegen den zuvor lange sieglosen Spanier Vicente. Der Verband der Tennisprofis ATP startet damals eine Untersuchung gegen Kafelnikow. Doch es konnten ihm keinerlei Verstrickungen in die Wettszene nachgewiesen werden. War alles nur ein böses Gerücht, weil der Russe nicht nur auf dem Tennisplatz ein „Spieler“ war?
Wie ernst die ATP die Gefahr von Wettmanipulationen nimmt, zeigt ihr drastischer Strafkatalog: Weder ein Spieler noch eine Person aus seinem Umfeld darf auf Tennis wetten. 100.000 Dollar Strafe für Spieler plus lebenslange Sperre drohen. Die ATP arbeitet dabei mit Ermittlungsbehörden und Wettbüros zusammen. Horst Klosterkemper von ATP Europa erzählt:

„Ich habe vom Cricket gehört, das weiß kein Mensch, was da für Wetten abgeschlossen werden. Und da kommen natürlich jetzt auch Wettfirmen ins Tennis rein, die hier auch ihr Geschäft suchen. Deshalb: Wenn wir sehen, dass das ein zunehmender Markt ist, muss man die Regeln umso strikter machen, damit es eben nicht irgendwann zu einem Fall kommt.“

Offiziell wurde noch nie ein Spieler von der ATP überführt. Wir gehen weiter auf Spurensuche und fragen nach, beim langjährigen Davis-Cup-Kapitän Niki Pilic:

„Ja, ich denke, dass sicher ist, dass ein paar Funktionäre den Job schnell wechseln, weil wahrscheinlich haben die ein paar Informationen gehabt, die sie nicht gesagt haben. Und was ich gehört habe, sind ein paar Funktionäre weg von der ATP. Es wurde nicht gesagt für was und warum, aber sie sind nicht mehr da.“

Frage report München: „Aufgrund von Manipulationsgeschichten?“

Antwort Niki Pilic: „Ja.“

ATP-Europachef Klosterkemper kann diese Behauptung nicht bestätigen. Betrügern im Tennis auf die Schliche zu kommen, ist äußerst schwierig. Das bestätigt auch unser Tennisprofi:

„Das wickelt man so ab, dass man eben zwei Freunde zuhause hat, denen man in dem Punkt vollstens vertraut. Ich kenne ja auch den Wetteinsatz, den sie machen, ich habe auch Zugriff auf ihre Wettkonten. Von daher weiß ich immer, wie viel Geld im Spiel ist. Und ich glaube, dass von meinen Freunden, die dadurch ja auch Geld verdienen, mich niemand übers Ohr hauen würde, weil sie sonst Geld verlieren würden.“

Auch die Mittelsmänner sind schwer zu greifen. Denn viele Wetten werden in der Grauzone illegaler Wettbüros abgeschlossen. Und im Kampf gegen sie, ist der Staat überfordert. Das belegt ein vertraulicher Bericht vom Landeskriminalamt Bayern, der report München vorliegt. Darin bemerken die Ermittler ernüchtert:

„dass die Problematik trotz zahlreicher Ermittlungsverfahren nach wie vor besteht und lediglich auf hohem Niveau stagniert. Die Glückspielszene scheint durch die bisherigen Maßnahmen nicht beeinträchtigt zu werden.“

Was bleibt, ist nur noch der Appell an die Moral. Patrick Kühnen, Deutscher Daviscup-Kapitän, sieht diesen darin:

„Den Spielern gewisse Werte auch zu vermitteln. Und im Zuge einer Entwicklung eines junges Spielers eben Dinge mit auf den Weg zu geben, dass Tennis eben auch ein sehr traditioneller Sport ist, gewisse Werte auch dazugehören, wie eben Fairplay und Respekt gegenüber dem Gegner. Das ist, glaube ich, die Aufgabe eines Trainers.“

Der unbekannt bleibende Tennisprofi sagt:

„Von der Moral her ist es vielleicht verwerflich, aber ich meine, das gibt’s in jedem Bereich, gibt es eine Art, wie man am einfachsten Geld verdienen kann. Und ich glaube, jeder gute Geschäftsmann macht das: Umso mehr Geld er verdienen kann, umso mehr nimmt er mit.“

22.02.2005: SIEG! Kiwi bezwingt Safin
Jaa... 7:6, 6:4. SIEG! Das war wichtig. Ich hatte mich in den vergangenen Wochen Stück für Stück verbessert, hatte mich immer besser gefühlt. Nur in Ergebnis hatte es sich nicht ausgedrückt. Dafür nun in Dubai. Ein Sieg gegen Marat Safin hat Bedeutung. Es war ein harter Kampf und ein großer Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Ich habe mutig agiert und der Mut ist belohnt worden. Das gibt Selbstvertrauen, zählt aber morgen schon nicht mehr. Dann heißt es: neuer Tag, neuer Fight. Ich bin bereit!

Yeees... 7:6 6:4. VICTORY!! That was important. I have improved step by step better during the last weeks, felt better and better. But the results didn't express that. But now in Dubai. A win over Marat Safin has a value. It was a hard fight and a big step going to the right direction. I played bravely and it got rewarded. That is giving confidence, but it doesn't mean anything tomorrow already. Then it is: a new day, a new fight. I am ready!

23.02.2005: Arbeitssieg - aber wichtig!
Gestern die Nummer 1, heute die Nummer 92 - da hatte ich Probleme, den Rhythmus zu finden. Ich stand falsch zum Ball, war unkonzentriert und habe schlecht reagiert. Immer wieder habe ich Hyung-Taik Lee ins Spiel verholfen. Sogar im 3. Satz hatte er ein Break vor. Doch dann habe ich mit harter Arbeit den Spieß noch umgedreht.

Morgen spiele ich nun Doppel, leider nicht mit Rainer Schüttler - was im Hinblick auf den Daviscup sicherlich nicht schlecht gewesen wäre. So gehe ich mit dem Tschechen Tomas Berdych auf den Acker und im Einzel wartet am Freitag im Viertelfinale dann der Spanier Tommy Robredo. Ich verspreche, dass ich wie ein Stier kämpfen werde...

23.02.2005: Working win - but important!
Yesterday the #1, today #92 - I had problems to find my rhythm. I didn't move well to the balls, I was unconcentrated and I reacted badly. Again and again I helped Hyung-Taik Lee into the match. Even in the third set he was break ahead. But I could turn it around with hard work.

Tomorrow I will play doulbes, unfortunately not with Rainer Schüttler - what wouldn't have been bad at all considering the upcoming Davis Cup. So I'm going with the Czech Tomas Berdych on the court and in singles the Spaniard Tommy Robredo is waiting on Friday. I promise to fight like a bull...

Hey everyone!
Haven't been here in a while, between my week spent in San Jose and the 'stuff' I'm dealing with at work. Glad to see these posts from Nic in the last few weeks and very encouraged by his wins this week. I am very anxious to see him in Indian Wells, and hope that I have the time to pull him aside and have a decent conversation. For some reason, I feel the urge to hug him about 8 times and say, 'okay this hug is for your injury, and this hug is for....' and so on. I'll let you know what happens. :D

25.02.2005 : Enttäuscht trotz ''guter Woche''
Im Viertelfinale von Dubai war für Kiwi Schluss: 4:6, 4:6 gegen Tommy Robredo und im ersten Moment war die Enttäuschung groß. Diese aber wurde schnell verdrängt von Zuversicht: "Ich hatte eine gute Woche und die Nummer 1 geschlagen. Endlich habe ich wieder mutig agiert. So muß ich weitermachen und darf mich nicht zurücklehnen. Ich habe vielleicht 50 Prozent meines Leistungspotentials erreicht. Aber ich will mehr. Ich will oben angreifen. Auf dem Weg dorthin ist mir in Dubai ein großer Schritt gelungen."
25.02.2005: Disappointed despite "good week"
In the quarterfinal of Dubai was final destination for Kiwi: He lost 4:6 4:6 against Tommy Robredo and in the first moment the disappointment was big. But soon it was replaced by optimisim: "I had a good week and have beaten the #1. Finally I played bravely again. I have to continue like that, I mustn't lay back now. Maybe I reached 50 percent of my potential. But I want more. I want to conquer the top. And I did a big step in Dubai."

I'm glad he is thinking positively. He did have a great week despite this loss. Keep it up Kiwi :yeah:

27.02.2005 : Daviscup-Zeit
Ist das eine geile Stadt. Dieser Eindruck setzte sich sofort fest, nachdem ich Johannesburg erreicht hatte. Da mir aber in diesen Tagen zum Sight Seeing nicht viel Zeit bleiben wird, ist jetzt schon klar, dass ich hierher nochmnals zurückkommen werden.

In Dubai war für mich nach dem Doppel-Halbfinale Schluß. Blöderweise bin ich im Spiel noch umgeknickt, doch darf mich das im Daviscup nicht behindern. Ich melde mich.

It's a def city. This impression was immediately present after I reached Johannesburg. As I won't have much time left for Sight Seeing these days, it's quite plain to me that I will come back there once again.

In lost the doubles semifinal in Dubai. Unfortunately I twisted my ankle in this match but this may not handicap me in Davis Cup. I'm coming back to you again.

Freitag um 15 Uhr geht das Daviscup-Match gegen Südafrika los. Ich gehe als Erster auf den Court, beginne gegen Wesley Moodie.
