Jim Courier’s Outback Champions Series has expanded outside the U.S., announcing an event in Greece that will be played by Greek-American Pete Sampras, and Greek-Aussie Mark Philippoussis.
Philippoussis will become the first active ATP player to compete in an event on the circuit for players 30 years and older.
Other players in the field will be tour founder Jim Courier, Todd Martin, Richard Krajicek, Mats Wilander and Pat Cash. The eighth and final player in the field will be announced at a later date.
The event will be May 17-20, following Sampras’ senior tour debut at the May event in Boston.
“Playing in this event in Greece is going to be very exciting for me and something that I am really looking forward to,” Sampras said. “I’ve never had the opportunity to travel to Greece, but this event will give me the chance to see the country, meet the people and allow me to play in a tournament with a different kind of pride as a Greek-American playing in the land of my heritage.”

For Philippoussis, who has struggled with injury, it will be an Outback Series debut.
“We are very proud of the quality of tennis and the competitive nature on the Outback Champions Series and now with a current ATP player like Mark Philippoussis playing in Athens, the bar will be further raised as we go international,” Courier said. “With golfers like Fred Funk and Craig Stadler
competing on both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour in golf, it will be interesting to see Mark Philippoussis do the same in tennis on the ATP Tour and Champions Series circuits. This is going to be a fascinating event on a lot of levels.”

I bet these guys (and their wives) were sick of all the boring places Courier picked for the Champions Series and threatened to withdraw unless more exotic destinations were added to the schedule . Mid May is not a bad time for a vacation in Greece ;)

I am not sure though that many people in Greece know who Sampras and Philippoussis are  In any case it's nice they decided to do it. The ironic thing is my best chance to see them play is to go to the Boston event .

Of course! Every public building in Greece is required to have Sampras' portrait across from the main entrance doors, like in old times when they used to have a portrait of the king. Additionally, February 30th has been declared a national holiday in his honor and the city if Athens is already preparing a 'Head of State'-type welcoming reception. :silly:

According to the athens website, Emilio Sanchez(who?) is the last player.

GROUP A
Sampras
Courier
Cash
Sanchez

GROUP B
Philippoussis
Krajicek
Martin
Wilander

Shame Mark wont play Cash.. I'm sure he would've thrown in a couple good body serves!
