He's only serve my ass. He broke more times than Blake did yesterday.

He is dangerous on clay. He can't beat the best players on clay, but I can see him winning Palermo or some other red clay MM tournament!

Great week for him! HIT THAT HATERS!!!

The Doctor is in the house! Just a pity it didn't come on red clay, that would have been even better. But still, beating Haas, Montanes and Zabaleta on a slow surface is quite an achievement, and just look at the breakpoint conversion - 3/8, in only two sets.

With finals on grass, indoor hard and clay, Karlo could be one of the more consistent all-surface performers in tennis today....

Hmm, that could have been a tricky one.... but if he can win 6-1 and 6-2 sets off Montanes and Zabaleta, no reason why he couldn't have done the same against another Hispanic player. LOL, the great irony is that Benjamin "only serve" Becker (Bilbo's words earlier in the week) was the only man to break him in the whole tournament.

You still have to get the returns in play to allow someone to self-destruct ("Give him a chance to choke!" was what Connors famously yelled out during a match with Agassi at the US Open some years back), and Karlovic can obviously do that much better on clay than on faster surfaces, which is why this title perhaps isn't as big a surprise as it seems.

The two matches were nearly mirror images of each otherZabaleta didn't seem able to cope with Ivo's slice low to his forehand - whether that was because he'd mentally checked out of the match I'm not sure. Yeah. This joke of a tennis player has done more in his tennis career than Ljubicic can ever dream of ;) .

I know this isn't at all relevant to this important issue you're debating, but they do have an interesting head-to-head. It's 2-2, they played twice on clay and twice on indoor carpet, and yet their two wins are split across both surfaces. Ljubicic beat Coria in straight sets in Rome in 2003, then Coria returned the favour later the same year in Basel - not exactly the way round you'd expect, but that's the beauty of tennis.

Following you logic of a 5-year-old child I'm gonna say he can. Coria is not making double faults every time he serves.

And he definetely can play tennis, even without a good serve (or a serve) he could win several matches last year. His problem is phycological and is reflected on his serve, but I think it might have also been reflected on his backhand for example.

I really actually enjoyed seeing someone like Ivo who could hit some wicked volleys, smash shots to piece and has a nasty slice. I am soooooooo damned sick of South American baseline game. Sooooooo boring and uncreative. I love seeing players who can totally deconstruct their games by using superior court positioning and huge serves. Much less monotonous.

I did feel bad for Mariano but he could not handle the pressure that Ivo put him under. Ivo, btw, was a total gentleman in his remarks.

Coria, btw, is a worthless little brat with terrible sportsmanship. I used to admire his game and his tenacity but then he became bitter, rude and could not hit a serve. Don't care for him at all now.

I would never have thought Ivo's first career title would be on clay.

Too bad for Mariano.

Yeh Coria can actually play tennis, not sure Karlovic even knows what that is.

I´m constantly surprised at how some people enjoy bashing Karlovic all the time. So the guy is not the most talented all-round player, so what? His serve is incredible, and that´s a big part of modern tennis. Give the man some credit for winning his first title! Every player has strenghts and weaknesses, Ivo´s strong shot is his serve, and he´s making the best of it! Comparing Karlovic and Coria is like saying ice cream is better than meatballs. Besides, I´m still waiting for Coria to actually show up in a tournament.

That's what I've been saying all the time... tennis is great because of all the diversity; I actually happen to like both nuclear tennis of Karlovic and smart baseline point construction of Coria (not today's Coria, but 2 years ago Coria). Why would anyone prefer if tennis was just 1-dimensional is beyond me. I like it PARTICULARLY because of so many different and opposing styles.
Just as you put it - it's similar to saying that you want to eat only ice-cream and nothing else, because ice-cream is your favourite thing to eat.

:woohoo:

Just love it, take that haters. Mickey Mouse for sure, but a title nonetheless. Karlovic surely deserved this.

Aw, bless. He is cute. He seemed so heart-broken when he lost in San Jose (not that I am complaining about that result of course)

Must be a bit of a bore having to write out two speeches before every final, one for if he wins and one for if he loses, ready for somebody else to read out!

Aren't there ways to treat that speech problem he's got? I just wonder. They can treat so many things today, is it possible they can't find a cure for that?
