What is Ivo's best surface?

It isn't clear that it's grass or some other fast surface. On grass, Ivo's serve is almost unbreakable, but his poor return game becomes even weaker - so it's tiebreaks all round. On clay, his serve is still easily good enough to avoid getting broken, but he has much better chances to break. The point is that his serve is lights out on pretty much any surface - so maybe his best chances come on the surface which makes it easiest for him to break serve?

it doesnt really matter what surface he plays on. As long as he gets his air-to-surface missiles into the court no one on this planet can touch him.

he will probably injure himself sometime next week so he wont be a threat until next year.....

Clay, he gets more returns in and it becomes a grind fest after that.

It's hard to imagine Ivo being very good at grind fests.

Well that grind fest worked today, he won 1 of the first 13 points played on Montanes' serve but was able to win in straight sets 7-6 6-2

A very, very, very thin carpet.

He's an all surface player. He's now reached the final of Queens(grass), San Jose(hard) and Houston(clay). ;)

I still think grass is his best. If the grass season were longer, he'd be ranked higher. Outdoor hard is his weakest surface.

Grass sounds like his best surface, but the last two years at wimbledon hes gone out in the first round. I think his result in 2004 against federer was his best ever result there.

It's a fair point. His serve is so good that he is probably willing to trade it off with getting a few better returns in like on the clay

A fast clay surface is the best for him i think. On faster surfaces he cant break anyone. His serve is very hard to return no matter if it is on clay or on grass, indoor ...:)

Clay might be easier on his dodgy knee.

It also gives him slightly more time to run around onto his forehand especially on returns where he can take a massive swipe.

I wish there were more clips. Servefests are boring but just watching someone with his height serving is fascinating - for a short time at least.

Grass because it gives him more opportunity to volley, and his volleys are quite decent.
On clay it is more effective to get into a baseline rally and his groundstrokes are one of the worst in the top 1000.
