Blake def. Monaco 7-6(5) 1-6 7-6(0)

Blake for the very first time (including Chalengers and Futures) won a three-setter with two winning tie-breaks! Monaco led 5:4 in the 1st tie-break and 2:0, 6:5 (30-15) in the third set -> 10 points in a row for James :bolt:

Tight first set, letdown from Blake in the 2nd, and tight third set as well. Basically, James just stepped up in the clutch. Not Blake's best performance, but a win is a win.

I didn't see the match but seemed like Monaco got nervous or something after the 15-30 on Blake's serve at 6-5*

Pity Juan couldn't pull the upset

Congrats to Blake!

I wonder when James finally wins a match after saving match point (was so close tonight) and a five-setter? Anyway, this tight victory should be very good for his confidence :)

For those who saw their match at the 2006 US Open it was clear that James would be challenged in this match. Pico came close but could not close the deal, James was better in the points that mattered.

Beating Blake on clay would be an upset? I thought it was slumping clay clown Blake who had the upset.

You have a point.

But yes, it would have been an upset. ;)

Juan is still very young. Most player's aren't like Rafa or Nole and play so well so young. He's got a long way to go, and I don't see him starting to hit his stride for another couple years.

I see on tenniscorner.net Monaco has poor tie-break record in career: 15-26. This match only confirmed his weakness in this departament.

Monaco simply tightened up, he was up 6-5*, 30-15 and lost the next 10 points. He is not by any means unique in this department, a similar thing happened to Sam against Haas and a much more spectacular thing happened to Roitman against RMK, just to site recent examples.

Hey I am a fan of Monaco, he is already 23, I just think he has too much talent too have never reached the top 50, he is currently at his highest ranking ever at 52 :) I do expect a great clay season from Pico. He just needs to imporve the mental aspect.

Yes, the key is the mentality. I was abroad when Pico won BsAs but I assume he has already "organized" his shots. Before, his game was very messy.
He always loses this kind of tight matches.

NicoFan

Sorry tennismaster - I must have lost track of him - I thought he was 21, 22.

A lot of the guys have trouble with the mental part of the game. Hopefully Juan can get it together. And some guys bloom late - look at Nico who really didn't move up until he was 23, 24.

I saw his victory in Sopot over Marc Lopez after saving two match points, and I must to say he played incredibly well at those match points. It was 3 years ago...

Thank God this is Houston's last year, this tournament has no credibility at all. Andy Roddick 3 time champion:o, Mardy Fish as defending champion and possibly James as its last winner.before spouting off, you could at least check your facts. Before it moved to Houston in 2001, it was in Orlando, on green clay; the tournament has existed since 1969. They brought it to houston and really dedicated themselves to try to make it a good event with the same red clay as RG, etc. They tried hard to get better players, they couldn't, so they didn't renew their contract, and next year it will move somewhere else.

Btw, before it moved to Houston (aka in its last year in Orlando), Gonzo won. :) Wilander, Lendl, Norman, Higueras, and other very good claycourt players were former champions.

I know it became considered by many here as a MM tourney in recent years because of the scheduling sandwiched between DC and Monte Carlo, but there's no need to make sweeping judgments about people and the tournament itself.
