Murray breaks the top-10!

Thanks to Haas losing to Karlovic, Andy Murray has broken the top 10.

If Murray wins his first match (second round) in Monte Carlo then he moves up to 9th and if he gets further than Lube in that tournament, he'll move up to 8th.

If.

We'll have to see what the draw does for him, how fit he is now with his groin problem and how positive he's feeling about the clay this year.

Excellent for Murray, wow that's been a pretty quick ride to the Top 10.

Boy, do I miss Escude today. He would have had a LOT to say and gloat about.

Top 10 has been a goal for Andy since he was "a little boy" according to his mum Judy - so I guess this has been quite an emotional moment for him.

No rest for the wicked, Andy - there's clay to conquer and a chance to get higher still.

Don't worry - there's room in there for both Djokovic and Murray.

A muted "Hooray!" is due.

Yes, an odd state of affairs for him to get into the top 10 on the back end of an absolute beating. I imagine he'll scrape together enough results to avoid falling out during the claycourt season. As for further ascendancy during that period, I don't have high hopes.

He doesn't have to get results to stay there. The entry system works on a 52 week rolling results calendar in which you defend the points you won a year ago each week. Murray didn't get any points in the clay season last year barring one victory at Hamburg and one at Barcelona.

Yes, I know, I followed his claycourt exploits last year with some anguish. I didn't express myself that well, though, so to expand: Haas' results on clay last year left a lot to be desired also, and as a former Rome finalist he has a chance to make a clay TMS quarterfinal or two and leapfrog Murray. The Scot is competent enough on the surface to stave off Haas' efforts to overtake him in the rankings, but the fact remains that these two could be neck-and-neck through Monte Carlo, Rome, Hamburg and RG.

That had slipped my mind. Odds are really stacked against Ljubicic, so Murray is more secure than I thought.

Murray in his first claycourt season last year was without a coach. We know he can play clay it used to be his best surface and two years in Spain won't have done any harm. This season I don't expect title but he will be much better than last year.

I know. The guy has played precisely one clay court season. He split with his coach right beforehand and was a bit lost tactically for several months. Couple that with the fact he had a virus before Monte Carlo that hurt his build-up then cramping on court against Lisnard (the last time we've seen that), he had lower back problems in Rome and Roland Garros.

Last year's clay season was a complete write-off. I don't expect him to rack up titles here either but I think those who are convinced the guy is useless on the dirt are wrong-headed. We'll know much more of what he can and can't do on clay by the middle of June.

Luckily there isn't long left to find out!

He's said before that clay was actually his best surface. While I don't think that's true myself, it means that he obviously is able to play on it.

Unfortunately this time last year before going into the clay season, he was having problems with Petch & they split up. So he went into it unprepared by himself & a little off his game. Not to mention he was carrying injuries to boot. This time last year he was having a lot of pressure placed upon him with the expectations of the hordes over here. That also accounted for a huge dip in his form.

However after getting together with BG, he's focused himself more. Of course, he's still come out cold a few times, self-destructed/choked or what have you since then, but the results have been a lot more steady.

Therefore while I don't think he'll probably be able to challenge for the titles, I feel he'll at least do himself a lot more justice in his clay matches this year & pickup more points than most people expect he will get.

MC against Nalbandian would be a good test of how far he's come over the past year!

Oooh he had one bad match. Whoop de doo.For the record, I actually believe he's a legitimate top 10 player, I just think elite players should not take that kind of beatdowns, let alone to players from their own generation.

Maybe now that he's a top 10 he'll quit moonalling :)

I happen to agree - but I also know that he was injured, in spite of him not wanting to talk about that. The main problem in that match, however, was his defeatist attitude - he knew he wasn't going to be able to win because he wasn't going to be able to move well enough and never really mentally knuckled down and tried to make things happen as a result. It was very disappointing. But it's done with now - hopefully he can stop falling over long enough to post some good results in April and May.
