Quackin' at home instead of Monte Carlo

Deboogle!.

Looks like Andy will have to wait another tournament to improve his European clay results - most likely Marat or Gonzo in the third round :haha:

Carito_90
04-17-2004, 04:43 PM
:haha: really?
what a baad draw! lol

but the same happened in indian wells... most likely marat in third round i think.. and he got through him.. but of course, it wasn't clay

So i dunno.. i'd cheer for andy.. but i think it's useless (dont wanna be mean lol)

Havok
04-17-2004, 04:47 PM
the idiot is playing MC? i actually hope he tanks his 1st round match, hes dumb to play this event, he's played way too many consecutive weeks, its going on 7 if he plays this:rolleyes: and bunk, he can beat Gonzo, he's got a win over him on clay:p

Carito_90
04-17-2004, 05:04 PM
I know, he shouldn't be playing... i dont want him injured! He still has lots of points to win in RG! lol

But anyways, i'm kinda glad he's playing.. they're gonna air MC on tv.. and i wanna watch andy play
I'm so happy, today they're gonna show andy's semifinal! god bless fox sports http://www.menstennisforums.com/images/smilies/notworthy.gif

yah, live!

I think i wont be able... i have to go to a friend's house.. it's her birthday.. i'll be able to watch it but not to post updates. Sorry guys :(
But i can give u my after-match report
although i think deb's one's gonna be better

Carito_90
04-17-2004, 05:12 PM
Oh i can give u the tommy haas match updates... they're showin it in almost half an hour

Havok
04-17-2004, 05:23 PM
well the Haas/Pavel updates should be posted in the Houston thread. anything is better than nothing, but actually since its being shown on tv (foxsports) i actually think livescore.com will be updating the scores now

Carito_90
04-17-2004, 05:27 PM
Oh btw, Chela and Safin are in the Estoril (not sure about the spell lol) final :)

Labatze (not sure about the spell again) retired after back spams (they played almost 15 minutes.. if not less)

zoltan83
04-17-2004, 09:33 PM
Why some of you say that Roddick shouldn't play at MC?

Havok
04-17-2004, 09:37 PM
zoltan, he's played IW, Miami, DC, and now Houston all back-to-back. that's already 6 weeks, and Deb has said he's very flat out there, so whats the point of lugging your ass all the way to Europe, be jet lagged and lose right away at Monte Carlo. He's gonna lose early because he needs some time off

zoltan83
04-17-2004, 09:49 PM
Zoltan looking the calendar http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/teufel/devil-smiley-048.gif  damn' you're right. He needs some rest now.
But I hadn't noticed that he is playing since 6 weeks. It's because my favorite WTA players don't play since a time now and thus I'm only watching Andy results. If he don't play, I don't follow result on ATP. So I he and my fav' WTA don't play, I don't watch the tennis. It isn't not exactly true but I don't follow at the same level. I mean I don't search any info about the tournament and some other stuff like that.
But he needs some rest but one of my friend goes to MC especialy for seeing Roddick. So Roddick : rest after MC. :D

04-17-2004, 10:13 PM
:D at the funny smilie.

Nooooooo he has to rest before Monte Carlo because he isn't going to want to rest in Europe...... unless he can go to your house, of course. ;)

zoltan83
04-17-2004, 10:16 PM
of course I can go to my house.:D
And moreover, my house (actually, mothers' house) is situated in a very nice place.

No one's sure that Andy's gonna do well after the clay season.
He still has the slams/olympics/possibly masters cup to worry about.

There's something wrong with him if
he's more obsessed with/emotional over Davis Cup,
World Team Tennis and 10+ exhibitions.

Havok
04-18-2004, 12:30 AM
so you copy the link? and then paste it here? are there explanations at the site?

Havok
04-18-2004, 12:31 AM
heya, DC for Andy is emotional, and it's emotional for pretty much all the top players. World Team Tennis and the exhibitions he does is just for fun, and a better practice session for him that just practicing with Brad.

:haha:

:haha:

I can't stop laughing at that.

at what? lol

As for the comment to Doug, seemed like more of a motherly "don't let him get hurt, he looks really tired, I'm worried about him" type of thing as opposed to he's out of shape, get him into shape like telling him what to do lol. Maybe he was just caught off-guard that someone was addressing him by name as if they knew him? lol

During the first set, we saw someone BOLT out of their seat in the middle of a game across the stadium (which obviously is a huge no no so you knew he had to be someone special to be able to leave in the middle like that)... I recognized the shirt as one of Andy's new ones from Reebok so I thought it might be his brother. Sure enough, a minute later, out of breath, he ran down the stairs next to me and sat down with Brad (he made record time running all the way around the stadium let me tell you!). We assumed it was a "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH HIM" type of conversation, either that or the brother (not sure which one it is, it's the thinner more attractive one) knew what was wrong and was telling Brad. I couldn't see Brad's facial expressions during the match to be able to say if he was surprised at what was happening or if it's what he knew what was going to happen. They showed Andy's parents real quick on the TTC feed on the screens at some point.... they looked so worried about him.

J. Corwin
04-19-2004, 01:38 AM
Weird. I wonder what was going on. Something bad happened that we don't know about? Something that his brother and parents see that we don't/didn't see?

heya
04-19-2004, 01:45 AM
The bum better dump Houston and Memphis out of his schedule. Those events are useless for his career! SLUGGGGG Andy's butt kissing is bad for his tennis...
How annoying is the pity applause, almost as bad as last year's?! LMAO

Deboogle!.
04-19-2004, 01:55 AM
Jace, the only thing I can think of is that they're just worried about their kid/brother, they just want him to be ok. And it really was pretty painful watching him lol

heya, I think Memphis is ok - it's actually San Jose that I think he should dump. It's soon after the AO and DC. Taking San Jose off and just doing Memphis would give him a week off in there. I thought he was going to plan his schedule better, I wonder what happened. Though, from now on it does seem better than it was last year. He did drop Delray, because it got moved to the week after the USO, and that was like REALLY the first tournament that gave him a shot, so that was probably a big deal for him to have to give that one up. He is skipping St. Poelten which is a good idea, and he has a couple less planned for the fall (even though he didn't play some of them because of his hamstring thing last year anyway). So we just *cross fingers* that he can make it through the season. It's only April and there are a lot more slams and TMSs and the OLYMPICS left to come. I don't want to see him burnt out now. Last year he was burnt out in late October. I can handle that. I can't handle burnt out in mid-April lol

This is what I think happened with the scheduling and I got this idea from what Andy said in one of his interviews after San Jose. He said that he went on a tear in the U.S. summer hardcourt season, so why not in the spring hardcourt season. I think that they were worried about protecting those summer points and not having the whole weight of defending them in the summer. Also, Andy is one of those players like Hewitt who plays better when he plays more. I don't think he can ever have a schedule like Andre's or Federer's either for that matter.

LOL it's just that they're really good seats :) A great view of the whole court plus you don't have to deal with sun. The people with the seats around me said that last night for the second dubs semifinal that they moved down to the South section on the baseline and that they were much worse seats than the ones in the corner where you got yours.

Last night Gilbert and co. sat on the other side....not directly across but on the other corner - SE I guess instead of SW. But for his first, QF, and F matches I guess.... he sat below us. And today during the dubs match, Mardy and James's coaches and James's mom (I hope this doesn't come out wrong.... but she's white, and old! LMFAO) sat in those same seats. Every day but today, Haas's coach sat in the South section, but just a few rows away really. Not as close as Brad, Doug, and co.

The most interesting thing was seeing how much interaction they have. Tommy especially, but Andy talked a lot to Brad too.

Yep, I totally agree... and for the most part it worked I'd say, considering at this point last year he had no titles and didn't get his 30th win til Wimbledon. But Davis Cup did something to him.... hopefully it's nothing a little R&R with the family won't fix :)

I don't mind R&R, but I'm not totally convinced about Andy's training regimen. He needs to stay away from those Austin Mexican restaurants. And he needs to run and do short sprints and get in the weight room.

I was reading that interview with Borg where he said that every day when he didn't play tennis -- even when he was on holiday -- he ran to build up stamina, did short sudden start and stop sprints. He believed that was what gave him stamina. He said he could play a 4 hour match with absolutely no difficulty.

Why exactly was it painful to watch him (besides the bad playing)? Was he sluggish? Did he look and act exhausted? Was he coughing again? Did he have dark circles under his eyes? I'm trying to get a visual of him and how he played, that's why I'm asking for details.

I've gotta find this match on tape somewhere. I need to see it myself to really understand the dynamics and how everything went down.

You should write Brad and tell him, I'm serious!

Tangy, Just tired. I didn't see him coughing but I wasn't paying horribly close attention. and I was nowhere near close enough to him to see bags under his eyes and I honestly didn't pay attention when they showed him close up on the screen. You'd have to ask someone who saw it on tv. Like I said to star, I don't remember the last time I saw him play this badly. In the matches we saw him lose this year, to Henman and Marta, he was just outplayed but he played decently. This was just bad.... like I said, tommy probably still would've won if he had played well, but it would probably have been much closer. Andy shouldn't have gotten broken either time, and in a tiebreaker anything can happen.

Fumus tells me from TTC that his serve % was actually good.... but it didn't seem like it AT ALL. Maybe he just missed first serves on important points or something but I was shocked that he served over 60%.

Roddick, Fish and Blake pull out of Monte Carlo
AP

U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick has pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters, along with Americans James Blake and Mardy Fish.

Roddick, who lost in the first round last year, withdrew because of scheduling conflicts, tournament organizers said Monday. Blake and Fish both gave the same reason for pulling out.

Roddick lost the men's final of the U.S. Clay Court Championships to Germany's Tommy Haas on Sunday in Houston. Blake and Fish won the doubles title at the same event.

After losing to Haas, Roddick said he was looking forward to resting before the French Open.

"I'm not physically ready to pick up my bags and head for Monte Carlo," Roddick said. "I have to look out for my best interests of going to play Roland Garros."

Andre Agassi and top-ranked Roger Federer withdrew from the Monte Carlo tournament last week.

The clay-court tournament, which begins Monday and finishes Sunday, has been won by Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain the past two years.

I actually think San Jose is Ok for Andy's schedule depending, of course, where the D.C. tie is held. I think it is better for him to cluster his tournaments. Then he can skip Memphis and have a good two weeks to rest before the rest of the U.S. spring season.

Every top player in every country except Sweden and Australia has opted out of Davis Cup at some point, and I think we can see why.

the thing about Memphis is that it's worth more points and Andy doesn't play many ISG tournaments to begin with. Plus it's another place where he's played well, so I see why he wouldn't want to skip any of these little February tournaments.

I actually think Scottsdale was a good tourney for him to play, in theory anyway. It seemed sort of doomed from the start this year for him, but it was probably on Brad's advice to play a small tourney to get some matches in outdoor hardcourt desert conditions so that the transfer from indoors to outdoors wouldn't be at IW, a much more important tourney. unfortunately the weather didn't really help that too much and it's even earlier next year so I doubt he'll be back.

04-19-2004, 02:23 PM
It was later this year because of the bump every four years. It just goes back one week. That's not so much.

What I don't like about Memphis is that there is a week inbetween it and Scottsdale. It seems better for him to take two weeks of rest than to split up his two weeks of rest with Memphis inbetween. By dropping San Jose, he's got one week off, then a tournament, and then one week off. I think he would do better with having two solid weeks of no tournament play.

Anyway Memphis is indoors and I don't like the indoor season. ;)

Does this mean he won't be playing *any* clay tournaments until Roland Garros?

Deboogle!.
04-19-2004, 04:07 PM
omg no!! I'm sure he'll still play Rome and Hamburg, he just needs a few days off. Andy's made the SF at Rome before, so he knows he can play decently there. He knows he needs to improve his clay results, he can't do that without playing. It would be absolutely horrible if he did not play before RG.

Personally I think it might be a good idea to enter one of the smaller tournaments next week too, Barcelona or Munich, because they get good fields and he needs to play good clay-courters to get experience, even if he loses early. but it might be too late and I don't know if he wants to, since he was never even considering them anyway.

So I'd guess the next thing he'll play is Roma, which starts May 3. So he can take a week off, then ease back into things and get to Rome nice and early to adjust 100% before he has to play.

It's quite good to see him playing (or hearing some news because I don't see him these last time) but if he didn't stop maybe that at the end of the season, he should be to tired.

Rod Laver said that a champion always relies on his serve. No-one here should underestimate that comment. All the best champions in recent times including Roddick and Agassi have a great serve. Becker, Lendl, Federer, Serena, Sampras, Graf, Agassi, Navratilova, Edberg are good examples of this.

The guy I sat next to all week at Houston was a fascinating guy and a tennis player himself. He was in his 60s I'd say, but he was very up and up on all things tennis. We were talking about what people say about Andy's serve and he said how he has a good serve and how he knows it wins him matches but that's the whole point - the serve is the most important shot in the game because if you can't get it over the net to start a point, you CAN'T win. It was a very interesting discussion.

Here's what Marta has to say about scheduling, what do you guys think?
--------
-------
Safin Calls for Tennis Schedule Changes

MONACO, Monte Carlo (AP)--Marat Safin called for changes to the tennis schedule, saying Tuesday that players are burned out and big tournaments will suffer.

``Players have too much tennis,'' the 2000 U.S. Open champion said after beating Olivier Rochus 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the Monte Carlo Masters. ``If you want the best players, you have to give them time to prepare.''

Safin pointed out that Andy Roddick pulled out of the Monte Carlo event Monday, a day after lost in the final of the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Houston.

Roddick would have had to ``fly overnight from Houston, then play on clay the next day?'' Safin said. ``He's lucky if he puts two balls in the court.''

The winning doubles team in Houston, James Blake and Mardy Fish, also pulled out of the Monte Carlo tournament. Top-ranked Roger Federer and Andre Agassi withdrew earlier.

``There has to be a solution,'' Safin said. ``But the players are always playing, so they don't have time to sit down with the ATP organizers and arrange something. Tennis is a beautiful game, it would be a pity to spoil it.''

-------

Safin fears player burn-out
BBC

Marat Safin fears that the relentless demands of the men's tennis tour are threatening the future of the game.
World number one and two Roger Federer and Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi are among the top players to withdraw from this week's Monte Carlo Masters.

"The schedule is very tough. We only have 10 days or two weeks vacation and then you start over again," said Safin.

"After a while you can get burned out completely. Tennis will suffer because of this," the Russian added.

"Players have physical problems because the schedule is so tight without any rest.

The Monaco event is one of the prestigious Masters events and has traditionally been a good warm-up tournament for the French Open.

Safin, runner-up at Estoril on Sunday, staged a comeback to beat Belgium's Olivier Rochus 4-6 6-3 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday.

But former US Open champion believes that the schedule - which saw some of the top players playing in the US last week - is not flexible enough.

"If you want the best players to come to Monte Carlo, you need to give them time to prepare and give their best.

"You keep playing and then you lose this special feeling you have for the big tournaments, you don't enjoy it."

Monaco absentees due to unrealistic schedule - Safin
Tue 20 April, 2004 16:45

MONACO, April 20 (Reuters) - A list of big-name absentees at this week's Monte Carlo Masters is the result of an unrealistic and gruelling schedule, Marat Safin said on Tuesday.

The Russian, who missed most of last season through injury, said the calendar of events burns players out mentally and physically which is why so many stay away from the principality.

World number one Roger Federer, number two Andy Roddick and America's world number five Andre Agassi all chose to miss the $2.89 million event despite it being such good preparation for next month's French Open.

"If you want to have all the best players in the world coming to Monte Carlo you need to give players some time to recover, to prepare, so they can give their best," Safin said after beating Olivier Rochus 4-6 6-3 6-3.

"Players try but they're coming from indoor tournaments or they're coming from Miami, which ended a tough month because you were playing in Indian Wells, you've been playing Scottsdale... all of a sudden you end up in Monte Carlo.

"A TAXI"

"Of course, if you lose one of these matches you lose confidence... then it's already Rome... Hamburg... then the French Open. Basically, you end up with more kilometres than a taxi.

"There is always a reason for not moving tournaments, changing the schedule. It is always 'because, because, because'... but or because'. Nobody ever agrees -- it is difficult.

"After a while you can get burned out completely. The schedule is so tight.

"Take for example Roddick. He is playing in Houston and then he has to fly overnight and play in Monte Carlo the next day -- if he's lucky he could put two balls in the court.

"Federer, also, he needs more time to prepare.

"Something must be done."

Hey for once, Martha makes himself useful and defends Andy. Go post that in GM and watch the Duck hunters completely ignore it. ;)

I had it all ready to post in GM, I gave it a title and everything and then decided against it. You think I should? OK :)

That comment can be read two ways, you know. "He's lucky if he puts two balls in the court." Could also be read as Marat's distain for Andy and thinking he needs a lot more rest than most. But post away. I'm sure the derision will ring down. :)

I disagree with Marat. Players are in charge of their own schedules. No one forced Andy to play in Houston. If he wants to wear himself to a nubbin before Monte Carlo that's his choice. It's not like the players are surprised with Monte Carlo.

lol I didn't take Marat's comments about Andy that way... I took them as empathetic.

And yes, that's pretty much what I said in GM, that they can pick their own schedules but at the same time it's understandable why they'd prefer to play at home. Sort of a double-edged sword.

If they prefer to tire themselves out at lesser tournaments, that's their business. I don't feel sorry for them and it isn't the fault of the ATP for the way they schedule their tournaments.

There is time to rest after Wimbledon from the big tournaments, but do players take advantage of it? No. They go off to play on the clay in Europe or go to some rinky dink tournament in the U.S. Then they complain about Canada and Cinncinatti being so close together.

But Andy had points to defend in Houston. And Houston is his home. To not go to that tournament would've looked badly on him. He's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. :o

I still think the players need three months off during the winter before the new season stars. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :p

It's very difficult to take three months off from tennis. What you will see then is that players are playing in exhibition match after exhibition match. They have to keep up their skills and match play is the only way they can do it. McEnroe took 6 months off one time and never was able to come back from it.

What an entire three months off with no play would result in would be terrible tennis for the first month or two they played.

I agree with you tangy, the Houston tourney puts Andy in a very tough predicament. If he stays home or plays in a different tourney in Europe, he risks pissing Mack off, and considering that Mack's done a lot for him, he doesn't want to upset that balance, but then again he shouldn't play the tournament probably.

He says it's a "staple" on his schedule but it will be interesting to see what happens next year when MC is before it again.

I agree with Marat. The calendar isn't ideal. There too many big tournaments one after the other.
And look, in wta, it's the same problem and this year  Too many players injured or missing in a tournament. And I don't want that there is the same thing in ATP.

Andy was finalist at Houston last year. So I hadn't a real choice. He had points to defend.
So the choice of Andy is normal. Too much tournaments in few times. He needs rest now.

Deboogle!.
04-20-2004, 10:31 PM
the points to defend argument doesn't really work in Andy's case.

He's not defending AT ALL at St. Poelten and that's a title win. Andy has enough other good optional results to fill it with something almost as good and he will barely lose any points, plus assuming the reasoning behind skipping St. Poelten would be to focus on the bigger TMS and RG events where the points are much much bigger, one would assume that he'd do better in those events from being fresher from not playing St. Poelten and will make up the difference in no time. that makes no sense. but I'm too lazy to edit it :)

Maybe... but Houston is playing at home for him (as some of you said). Points isn't the only argument for deciding to play or not a tournament.

Not your Typical Day off!
by: Scot Hirschfield

4/20/2004 -- While the tennis world has shifted to Europe for the TMS Monte Carlo without Andy, Kid Roddick still has work to do. Today, Andy had not one, not two, but three photo shoots for magazine covers. The most interesting aspect of these media opportunities is the diversity of the demographics Andy is reaching. One magazine is a Texas publication, another is one of the largest Men"s magazines, and the third is strictly tennis. With the Summer Olympics in Athens approaching fast, it is likely we will be seeing Andy quite frenquently. When more details are known regarding when these issues will be on magazine stands, ar.com will be the first to let you know.

Brad checks in

4.20.2004 -

Andy was beat and got beat. The Houston final was the culmination of 7 straight weeks of grinding it out dating back to Scottsdale. Andy wasn’t moving great and Tommy saw his opportunity. He was able to neutralize Andy’s game and like a Federer or Henman, Haas gets his stick on a lot of serves. He broke Andy once in each set, giving him his first title in over 2 years. It’s the third time that Tommy has beaten him on clay, so it should be real interesting to see what happens when they meet up on the hard courts. It was the first final that Andy has lost since last year when Andre beat him here in three close sets.

The Kid is tired. He has 7 days of chillin in Austin and then will practice for a few days before we take off for Rome. He’s worked hard and deserves a break.

glad to see brad saw it...but guess what? one thing is that i found an article before deb (about mandy and some bits and pieces about andy) and second of all...I SURVIVED THE FIRST MATH SECTION OF THE TESTING! sadly the second part which we're doing tomorrow, is gonna be all writing for math..and its so hard!! i looked through the whole book even though i wasn't supposed to and these math questions are just complicated. they make no sense

anyway...the article will be posted in that thread which name i forget right now. andy and mandy broke up? or something like that...it'll be there :)
