NALBANDIAN WILL TRAVEL TO MC

After several days of condition, David Nalbandian recovered of the
injury in the right ankle and tomorrow he will travel to Monte Carlo
to participate in the third Masters Series of the season.

The player of Unquillo, that didn't play in the professiona tour
from the 2th of last March, when he fell in the first round of the
ATP of Dubai, trained yesterday in the evening in Buenos Aires, and
after receiving the discharge fromdoctor Vicente Vispe he traveled to
Cordova .

Nalbandian, that got injured during the Davis against Morocco (5-0),
in Agadir, last February, only participated in three official matches
in 2004; in addition to Davis and Dubai, also the Australian Open, in
which he arrived at the quarterfinals. By the same ailment match he
did not play for Argentina that lost from Belarús (0-5), the last
weekend, in Minsk. In MC will also play Guillermo Coria, Guillermo
Canes, Agustín Calleri, Juan Ignacio Chela, Gastón Gaudio and Mariano
Zabaleta.

I am anxious"
Intervoz 17/4/2004

After so many delays, the great day arrived: the unquillense David
Nalbandian will tomorrow leave course to Monte Carlo, to return to
the competition after a month. Caused by inactivity of the injury in
the right ankle. The player to Intervoz confirmed yesterday from
Buenos Aires. The equipment, directed by Eduardo Infantino and Javier
Nalbandian, measured day to day the evolution of the injury. Although
it did not hurt him in the practices, his return to the physical
exigencies generated annoyances to him that as well brought doubts.
Finally they made the decision. "Yes, I am going to travel Sunday",
confirmed top 10, that as soon as it played seven parties this season
and it recognized that he is anxious to return.

The return to the circuit

The injury, an inflammation of the joint in the right ankle, left
hem outside of the Masters Series in Indian Wells and Miami. Even
though Davis against Bielorrusia, two days before the match in Davis
and before undertaking trip to Minsk, he stopped.

The reason?

Not to worry the recovery of an injury that was more complicated of
the predicted thing. But as much stopped time, outside the circuit,
is not positive either. By the same, David and its equipment chose to
travel, to return to put in competition, to live the process to
return to concentrate themselves in their goals and to recover.

"I am not one hundred percents, but I am in conditions and I want to
take hold rate ", he continued.

- You are anxious to return to play?

- Yes, I have a desire but either I am not hopeless. I prefer to be,
healthy. His brother Javier explained the objectives: "David goes in
a 50 percent of condition. Within that, it is necessary to play to
adjust to the competition, and not to continue working here, without
matches. We aimed at the matches of Rome and Hamburg. We do not go
to Barcelona directly exactly to enter climate in precompetition at
Monte Carlo

The luxurious Monte Carlo

The date chosen for the return was decided for medical reasons, but
it agrees with the Masters Series of Monte carlo, the third match of
this type in the season with a prize of 2.42 million euros, that
Monday begins. It will not lack anybody. There will be the Americans
Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, the Swiss Roger Federer, the powerful
Spanish Navy with Juan Carlos Ferrero, Tommy Robredo, Rafael Nadal,
and the Argentine legion with seven presences, among them the
riocuartense Agustín Calleri.

- David, what are your expectations?

One never knows. For me playing first round.

Days .

It was the amount of days of inactivity of the Cordovan. In first
round of the Dubaihe was beated by the Finn Jarkko Nieminen. He was
already injured. 35 points, he has to defend in Monte Carlo, he made
it to the second round in 2003. 5-2. that is his record for this
year. The best performance was quarterfinals in Australian Open

I hope David just turns up on the court and can play without too much pain, really the results of this tournament aren't very important, the health is the most important thing. I just don't want to see him play 5 games then retire injured.

If he plays at 10:00, then I can follow the liveboard at 20:00 in my country, so the time won't be too fussy. And if he wins, I would be happy to appreciate the video of his game at 23:00 or some time later.

Without Ferrero David has a great oportunity to come back victourious but i think that is not very important important. The most important is that he is playing without pain but with passion like in Estoril Open when he won! (I WAS THERE)

I like Mantilla too, and they both need the victory, because Feliz has to defend the Italian Open soon.

He´s vey motivated and he has a great board: e wins over mantilla and then he plays with santoro or dent! Santoro´s very experient and phisically very good! Dent isn`t very good at clay! David will win against one of them!

Força David! Portugal está contigo e eu também! :)

Totally agree it's very hard as I like them both and I am not sure who to go for.

Mantilla won the last 2 times they played and he could easily frustrate David, though that excellent performance against Hrbaty must have helped his confidence for sure, though Felix is a very different player who won't hit as hard or miss as much as Hrbaty.

OK - quick match report for those who have asked. The first set was tremendous - well for me anyway, - maybe not for Felix fans!!!! David was on fire and moving well and I was really enjoying myself. He started the 2nd set well but Felix definately upped his level - it became a very close and good match, and you could see that David was getting tired. When he served for the match at 5-4 I just had this feeling he was going to tense up and lose his serve and, of course, that was exactly what he did and went on to lose that set 5-7. As for the final set - a nightmare...... David looked so tired he could hardly drag his feet across the court - it was very hot and he is still carrying some excess weight and not match fit. He look exhausted at 0-3 down and I was convinced it was over, but Felix helped him xith a few double faults, and suddenly it was 3-3.....then he served for the match again at 5-4.....then he lost his serve again......OMG! And OK - i admit - I was too nervous to watch the tie-break - i kind of hid my fqce in my hands - but he did it - and the is very, very happy - but very tired too!

And so am I......talk to you later. And you know the best bit about MC - there's no Duckboy here!!!!!!!

Love,

Rosie

Hi, Rosie!! So nice to see u again!! The match is really painful but with a good result!! ;) We are all nearly faint for about 2 hours, guess you must suffer much more when watching him live. Glad to know he won over his game, the hot weather and his excess weight of course;) Hope he can go farther in MC, then he can get more matches, then lose more weight....;)

04-21-2004, 05:23 PM
David always does this, he loves making us suffer! Remember in January when he was playing against Duckboy in that exhibition? He had the match, I think he was 4-0 or something like that and somehow that ended up in a tie break!!! But he won it ;) I thought he was gonna lose that match too but I guess we always forget that he always does this and he never gives up!

David's interview
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. After the Masters Cup in Houston, when have you started preparing
for the year 2004?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: When?

Q. Yeah.
DAVID NALBANDIAN: December.

Q. In December. You were about one month holidays?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No, no, no, less. Little less. I finish it, I
think, on 10 or 12 in Houston, of November.

Q. What's important during your training? What's important for you
to eat? What are important things?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: I think food is very important - very, very
important, for recover your physic in December. And either way, in
Australia, it's too hot so you have to be careful with everything.

Q. What are exactly important things do you eat?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: I have to tell you (smiling)?
THE MODERATOR: Questions about the match first, if you don't mind.

Q. Was a completely different match from the one you played against
Fabrice in Madrid a few years ago. Do you remember?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, yeah, was different. Right now is clay
courts. Last match was indoors - so fast, with altitude.
So I think I play very good today. I feel good on the court.
Yesterday I played very long match and today I feel perfect, so I'm
very happy for that.

Q. Yeah? Clay is not your favorite surface?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No, but I think I can play good also.

Q. But you said it was different match because it was indoor, but
you can also play very well indoor.
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, well, but some time you don't play your best
tennis, and I think that day I didn't feel good, and Fabrice played a
good match.

Q. He just told us that you could be No. 1. What do you feel about
it?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: I think is not impossible. You have to work very
hard. I think I'm gonna try to do it, but this year with my injury
in my ankle, I didn't start the year very good.
But I'm gonna try. I think I have many months to still work on it,
and I think I have a chance.

Q. What about playing Coria now?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Oh, is gonna be a tough match. We play together
when we was maybe 10 or 12 years. So he know me too much, I know him
a lot. Is gonna be a very tough match, and I hope try to do my best
tomorrow.

Q. Last time you had to play against him it was in the final in
Basel.
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, but we didn't play.

Q. So last time you played him was...?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: February last year in Argentina. I lost 7- 6 in
the third.

Q. What is your tactic against Coria?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Tactic? I have to think about it.

Q. How many hours do you play tennis a day?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Depends. Depends my ankle. But normally I play
between three and four hours a day.

Q. Do you still like it, or is it..?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: If I don't like it, I didn't do it.

Q. Did you hold up with your ankle today?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, perfect.

Q. Even when you were sliding?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I feel every day better

Hi - I'm just off to watch David's practise session - his match will be later today on Court Centrale. Of course I am nervous and want him to win, but getting so far is a great achievement. I am so proud of him and will cheer for him for you all.

Love,

Rosie in Monte Carlo :)

David played well in the first set especially :) but Guillermo really played well.

Still a great comeback tournament, especially the Felix and Hrbaty wins :D

Vamos David :bounce:

Dammit  I couldn't watch the match......

Such a pity that they had to face each other at this stage.....I have mixed feelings right now....anyway as I said before, it's so cool to finally have David back to the courts....

David  :bigcry: Well, i am atleast happy that he is playing and he says in his interviews he feels great, which is always great news. :) I'm just glad he is playing now, and made the QF only to lose to one of the best clay courters out there. Not disapointing. I wish David would play Coria on hard, where i think he would win easily. (Not because Coria's bad on hard, but because david's so damn good and dominating on hardcourt ;) :) Now, i can cheer for Marat to win this tournement, without any trouble, now that David's out. Good luck in youre next tourney David :woohoo:  If any of you read Corias interview he said Nalbandian has a 'very big serve'. (exact quote). Well its now wonder he has trouble with Andy's serve if he thinks David has a huge serve

He said that??? LOL! Ok, I guess he was talking about yesterday's serve and I might agree on that...but still LOL!!!
Anyway, while I was reading a comment in a newspaper I realized that, they only played on clay, so let's wait till the hardcourt season starts, maybe we can see that Basel final again, I'm sure things will be different there...

Why do all of you always expect only the hard court season? The clay season is still long, and MC is just the first one. Yeah, I agree that Coria always plays well on clay, but I don't think David's clay is so terrible that he can never beat Coria on clay. I just check the head to head record and found that they were very close in last year's BSAS. As to yesterday, evidently, David just returned to the court and hasn't reach the match fit yet. I believe he can play better and better in the future clay tournament, and has the chance of beating Coria in return!!
As to the hard court season, definitely, Coria has no chance at all....;)

LOL!!! Well, I'm waiting for the Barcelona draw to see where they could meet again on clay...

That's it!!! David, if you meet Coria again on clay, don't miss the chance of taking revenge!! Let's see your real performance on clay!;)
