Canada, New Zealand and Australia are the best countries outside of Europe.

Good to see cities like New York at the bottom with all their slums and high crime.

Nothing too surprising...but always good to see that there are a couple of Asian cities in the top 50 :) !

Not to mention their filthy people.

Don't know how Sydney is rated 9th. It's the filthiest city in Australia.

Seems to me that the scores are close enough that there is not much difference. Anyway, it depends on how much money you have.

This is so relative. I wouldn't live in Geneve for all the gold of the world. I found it so depressing. I prefer other kind of life (bigger cosmopolitan cities, such as Berlin, Sydney, Toronto) but it's all a matter of taste.

Melbourne is a much better place to live than Sydney in my opinion.

I fail to see how this "study" is any more than a biased opinion

you are reading the scores wrong. it looks close but it is not close. go to zurich and new york and you know what i mean.

All big cities have rough areas. And you didn't say anything about cleanliness.

I personally prefer Europe over the US as a place to live, but New York is nowadays a pretty safe city (unless you go to specific problem spots) and if you want to see slums go to Africa or India or South America, not NY.

i highly doubt zurich has rough areas and most if not all swiss cities are very clean. manhattan probably is clean as it's the area of the rich people but the rest of new york doesn't look so clean like most european cities. if you consider the bronx is just north of manhattan new york shows a huge contrast of poor and rich people.

I guess from a eurocentric/ethnocentric point of view, "Asian" cities are not very liveable. And when was the last time Auckland, Wellington, Sydney and Melbourne were in Asia?

I agree with most of this. But this has nothing to do with what you wrote in your first post. You said there that NY has slums and a high crime rate. Neither of those assertions hold true.

Zurich is not nearly as big as NY. By big cities I mean over 8 million people. Zurich is actually quite small. Granted, smaller cities are usually cleaner and safer, but there's a tradeoff in that. In the end it all comes down to personal preference. Even the study says that at the end.

If you value cleanliness so highly, by all means avoid NY (even Manhattan) and stay in Zurich or Singapore.

As a follow up, as I said I prefer Europe over to US as a place to live. But I would probably live in a city like Rio de Janeiro, which does have slums and a high crime rate, over a clean and safe place which lacks soul. By all objective quality-of-living stats Rio is crap but it's an extremely exciting and beautiful place. You can't measure that, but for many people it's all that matters in the end.
