PILOT PEN TENNIS NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT August 26, 2005 V. HANESCU/T. Robredo 7 -6(4), 6 -4, 6 -4 VICTOR HANESCU Q. You had a tough third set. You had all those breakpoints you had to fight off. How hard was it to survive all those breakpoint chances he had against you? VICTOR HANESCU: Yes, I was also a bit tired. I had some tough matches this week and I saved a lot of breakpoints. It was very difficult but I was very calm, very focused on my serve. I think this was the key of my game today. Q. What do you make of who you are going to have to play next when you look at it later this afternoon, the game -- VICTOR HANESCU: With Chela and Blake, no? Q. Yes. VICTOR HANESCU: With Chela I played before in this year in French Open, I won. With Blake I lost on grass, so Blake, he's a good player, especially on this kind of surface, he likes to play here. Of course it will be a tough match. Q. Do you think he has sort of an advantage because of the home court? VICTOR HANESCU: Yes, of course, it's an advantage when you play home like -- you can say it's an advantage. Q. Have you seen any of his matches here thus far? VICTOR HANESCU: No, not really. Maybe today I will have the chance to watch him. Q. Could you sense Robredo getting frustrated when he couldn't get that break in the third? VICTOR HANESCU: I think I was also a little bit lucky. Also my serve was very good in the important moments, so I think it was very frustrating for him. Q. You hadn't won too many hard court matches this year. What's been the difference this week? VICTOR HANESCU: Usually I am not playing too much on hard courts because I am -- until now I wasn't used to play on hard courts. We don't have in Romania courts like this, so we have only clay courts and I don't know, this year I start to play better and better on this kind of courts, so I am feeling confident now and I am looking forward for the next matches and also for the US Open. Q. With the way you serve, I mean, this is a good surface for you? VICTOR HANESCU: Yes. Q. You can get a lot of free points? VICTOR HANESCU: Yes. Q. Do you think you might start trying to play more hard court matches in the future? VICTOR HANESCU: For sure, I think to play more matches on hard courts. I think I it's also -- a little bit much easier than clay courts when you have to play so many rallies from the baseline. Here if the serve is working it's much easier. Q. You said you like to stay calm. Is that the way you just play; don't get too high or low emotionally? VICTOR HANESCU: This is my style. I am not like Nadel or like other players, but it's good for me, I think. Q. You've always been like that even when you were younger? VICTOR HANESCU: Yes. Q. You say you haven't played much on the hard courts. But since your game suits well with the surface why haven't you ventured and tried to play more before? VICTOR HANESCU: I don't know, I tried also last year I played US Open and something it was one tournament before, but I don't know, here when the weather it's very, when it's very humid it's very tough for me, I am sweating a lot and it's very difficult to play, but this week, the weather was very, very good. I don't know, it's interesting, it's a different style. I am used to play on clay courts, I know the game on clay; I played most of the tournaments in Europe, so now when I am coming here in the States, it's something different, but I am trying to, I don't know -- Q. Who would you rather play Chela or Blake going into the next round if you had your druthers? VICTOR HANESCU: Let's say Chela. Q. Just because you beat him before or because of the home-court advantage? VICTOR HANESCU: Also because I beat him before and it is difficult when you play against the crowd. But anyway, I am in good shape. My game is working well. Doesn't matter who is playing in the semifinal, Chela or Blake. Q. What does it mean for your confidence to be in the semifinals of an event like this? VICTOR HANESCU: It's very important. It's also good because it's a good result on hard courts, so next week US Open starts I am going there with confidence to win also some matches, it will be a good job. Q. You reached quarters at the French Open. Does that give you extra confidence knowing that you have had some success at Grand Slams this year? VICTOR HANESCU: I think it was an important moment in my career after that result I was more confident. I understand that I can play with everybody, I can beat good players, so mentally I am more confident now. Q. What changed? Are you more aggressive? Do you trust your shots more now because of those results? VICTOR HANESCU: Something like this, yes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PILOT PEN TENNIS NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT August 27, 2005 J. BLAKE/V. Hanescu 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 VICTOR HANESCU Q. How tough was the crowd tonight all cheering for James; did that affect you at all? VICTOR HANESCU: It's not easy to play against for a crowd like this. Some people here are really crazy. Really, some of them are. I have never seen something like this in my life, but anyway, James, he played well, I think he deserve this victory. Q. Seemed like you had a lot of momentum after that, the tiebreaker going into the third set. Was there something at one point where you just kind of felt it slipping away a little bit? VICTOR HANESCU: After the second set? Q. Yeah, seemed like you had momentum. VICTOR HANESCU: I lost the first game in the first set, so I think this was the big moment for him because when you start with one break down, it's quite difficult in the third set, but also he played well in the next games. Q. Were you worried that early on you got a couple of calls that didn't go your way, that were certainly borderline, some line calls. Add that up with the sort of crowd, did you sometimes get a sense that this wasn't going to go your way tonight? VICTOR HANESCU: I had some moments when the -- one was, let's say, close to the line and linesmen called it out, but this is normal, everywhere is like this. I don't know. No, it's normal. Sometimes it's normal to be like this. Q. What about the weather, did the delays -- I noticed one time the official, the chair umpire left it up to you guys to see if you wanted to continue, it seemed. Did that throw you off at all, just seemed like he was asking you guys? VICTOR HANESCU: It was interesting in that moment it was a little bit of rain, but very little and the referee said to stop the game. I was serving, then I was staying two minutes come back on court, it was tough. And it was in the tiebreak it was an important moment, and also I lost the first set. Q. Was that critical -- I thought that was hugely critical in this match? VICTOR HANESCU: It was, yes. Q. At what point did the fans start to get to a point where it was annoying? I was hearing -- James said he didn't hear anything negative. I kind of did. I don't know if it got personal. Did that affect you at all? VICTOR HANESCU: No, not really. Q. You heard it though? VICTOR HANESCU: Of course, but I am trying to -- when I am playing I am trying to be focused on the game. I am not listening to everybody, so I knew that it's going to be like this, when you play with James here, it's normal. Some of them are more than -- Q. Over the line? VICTOR HANESCU: Over the line, yeah. Q. Are you happy going into the Open with the way you are playing? VICTOR HANESCU: Yes, my game, it's very good this moment. I had a good week here in New Haven. I improved a lot my game on hard courts, so I am happy with this, and of course I am looking forward for the Open. I hope to win some matches there and it will be great. Q. Was it fatigue in the third set or was it -- what happened there that you just sort of -- after a great second, end of the second set? VICTOR HANESCU: It was also fatigue, I had some long matches this week. Also first round it was a tough match. And also James played some great games, great points, so -- Sandra 08-28-2005, 06:34 PM Thanks for the interviews  scythe19pro 08-28-2005, 06:48 PM You're welcome! :) Mara_M 08-29-2005, 07:37 PM hahah....it's the same interview wich was in the libertatea newwspaper today..but in english:p scythe19pro 08-30-2005, 04:01 AM really? He'll find getting there is less tiring than trying to go through Monaco on Sunday. That's Juan Monaco, the energetic, apparently indefatigable young Argentine who plays tennis like he's getting paid by the hour. Monaco, 22, who won the 72nd River Oaks International doubles championship with Peru's Luis Horna on Saturday night, didn't win the singles title from Hanescu on Sunday — but he won a stadium full of hearts for the heart he showed in reaching the final. Call him the Ernie Banks of tennis, except he says, "Let's play three!" Answering the call In theory, Monaco should have gone down easily against the more accomplished and far more rested Romanian Hanescu. But he had shown Saturday that doing things the easy way isn't his forte. It took Monaco three hours, 14 minutes to fight past Greece's Vasilis Mazarakis in Saturday's semifinals and another two hours, 58 minutes before he let Hanescu off the hook 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday. In between, he spent 80 more minutes in the doubles final, this after needing three sets and two hours Friday night to take out Horna. At least Monaco isn't being asked to return to the fray tonight against American Mardy Fish, his first-round opponent in the U.S. Clay Court Championships at Westside Tennis Club. But had the ATP scheduled Monaco to play tonight, he insists that would have been perfectly fine with him. "I feel well," Monaco said. "I sleep good, I do some good stretching with my physical trainer, (I have) some good food to eat and I recover very well. "Much tennis yes, but tennis is like this. If you want to win, you have to run and you have to fight. Here the matches were so long, but I am a fighter. I like to play three sets. I like so much to stay on the court. I know it's good for me and maybe not so good for the other guy." Determination in final The second-seeded Hanescu didn't seem to enjoy the ordeal as much as the young man he beat, but he also grimly stayed the course. He refused to throw up his arms in frustration despite failing to convert countless opportunities to make the match short. The two players had never faced off, but Hanescu said knew enough about the Argentine to realized what he was in for. "I expected a tough match," Hanescu said. "I know he doesn't quit, and he didn't." No, he doesn't. Monaco fought off seven break points in the first game alone, a sign of the arduous things to come. He also saved three set points against him before forcing the tiebreaker, which he dominated, losing his only point on a double fault. Then, after letting the second set slip away despite getting up a break on Hanescu early, he broke in the seventh and ninth games of the third set. Even in the final game, he forced Hanescu to a third championship point before succumbing on a perfectly placed, crosscourt forehand. Monaco wasn't going to lose the title. Rather, Hanescu, ranked 47th on the ATP computer to his 71st, was going to have to take it. Payday for No. 2 Monaco heads across town with $35,000 in his pocket and, he said, "some very good experience" to show for his hard week's work at River Oaks. Monaco is the No. 10 player in his country, and he's ahead of Mariano Puerta and Guillermo Cañas only because they have been suspended for failing drug tests. Hanescu pocketed $50,000, enough to make the trip to Houston worthwhile. He said he isn't staying for the Clay Courts because he wanted to return to Bucharest for a day or two. Then he will go to Monte Carlo early to practice for the year's first Masters Series tournament on clay. So it's Monte Carlo Masters next. Kezzi 10-30-2007, 09:56 PM Ok, there hasn't been posted about Victor since a long time :p But I thought you might want to hear this story. I was at the qualifications in Aachen this saturday, Victor is in the MD, but he already was walking around there. At one point I wanted to get some food, so I walked over to order pasta and Victor was also standing there studying the menu. When I noticed it was him, he looked at me and I just smiled and went on with ordering my food. Didn't know if I should say something or not. But when I orderded he kept looking and when I looked back at him, he asked "What is this?" pointing out 'Frikadelle'. The menu was all in German, so I started explaining to him what it is in Holland. When the people serving the food showed him one, it turned out to be completely different than one in Holland  I had the idea it was the same, just written a little different :p ciprianned 11-18-2007, 07:16 PM Hanescu lose at Tursunov at Dnepro in semifinals 6-4 7-5 ciprianned 11-18-2007, 07:19 PM Photo with Hanescu in Quarter finals with Santoro : 132005 ciprianned 02-17-2008, 07:22 PM Hanescu vs. Vliegen in first round at San Jose . Match Report The 26-year-old is the eighth player this season to have saved match points en route to an ATP title. He saved three match points in a 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(11) victory over Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the second round. Hanescu is the first Romanian winner of an ATP title since Andrei Pavel clinched the 2001 ATP Masters Series Canada (Montreal) trophy (d. Rafter). ATPtennis.com caught up with the Bucharest resident after his maiden triumph. You saved three match points in the second round over Karlovic. Did you ever think you would go on winning your first ATP title? It was a very difficult and a very close match against Karlovic. I was lucky, but the win gave me confidence. My win over a Top 10 player such as Stanislas Wawrinka in the semifinals was a great moment. It was really important for me. You won only five ATP matches this year coming into Gstaad. What did you do differently this week? After Wimbledon I felt my game was getting better and I went home for one week to practice on clay. I came to Gstaad thinking I would play good tennis and raise my standard of play. Of course I was lucky against Karlovic, but everything thereafter went much better. You reached a career-high No. 35 in the December 2005, how would you compare you are playing now? I think I am very close to that level. I played very solid in the Gstaad final and I think that was similar to 2005. You have had your best results thus far on clay, what do you consider your strengths on the surface? My favorite surface is clay, as I grew up on the surface. I know how to play the game really well on it. I think my serve is good and my groundstrokes from the baseline also allow me to build points. When did you know that you would become a professional tennis player? First of all my parents told me to play basketball, as they felt at six-and-a-half I was too young to play tennis. On my way back home, I saw some tennis courts and decided to play. When I was 18, I won the national championships and that is when I realised I could be a good player. Were there any players you admired when you were growing up? My idol was Pete Sampras and I watched all of his major matches. He really inspired me to compete. Ilie Nastase, a legend in Romania, also inspired me a great deal. Dracula 07-15-2008, 08:43 AM Bravo Victor !! First Round in Kitz against Pablo Andujar, good luck ! Victor won his match over Marchenko 7-6 7-5 6-4 but Stakhovsky defeated Ungur in 4 sets in the second rubber. Victor will have to win on Sunday and probably hope that the scheduled (never know if Victor may play it) doubles pair of Tecau/Copil beats the Ukrainian doubles team of Stakhovsky/Bubka today. Good luck to Romania in Davis Cup and Victor next week at Madrid! Filo V. 05-08-2010, 05:20 AM Highlights from Victor's match with Rafa: OU_M2M4zctE& He may have lost this match but he played great and would have beaten many players that day :) Very impressive ball striking. Baghdatis#1 05-08-2010, 07:39 PM He won his doubles rubber and Romania now leads 2-1 :yeah: Just needs to beat Stakhovsky tomorrow and Romania will get the win  Filo V. 05-09-2010, 01:57 AM Victor has a chance to win all 3 rubbers and advance Romania to WG playoffs, he's such a Davis Cup warrior! If they had one better singles player they would be much more dangerous but Victor has always done his part to make the Romanian team competitive, singles and doubles. Good luck tomorrow vs. Stakhovsky, Victor! Filo V. 05-10-2010, 04:02 AM Victor defeated Stakhovsky 6-4 6-2 7-5 today in the Davis Cup and won all 3 rubbers to drive Romania to victory 3-1 over Ukraine at home!!!! Romania is now going to play in September for a place in the world group. Victor always comes up big for his country and this weekend is no different. He has really good mental strength that always shines through when playing for Romania especially. Congrats to Victor and the entire Romanian team! Filo V. 05-10-2010, 04:07 AM Now that Victor has once again pushed Romania to a win in Davis Cup, his focus is back on his personal career, and the tournament this week in Madrid. Here is his section of the draw: [3] MURRAY, Andy GBR vs. BYE CUEVAS, Pablo URU vs. [Q] CHELA, Juan Ignacio ARG HANESCU, Victor ROU vs. ANDREEV, Igor RUS [Q] MUNOZ-DE LA NAVA, Daniel ESP vs. [14] QUERREY, Sam USA Andreev is tough on clay and has a 3-2 H2H advantage, so that will be a tough one for Victor. He is, however, currently playing much better than Andreev so if he plays well and isn't too tired from the Davis Cup he should win that match. Likely Querrey in the second round is also tough but he is not a clay court player and he is coming off a hard week in Belgrade, so a win there and a possible 3R match (and upset???) vs. Murray is possible. Hopefully he gets through his first match and goes forward from there. Good luck in Spain, Victor! Aţi stabilit ceva? Nu am stabilit încă nimic, dar o să fie la anul. Eşti un sportiv atrăgător. Ai admiratoare? Nu prea am unele de care să ştiu. Am evitat lucrul acesta. Dar mai apar admiratoare la turnee. Trimit scrisori la hotel, uneori te şi abordează direct. Baghdatis#1 07-29-2011, 12:31 AM Victor got married :aparty: Filo V. 03-20-2012, 03:49 AM The last 6-8 months have been very difficult for Victor, as he has been dealing with an assortment of physical issues, primarily leg/knee problems that have been chronic. Victor has not won back-to-back matches since Nice last May and is in danger of losing his top 100 ranking in a few weeks. This season has been better than last so far, as he has defeated Querrey, Mahut, Souza and Andujar on the year, with Querrey and Mahut victories being on hardcourt. This week Victor is playing a challenger on clay in Marrakech, Morocco. He is playing qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round, a very winnable match. Hopefully Victor makes a deep run at this event and can reestablish a bit of form on European clay. GL to Vic in Africa! Filo V. 03-21-2012, 03:12 AM Victor defeated the qualifier Basilashvili 7-6(6) 6-3. He's been sick this week ad today was a struggle in both sets, but what's most important is he got through the match and got the victory. His second round match will be played Wednesday against Augustin Gensse, the fourth match on the center court. Hopefully he feels better and can defeat Gensse and continue to build a string of victories and gain confidence. GL, Vic! Filo V. 03-27-2012, 04:09 AM Victor made it to the SF of Marrakech, defeating Gensse and Carreno-Busta in straight sets before losing to Klizan in the semis. He played well during the week but tweaked his knee during the loss vs Klizan, so hopefully he will be OK for future events and his knee can hold up, and there isn't any serious damage. His next scheduled tournament is a challenger in Barletta next week, hopefully he can produce some more good tennis and gain some more points before his Casablanca points drop. Filo V. 04-01-2012, 04:26 PM Victor will play Vagnozzi in the first round of Barletta. It's a difficult draw as he's scheduled to play Starace in the QF, but hopefully he plays his best and can make a deep run here in Italy! Filo V. 04-04-2012, 03:21 AM 6-3 7-6(2) win over Vagnozzi in Barletta. Pretty tough match as Vagnozzi is a very scappy player, but Victor's power ended up seeing him through. He plays Huta Galung in R2 on Thursday, a very winnable match. Hopefully he'll win easily to boost his confidence and not take any unnecessary energy away before he starts playing better players. Filo V. 04-06-2012, 01:52 AM Victor won 6-3 6-2 over Huta Galung. He played well overall and seems very motivated, and most importantly, healthy. Vic plays Starace in the QF, the third match on center court. Starace has a 4-2 H2H lead over Vic so hopefully he can turn the tables on Friday! Dead Net Cord 09-21-2012, 08:40 PM Victor has played a lot of challengers in recent months. He won Timisoara and Banja Luka challengers and was the runnner up in 3 another challengers.
