lol, Canas is one of the favourites for the clay season, yet he's not getting direct entry in two of the three TMS events.

When was the last time there were no withdrawels at any event, let alone TMS?

Surely Ancic is bound to withdraw.

Is there an official reason why Lee withdrew?

Maybe they figure Seppi has a good chance of qualifying and if they want 5 Italians in the draw, they have to let Bracciali straight into the MD.

Starace and Volandri have a good chance of qualifying as well
this doesnt mean that the should give WCs to Galvani and Sanguinetti

Agreed. PHM might have to skip the tournament because he's still in Estoril and might not make it to Rome for qualifying.

PHM really is in no position to complain, as a Frenchie he has been flooded with wild cards in his career. That's too bad for him, but it's his problem if his ranking isn't high enough to enter the main draw.EVery WC is Italian - I've always thought that even though tournaments favour players from their country there is at least one WC for another player. Madrid is a bit different with the poll where people can choose one WC, that's how Massu got a WC 2 years ago.

Obviously, I'm biased but I just think he deserves a WC because 1) He's been playing well, 2) He can't play qualies unless he loses today in Estoril and 3) His ranking this week would have been high enough to get him into the MD.

hiw many WCs are for americans at US Open??

I agree...that's my point. I think it's stupid. It should go by merit...for example, someone like Canas who has done so well lately should get one (the finals at Miami should qualify him for a WC). Or for someone who has done well in the past, but has gone down in the rankings due to injury and is making a comeback. Not by nationality. Yes, maybe one. But not all four. :( And for players in bigger countries like the US with lots of tournaments, their lower ranked guys have an unfair advantage of being able to get more WCs.

I think it's really stupid how they make the entry lists so far in advance. Like you said, Mathieu's ranking is high enough now to get in without needing to qualify. I mean not only is that causing him problems for Rome, but his new ranking won't even get him into Hamburgs main draw. He shouldn't have to qualify and he's so far down the alternates list.

I also think that a tournament shouldn't start, not even the qualifying rounds, while another tournament is still going on. A player shouldn't have to make decisions or worry about whether they will be able to make it to their next destination on time. It's ridiculous really, and it's only going to cause players to retire from and tank matches.

I don't like bye's either. It makes the draw smaller, when without them more players would get in. I really don't think anybody should have a free pass to the next round. The only thing that I think is a positive to some players, is that the lower ranked players don't have the chance of playing somebody like Federer in the first round. They at least have a better chance of making it to the second round.

Most tournaments have the SE to solve this problem

SEs only apply if the tournament they're still playing in is the same or higher tier than the one the following week. So it doesn't apply to Paulo in Estoril as Estoril is lower than Rome TMS.

WCs have always been a joke...ridiculous that ppl like Cañas have to qualify. He at least should have been given one. All 4 to Italians is too biased...this should not be allowed. There should be a rule at all tournaments that all WCs cannot be given to the home nation...most of the time they never get past the 1st round.
