Ferrero Returns to Valencia

The singles main draw of the II Open de Tenis Comunidad Valenciana is headed by top seed and defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, one of 17 Spaniards in the field, not including the qualifiers. Ferrero claimed his 11th ATP trophy here at the Club de Tenis Valencia last year, defeating Christophe Rochus of Belgium in the final.

Ferrero opens up his Valencia campaign against Spanish wild card and close friend Israel Matos Gil. The 20-year-old from Segovia, who is a member of the Academia Equelite-Juan Carlos Ferrero in Villena, makes his debut in an ATP-level event this week.

Second seed Feliciano Lopez meets Russia's Igor Andreev for the first time in his career. No. 3 seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia takes on wild card Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The 20-year-old wild card won the Portugal F1 Futures in Faro in March, defeating Philipp Petzschner in the final. Like Matos Gil, he competes in an ATP event for the first time in his career.

Fourth seed Albert Costa, who plays in the Valencia tournament for the first time, faces countryman Galo Blanco. 27-year-old Blanco, who advanced to the Costa do Sauipe quarterfinals in February, defeated Alex Calatrava before losing to Gaston Gaudio in the second round here in Valencia one year ago. Costa has won all their previous four encounters but this is the first time they meet since Bucharest in 1999.

Elsewhere in first round action, Costa's good friend Alex Corretja meets No. 5 seed David Sanchez. Last year Corretja encountered an opening round loss against Frenchman Antony Dupuis, while Sanchez lost to Chile's Nicolas Massu in round two. Sanchez has a 2-1 record against Corretja and he won their two most recent encounters, Gstaad and Bucharest in 2003.

Rain delay... at least this gives JC some rest, considering he was saying that he was tired after Davis Cup win.

04-17-2004, 10:43 AM
ahm... rest? he'll have to play 2 matches in 1 day now.
But probably just two 2-setters, so it's not too bad.

04-17-2004, 01:27 PM
JC won 6-4, 6-4:)! He looks in good form right now:)!!!

GOOOOOO JC:D!!!!!! He plays Verdasco in some moments!!!!!

04-17-2004, 03:53 PM
  JC lost 6-2 6-1 to verdasco in the semis... i wonder what happened there? fatigue? bad day? or verdasco played really really well???

04-17-2004, 04:35 PM
My initial thought is because he was too tired...I still dont kno for sure if that other guy played well, but I still think he was too tired from the match earlier against Ancic. Its not fair for one guy, who I mite add was the last one to finish his quaterfinal match out of the three, to be the first one out on court after only a few hours of rest. Well anyway, gd luck to JC in Monte Carlo!!!

04-17-2004, 05:16 PM
sigh... why oh wh?? :( tsk tsk

rest well and DO WELL IN MONTE CARLO AND in the coming weeks!!! :D

LOL Sharon I think you pretty much summed up all the possible reasons... ;)

From Eurosport:

Top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero said his shock defeat by fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the semi-finals of his hometown tournament in Valencia was one of the worst performances of his career. :awww: "It was a very bad match," said Ferrero following his comprehensive 6-2 6-1 defeat on Saturday.

"I never found my rhythm and felt uncomfortable on the court.

"He (Verdasco) started very strongly, playing very well and I just went downhill after that. It was one of the worst days I've ever had in tennis."

Ferrero, who won the inaugural tournament last year, looked drained following a 6-4 6-4 victory over Mario Ancic of Croatia in a rain-delayed quarterfinal and was never able to cope with Verdasco's pin-point serves and powerful forehands.

Rest well Juanqui, you've got a very tough draw in Monte Carlo.

Ferrero, who won the inaugural tournament last year, looked drained following a 6-4 6-4 victory...[/i]

He didn't mention how he felt physically, which is great because people will be all over him if he said anything about tired. But the press confirmed what I thought, that he's still not back in his form after chicken pot. If it is a hard fought match and he lost 7-5 7-5, then I would wonder more of why he lost. But him losing 6-1 6-2 on clay just tell me that he's not himself.

That's worrying anyway. It's a pretty tough draw in MC for him. It would be tough to defend his title even if he's in form. Now just complicates thing :(
