It seems that last week's choke against Murray affect Tommy's game :rolls:

Shocking from Haas - who has been in such good form.

That's a real "wheels fallen off" result.

Great result for falla, nice to see a guy who has struggled with injuries finally get a big win, he almost beat Lubiic last week also, btw I gave falla no chance in this game...

Haas doensn`t seem to like the conditions in Miami. But nevertheless: Big respect to Falla, who also was nearly winning against Ljubo the week before.

This is where he lives - it's home turf for Tommy. If he doesn't like the conditions - WTF??? Why live there? He better than most should be used to the conditions.

Can't help wondering if that loss shook him a bit. Losing to Federer in Dubai - well you know, it's almost expected. But that's a match he probably should have won. May have knocked his recent equilibrium off a bit.

I just wanna say, he doesn`t like windy conditions at all. And that`s what Miami is often about. Key Biscayne or cities like Hamburg as well. Surely he got used to it by raising up and training a lot in Florida, but i guess windy conditions affect his style of game a lot.

But nevertheless: Conditions are the same to all players and i just have to say Falla was just better today and i guess this guy will be one to watch within the next monts.

He feels home on HC, quite seldom for a Columbian and also has quite solid game on clay and Grass as well. Good allrounder who had just bad luck with injuries and lots of other setbacks.

that's a major bummer. i didn't think falla was any threat to tommy, i don't know what happened to him there. as four:love said, this could have been his tournament. now it's off to clay, where he's usually not been that good.

pretty bad...

Can't help wondering if that loss shook him a bit.

After that match I turned to my brother and said, "That's the kind of loss that can de-rail your whole season." Tommy isn't terrible on clay, but I don't think he'll gain a lot of confidence over the next 10 weeks.

You make a fair point.

Very well done to Falla - clearly he played well enough and took his chances, didn't choke when the moment arrived to get the win.

Even so, it's not unfair to say it's probably a match the Tommy Haas who has been around most of this season should have won.

strong wind, eh? tommy hates strong wind like no other player. it drives him nuts to play under these conditions.

Haas lost his serve 4 times. I mean that's some change from recent tournaments in which he's barely faced a break point nevermind conceded serve. Even his second serve has been tough to win points off.

Great start to the season from Tommy but it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he does little on the clay or the grass. Last year had a similar feel to it.

Wow! Was that lucky loser Falla so good or was there something wrong with Tommy? The most unexpected result in Miami so far. I can see him easily beating Stepanek in the next round.

Now it's Querrey's turn to beat Federer

It's not that windy. A little gusty at times but I've seen much windier conditions than these.

That's not a good excuse... Haas has trained in Bradenton for so many years, so he's suited to the conditions. Simplay it was a bad day... Good win for Falla though :yeah:

Haas has a terrible record in Miami, so there must be something about the event that disagrees with him, wind or no wind. I was half-following this match on the scoreboard and the games seemed to go incredibly quickly on both men's serve. One moment Haas was 4-1 up in the second, then he was off the court in next to no time. I must admit that the only times I've seen Falla play were when he was demolished by Federer at Wimbledon a few years ago and then at RG last year, so I haven't formed much of an impression of his game. Still, after last week's close encounter with Ljubicic, this can't be a total fluke.

As improved as he is, Haas always has a surprisingly poor result every few months. And this WAS a really bad loss. But then again, I've seen Falla play well before. He beat Davydenko last year at Wimbledon, albeit a completely inconsistent Davydenko who was all over the place and totally clueless on grass. :p

Oh yes I do remember that (thanks for making me relive that nightmare!).

Weird that Tommy can't seem to play well in Miami, he does so well just up the coast in Delray! Wonder if its the increased level of competition ;)

Time to regroup and rest up for Davis Cup (he is playing right? hmmm...)

Yeah probably. Haas has that type of game where he likes to go for winners (controlled agression like Federer) but doesn't have the crazy power. So on a quicker court it's not a problem because he can hit winners. On a slower court his "winners" come back.
