Someone slap Marat around the head until he starts playing like himself again.

Well done LaLo - the tournament is a prettier place with you still in it. :smooch: Marat - decide if you give a damn about playing tennis anymore and if you don't just retire instead of half-arsing it in every tournament.

This is second in a row for Marat. If Federer loses his first match twice in a row at a Masters tournament I would say the same thing.

6 losses in a row for Safin in North American TMS events. This poor run has lasted much longer than expected. He badly needs a good run at one of the major clay events otherwise he might be stuck permanently in this form.

If he doesn't get back into the top 20 before the end of the year, he may even consider retiring.

don't jinx him, now :)

well, this scoreline and the stats show that it could have gone either way...Marat being the stronger player, I'd have expected him to take advantage. Disappointing, but not because he's half assing it

This makes their head-to-head 4-1 to Lopez, all of his wins having come in straight sets and Safin's going the distance, so it seems more like a bad match-up issue to me. But then their previous matches have included plenty of 7-5 and 7-6 scores just like this one, it's obviously come down to Lopez playing the big points better more often.

Well in cross-court rallies his backhand is going to Lopez's forehand, not that that's a world-beating shot either.... I don't think Safin copes well with slice and dice (see Santoro), even if his opponent is Lopez who never looks that convincing when he plays the underspin backhand.

Yea just remembered the fact Lopez is a lefty and Safin can't handle slice that well.

03-24-2007, 02:05 AM
Lopez has beaten him at some big events too, the Athens Olympics and Wimbledon.... but Safin has been less than enthusiastic about both events, I remember he said tennis shouldn't be an Olympic sport shortly before the 2004 Games but still turned up anyway, which earnt him criticism from some on here. On the other hand, should we always take away credit from anyone who beats Safin just because he didn't show up/didn't care/had too much to drink the previous night?

RogiFan88
03-24-2007, 02:06 AM
If Maratski can't beat that lefty, I don't fancy his chances vs. the extreme lefty.

Don't worry Maria. I'm no Safin fan, but he's an asset to the sport. Marat is a very seasonal player, he plays really really good, then devastatingly bad. This is nothing out of the usual for Marat, so theres no reason why Marat should retire. Feli is the same, when he's playing good theres no stopping him, so don't feel too bad about this loss. Marat's still got a few years left in him:)

Marat's results post the Australian Open have never been spectacular. Unfortunately he hasn't shown us that he can be a genuine threat on either clay or grass, so I guess it's safe to say goodbye to Marat until the US hard court & European indoor seasons. Such a sad spectacle as he is an absolute joy to watch when performing to his ability. So another potential roaster bites the dust.

unable to break (1 out of 13) + no serve + huge errors at crucial times + broken after having just broken + unable to win tie-breaks = NO CONFIDENCE

and he's not going to get any losing R1 all the time.

It's been said before, and I'll say it again. Marat needs a Coach, a good coach who can get him through this and who Marat respoects and will listen to. And he'd better find one fast before he's back to # 104.

Still it is a shame to see someone who has one two slams be dismissed this way time and time again. Pity that what lies between Safin's ears continues to be a liability. I hope he can fix it, but it's pretty late in the game now.
