I don't want you all getting brainwashed with all the pleasant articles mirkaland posts about Federer the gentleman, I thought it's nice to have the other side of the coin

Source : http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_tennisblog/2007/03/roger_didnt_imp.html

"I must admit that I was sorely disappointed and a little concerned. First, Roger upon coming out of the locker room was approached (and I do not mean swarmed or overwhelmed) by fans, many of them kids holding out their giant yellow tennis balls seeking a quick Roger Federer squiggled autograph. Roger with his overdone security entourage in tow did not issue one signature and continued walking on.

"Okay, maybe he was rushing after having spent most of the day watching his NBF (New Best Friend) Tiger practice for the Doral and was concerned about the threatening rainstorm in Miami and not having much time to hit. Whatever! As the hoard of fans Pied Piper style followed him to his designated side court to witness with great anticipation some Federer magic we were again disappointed.

"No idea who was on the court with him – some young unknown player (who looked to be no more than 18) and some others who merely served as ball boys. So after watching a painfully unimpressive 30-minute practice session where, if someone who knew nothing about tennis and Federer, would put these two players on the same level (five shanks off the frame from the Great One) he sat down and prepared to leave the court.

"I thought to myself, 'Let’s see how he handles his exit,' where once again adoring fans eagerly awaited that precious RF signature and once again he and his entourage walked by acknowledging no one, signing not one autograph.

"Standing nearby was the Mystery Practice Partner (a very approachable guy) so I went up to him and asked, “Who are you? Do you know Federer? Are you a pro? Have you hit with him before?” The kid awkwardly answered that this was the first time he had hit with Federer, did not know him and he is a junior tennis player. I laughed and asked “is Federer really a nice guy?” to which the Mystery Partner said gushingly, “Oh yes.” I said, jokingly, “Well good, because it looked like you kicked his (derriere) in that practice session.

"What is up with Federer? After his ridiculous loss to Canas in Indian Wells I think he needs to take stock and perhaps take a bite of humble pie. It's OK not to win every tournament, but to crash out in the second round of Masters tournament where you are defending champ? Hmmmm. I recall an interview on the Tennis Channel where Roger was asked what is the most important lesson you have learned in life to which he responded, 'It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.'

”And that includes taking two minutes to sign an autograph or two. ‘Nuf said. Roger, I will send you a dozen Sharpies if that would help.

"Please do not use my name, but I thought perhaps this was worth sharing and, by the way, I am one of the biggest Federer fans on earth. But I'm also a keen observer of people and know that no one walks on water. For better or worse, in sports as in life, public image is everything!"

I gotta say, that did not sound like a fan.

I've been a fan of someone I was disappointed of (a TV star, nothing Tennis related), when I related the incident on a fourm you could TELL I was a disappointed fan, this is more like the gloating of a guy who tried for years to prove a point and finally managed, IMHO.

Back to the issue, he is human and allowed to have bad days where he doesn't sigh authographs, he definitly signed them after his loss to Canas.

Am I the only one that thinks it's digustingly arrogant to practice for Masters Series by:
a) Hitting with someone in their back garden who hasn't played competitively for years (no matter how good he was, a hit with Crap-Lo would probably be more productive).
b) Then hitting with a junior after you might have thought he'd learnt his lesson.

Come on Querrey, that might teach him :rocker2:

I find it sort of hilarious that someone's calling Federer's kindness into question in the same article that mentions him hitting with an eighteen-year-old junior he doesn't know, and not going wild and crushing him.

Seems odd to me.

Blogs are impossible to authenticate. They're inherently biased. This one doesn't seem any different. I suppose it doesn't matter- Federer could get a rubber stamp of approval by the hand of God and it wouldn't change the opinion of those people determined to find fault with him.

Sorry, but I'm not going to take an unprofessional blog entry by a biased writer seriously. Every player on the ATP, even the supposedly super nice ones, has been the subject of a fan story in which the fan was unhappy with the way that player acted towards him/her. If I believed all that crap I wouldn't like a single player on tour.

:haha: Have you even seen the way people swarm around the more popular tennis players? There is a reason the entourage is there, and it's not to "act big." And sorry, but he is far more likely to be mobbed by fans on the grounds of a tennis tournament than he is in some restaurant where not everyone there knows about tennis or about who Federer is.

You think tennis stars get hounded more than your average celeb. It's no different. no body is going to cut you, you don't need guard dogs for protection. That's a little extreme.

And my point was that to blow anyone off for any reason is rude. I don't care who you are or what you have to do.

In some ways it's fortunate there have been less of these types of incidents, given how exposed the players can be at tournaments - you go to Wimbledon and you see them wandering among the crowds as they make their way to matches on outside courts.

I just don't think tennis stars are anymore at risk than celebs and if they can fair the harsh waters of reality without but loads of security, I don't see why it's a problem for tennis stars. With that being said, I don't think that anyone on this board is under the impression that Roger is an absolute saint. However, we do know one thing. Oscar Hernandez. Although, he has only been asked for his autograph twice, and one of those times the fan thought he was someone else. And the other fan was GeorgeWHitler ?

I've followed Tiger Woods since he's junior days. In fact, I still get upset everytime he misses a makable putt. Yet, the only time I dared criticize him for sitting in Federer's box at the USO 2006, people accused me of being a Tiger hater. I just had to laugh.

In Roger's defense, wasn't that the same day he was mobbed at Doral and Tiger had to rescue him? Sometimes enough is enough. These players are human too, ya know?

This is a difficult issue. Ultimately I think that the fans should come first, because there wouldn't be any ATP tour without the fans. A part of the money Federer makes comes from the fans' pockets. So he should treat them good!

On the other hand, it's obvious that we all have some bad days. It's clear that Federer doesn't feel like signing autographs all the time. And that's ok. Still, an autograph and a picture can be an amazing experience for a 10-year old fan, something he will never forget. That's why I think that the players should do their best to treat the fans as well as possible in all situations.

What a ridiculous thread :cuckoo: Any Fed hater could have written that tripe. It could easily have been Adam or Jogy who wrote that  They are clearly in the minority as 99.9% of people who've met Rogi go on to remark on just how nice this guy is :yeah: Even the players. Can't say the same about the likes of Nadal though. Just ask people like PHM & Ljubicic. They'll tell you and I'd believe them before believing some anonymous crazy fan who expects players to spend hours every day signing autographs

Well, I was talking more in general terms. Everybody has their jobs and responsibilities. Tennis professional's job includes signing autographs while playing tournaments. Of course I understand that Federer is a nice man and he just might have had a bad day.

ummm, No. It's not their job to sign autographs. Where did you get that from  Do you know the number of players who NEVER sign autographs ? You'd be shocked. It's called courtesy that what it is. It's not a job they have to do nor is it a responsibility they have. Be thankful that these top guys take time out to do it at all given all the security hazards which go hand in hand with these displays of kindness. There are some weirdos out there

Of course he's trolling. He blatantly started this to get a reaction and people just couldn't wait. Thing is with trolls, they can only troll if you're willing to keep feeding them - and he knows that if he posts anything that suggests Federer is less than a total saint, many indignant Federer fans will stream in to be outraged. I think they like it almost as much as he does.

I do think he's very naughty and shouldn't start threads like this. But then, people don't have to take the bait.

Out of interest, if the blog was about how wonderful Federer was and how much time he spent with his fans, would people be making the same snide remarks about the validity of a blog entry. Me thinks not.

If so, Mirkaland would have dried his/her tears of emotion asap and posted it hours before you

Certain individuals on this site insist upon passing judgement on others, when in reality, none of you are in any position to critique. He who is free of sin, cast the first stone. Any takers ? I didn't think so.

With that being said, I don't think that anyone on this board is under the impression that Roger is an absolute saint. However, we do know one thing. He's possibly the best to ever step onto a tennis court, so let's try judging players based on their accomplishments on the court, instead of their behavior outside of it.
