The surface looks terribly slow (which is no excuse for Blake because it's still a hardcourt).

IW and Miami must have some competition with each other to produce the slowest hardcourt possible.

No way anyone is going to beat Nadal (except a super-duper in-form Federer) at this event if he plays well.

Conclusion: He better skip DC.

Huh? I am not following your reasoning.
Nadal is beginning to figure out everyone else and dominate on HC too. Blake and Nadal have very different styles. Blake is not as great a defender (fast, but not good at predicting opponents' shots and not good at going from defense to offense). Blake is more offensive; a _much_ bigger risk taker.

I always thought he was quite the defensive player. And yes rafas doing that now because he has changed some things and stop being too defensive and more aggressive and stop letting people run him all over the court.

So Nadal wins IW and now all of a sudden he's going to start dominating the hard courts, beating everyone in sight? I highly doubt that.

Also I don't think Federer needs to be ridiculous in-form just to have a chance at Nadal.

Youzhny is struggling also.

I think the slow surface has a lot to do with it (moreso for him than Blake).

Ball is kicking up higher for topspin/moon balls, which really pins a short player like Mikhail back.

Dominating doesn't mean winning every HC tournament (at least not for me). Dominating means, you just can't see him losing early to an average player. He's almost a lock to make it to later stages of HC events.

You added the "beating everyone in sight."

No body said that, but all the people who would otherwise spell doom for rafa are not having their best showing on hard, and well Rafa doesn't have any real worry when it comes to fed. So this might turn into another IW for him. And if all these hard court winners keep dropping like flies then I don't know, they better get their games together.

Unfortunately for those of you who like him, Berdych plays a LOT of silly matches. He's really all over the place in terms of consistancy. Fortunately, Roger does tend to take care of any roasters that happen to be on the top half of the draw. So, thanks in advance, Rog!

Wow James. Wow.

It's amazing what one year will do. Last year at this time, James was on the way up. Everyone thought he was magically the best American player. Roddick was slumping and taking early losses like this one. Now Roddick and shown that the first part of 2006 was a fluke, while Blake's trying to prove that his ever getting into the top 5 was a fluke. :help:

I don't know. He's just always been able to beat Nadal. It's about the way they match up.

If Blake had gotten through a round or two here I think his game would have picked up and he might have been ready to meet Nadal, but he hasn't been working himself into tourneys.

You might be right. But Blake is in such a bad way right now that the match up alone might not be enough to take out someone like Nadal. I don't know what his problem is but he should be worried.

I agree, he should definitely be worried. He's come back from worse though, and Roddick was in a similar place a year ago and made it back. I'm hoping it's just a short slump that will be cured soon...

It's pure speculation of course, but I don't really see him beating Nadal at DC unless he has a big result soon. He always chokes in DC and if Nadal continues to play the way he did in IW James is in even more trouble. I'd sure like that H2H to remain one sided though

Hey All,

The stats for this match looked pretty good for James. He just didn't bear down in the tiebreak and in the third. His serving % was pretty good - and he and Serra were tied h2h.

I personally think James was affected by his DC loss against Berdy. Up until that point - he had had a good showing. After that loss - his confidence, for the most part was shaken. Hopefully - he'll represent himself better against Spain. Never say never I always say. But as it stands now - he is missing more than hitting. His confidence is on the down slope and he isn't consistent. Again - I really think he was bummed out about the criticism he received for arrivng at the DC all late and what not - and he has not recoverd.

Also from the way it's looking - he'll be out of the top ten by the FO. But that's ok - because last year was his first time reaching it. Players that don't produce good results - end up where they deserve and are suppose to be. It really is not a mystery and is that simple. He can improve - but he and just like all others that want to stay at the top need to be consistent. Duh! He only has himself to beat up on and not his coach - and just as it should be - because tennis is an individual sport.

I agree w/the one that pointed out that he has won a tourney this year. Check out the below list. Only Roger & the X-Man have won 2 in 07.

"GET YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT - JAMES" "YOU CAN DO IT" "YOU MADE THE FINAL AT THE MC LAST YEAR FOR GOD SAKES - WHIPPING UP ON THREE GOOD PLAYERS"
