Still good enough to get into the main draws, let them retire when they want to (as much as I cringe to see a former Champion lose to a qualifier in Round 1 routinely)

As much as I hate seeing Kuerten like this, I respect his motivation and his perseverance. He has plenty of money, accomplished all his goals on the tour, so he can easily put the racquets down. But his passion for the game is too great to just quit without giving it one last, hard push, and I like that about him. He can retire whenever he wants to as far as I'm concerned. Same goes for every player.

Guga. This guy was a joy to watch on clay and show signs of brilliance on fasters surfaces (I'm especially thinking about his victory over Agassi in the Masters Cup final in 2000). He is one of the greatest claycourters of all time (top 4 in my opinion)
However he should bow out after the French Open this year to spare himself from any further embarrasment.

Mistaflava

Ljubicic and Gasquet should both retire.

One is too old, reached his peak ages ago and is an embarassment to tennis.

The other is a wannabe TOP 100 that has a pathetic following of fans and who will never be better than he is right now.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing!

In hindsight Kuerten should have retired after the 2004 season><..
*He won the Brazil event that year
*Made final in Chile
*Finished inside the Top #20
*Def #1 Federer at FO & made QFs there!!
~~
>> That was Guga`s last roll of the dice [in hindsight]..

%%.But he could always join the Senior Tour & have plenty of success there<:)

Guga should probably retire but it will be sad to see him go as well.

These guys clearly still love playing though so if they don't mind then why should we? Sure it's sad seeing great players struggle but they know what they're doing. I'm sure Guga realises that he's not the same player he was but he's playing for himself now. Maybe he enjoys the travelling and the way he can go out and play without pressure now.

aramis
03-23-2007, 12:26 AM
Agree.
Guga's doing it for the love of the game. The senior's tour is not the same as playing on the ATP. As long is Guga is happy playing, then he should keep it up. Who knows, he may pull another surprise at RG this year like in 2004. And people were telling him to retire that year as well.

shotgun
03-23-2007, 12:36 AM
Guga won't be happy if he keeps having first or second round losses non-stop. IMO, if he doesn't start to string a couple of wins together in the European clay season, he will either retire or take yet another break like he did for the past two years, as a way to escape and postpone retirement.

if someone says something like that,so we all have to worry about his mental health:confused: or he is someone wh doesn't even know a sngle thing of tennis:p agassi,i agree is not comparable to ljub but age-wise played until 36 and nobody said he's too old, then you say ivan is too old??? and as for richie,he's proven at least better than both nole and murray(nothing against them but i said that just as an example) to win 4 atp titles! has beaten roger at his best and has won haas and safin (two good players on tour) in previous years still at 20;) so he has more to explore in the near future!:wavey:

Man I so agree with you there. Arthurs seems to be a lovely person, but he's retiring anyway soon. The others are awful, Phillippoussis is a waste of space, he's going to get nowhere, he'll get a wildcard into aus opens and wimbledons, do decently there, and then disappear for the rest of the season. Same with Guccione, he'll only do well in Aussie tournaments. Mabye if the aussie players were a bit more likeable and better players, then i might be a bit more patriotic. (I did like Arthurs though to be honest)

Interesting stats, thanks.

Shows what a warrior Federer is that he's never retired, or on the flip side shows how lucky he is to have avoided injury, depending how you look at it. I'd be curious to see these stats for past players, the likes of Sampras, Borg and Laver in particular. Just to see whether it's true the great champions would rather die on court than give up.

Q. I asked James about this yesterday, wanted to get your take. I was wondering if you were surprised at how emotional Roger was after the loss or is that something that you can relate to?
ANDY RODDICK: Well, I mean, I think in sports you can certainly, you know, everyone can relate to being disappointed. I think the thing about, you know, kind of having to stay on for an awards ceremony and from what I read, I think Roger touched on it. Kind of going after a match, taking a shower, stretching, that's kind of all part of your routine to kind of cool down and to kind of almost try to grab a sense of perspective and get away from everybody watching for a second.
You know, when you have to go straight into the awards ceremony, you know, it's not easy especially after losing a Grand Slam final. I've been on the other end of that with Roger a couple of times. So I don't think it's surprising or out of the ordinary.

Q. What are your memories from standing there at Wimbledon center court having gone through that? Does it seem sort of surreal looking back or do you even remember those moments?
ANDY RODDICK: Oh, no. You certainly remember them. It's just that you're fighting between, okay, you did a great job and staying alive. You're playing in a Wimbledon final which is pretty great. But you obviously are disappointed. You're torn up. You don't exactly want to take loss that's Wimbledon final, that's for sure. So it is hard. It is hard.

I don't get why people say ____________ needs to retire after a loss. A loss is a loss, most players lose every week and tournament they play. It happens. It just means you have to get back on the horse and ride again. But threads like these are disrespectful to the players out their busting their asses playing the game we enjoy for our entertainment.

And all it takes is one good run a year to keep up the points and rankings enough to get enough money to keep making nice living out of tennis. Ginepri always makes an annual run to extend his career.

The only time I've seen retirement suggestions from fans that actually made sense was with Guga when it was obvious he was struggling after hip surgery and it wasn't going to go away. Otherwise, it's just your common case of forumers being arse clowns.

Roddick is fine, he is top 10 player and won a MS1000 title this year. Hewitt, though, should definitely retire. He wasn't very good at his peak (being a transitional champion when Federer sucked and Nadal wasn't around), but now he's akin to watching Dinara Safina mugging it up on court - absolute embarrassment.

Hewitt actually won a title this year in which he defeated Federer. He might not be as consistent as he was in the past, but if he can still win tournaments there's no reason for him to retire.

He is one of my all time favorite players. Look at his early years: almost perfection. He became number 1 at 20, won the USO and Wimbledon, I think he should not ruin his own career and life with injuries. It's clear that he's not able to win important titles, I wanted him to retire even earlier to not to make his career look mixed.
