Here I thought that the rainbreak would get this kids head together. He never had much "Tennis" talent. Just concentrated amounts of athleticism.

On the positive side its a great win for Simone in his quest for top 100.

He can strike the ball. The problem has been constructing points, adapting his game to the surface and the opponent he is facing. He does possess weapons so there is still the possibility that he might get his head together, get his game together and start heading towards the top 10.

Doesn't look like he's going to give himself too many chances to win big titles but he has plenty of years to pull off the surprise Slam win or steal a few Masters events.

But right now he is clearly deep in a slump, regardless of that Challenger title. Could be tough to defend all those points from Rome and Roland Garros. Perhaps he'll rediscover his form on the clay.

and playing from 15 feet behind the baseline and very very defensive...

Hopefully Gael can get it together at one point. I don't know what the hell he is thinking. Surely it can't be that hard to get him to play a little smarter instead of this erratic boom or bust tennis he's playing. :help:

Yet another overhyped mediocre player fails miserably to live up to any kind of potential.

Monfils is 20 years old, I'm not ready to write him off yet.

That being said, there isn't room for every talented junior at the top of the ATP rankings. Even if Monfils doesn't improve his current ranking, there's no shame in having a decent career in the top 100.

Are you serious? So if Monfils played 10 years on the tour and finished every year around 70-80 there would be no shame in that?

He's a top 50 player at the moment. Not all juniors get to grow up to be Roger Federer. They have to compete with their peers and try to dislodge incumbents who are usually playing well. It's simply the result of the competitive system.

If Monfils finished 70-80 on the tour that would be disappointing, but it's still a lot better than several thousand other players who play tennis professionally week in week out. We'd view him as a bust and that would be partially right. But we'd only view him as a bust because he came so close and didn't break through as a top player. There are plenty of other top juniors who haven't even come close to progressing to the level Monfils has reached. Just to name some Frenchmen, Julien Jeanpierre was ranked #2 in the junior rankings in 1998 behind Roger Federer and ahead of Nalbandian (3), Gonzalez (4), and Coria (5) not to mention a "what might have been" injury case in Vinciguerra (6). Who's lamenting him? Or how about Eric Prodon, #3 in 1999. Hey, he's a nifty futures player! Clement Morel, #3 in 2002? Well, I guess he hasn't really kept up with Gasquet and Baghdatis.

I'm not trying to argue that Monfils has been an unqualified success; obviously, he hasn't. I'm just trying to put things in perspective. Being a top junior isn't a guarantee of future Grand Slam titles. Even making it to the ATP tour should count as some sort of success; ask Daniel Elsner or Wesley Whitehouse about it!

Agree with Balerion... not every succesful junior can rise to the top and hey, Monfils is still very young and its the start of the season so maybe he needs time to adapt again. He will be back on clay soon and Im sure we will see better from him then. Monfils did win a challenger last week after all.

He has shown enough so far to suggest that he can still regroup and stay within the top 50 for this year anyway which is decent enough anyway for the reasons Balerion said above.

As for this match i am very happy for Bolelli who needs all the wins he can get to try and make top 100. Once we hit the clay season I hope to see him progress more.
