Apparently the draw is sort of out.... from an article in the Chronicle

"Roddick meets Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark, ranked 99th, and Fish faces fellow American Alex Bogonolov Jr., 115th, in the first round. Todd Martin, Brian Vahaly and Wayne Odesnik received wild cards into the draw. The four remaining spots will be filled by the weekend qualifying tournament."

Who is Carlsen and can he play on clay? :haha:

And funny people get your creative juices flowing :)

LMAO! haha i dunno who he is and neither if he can play on clay... but i guess it wont be that difficult to beat andy (on clay) so.. we gotta take everyone on count lol

OK I looked him up.... he's over 30 and had no even remotely significant wins on clay last year LMAO!!!!!!!

Kenneth Carlsen is an older Danish player. He was never even very good in his prime. :)

And Carito!! Andy does very well in this tournament. He beat Coria here on clay two years ago. I don't think the same would happen today though.

If not, then the Clay Court King (Andy) returns to claim his crown! :worship:

I think Acusaso is there.

He's the only real true clay courter that I noticed in the draw.

Andy needs to get competition with the grinders to see how to play them. It's a frustrating kind of game for him.

Well.... that is the very reason I didn't say Debbie.

I was thinking that we culd have the joke a trifle more subtle. Although, I know that subtleness isn't that popular on the Andy forum. :)

But Coria's not gonna play the claycourts this years. He'll wait untill montecarlo to come back :)

Anyways... go andy! (shall i cheer for him or it's just useless? lol)

Here's an article in the Chronicle about Andy trying to improve on clay
------

Surface issues
Roddick working to improve clay-court game
By DALE ROBERTSON
Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle
When Andy Roddick left Houston three years ago this spring, he was a gangly, precocious 18-year-old with a monstrous serve and a place among the top 50 in the world rankings.

He had just claimed his second ATP clay-court title in as many weeks and anybody who ventured to Westside Tennis Club to watch the powerful kid play knew they had seen the handsome face of American tennis for years to come.

But his bang-bang breakthroughs in Atlanta and Houston in the spring of 2001 weren't without a spot of irony. Roddick now chuckles at how he announced his career intentions to the world, winning those first two tournaments on what remains his most treacherous playing surface.

"Oh yeah," he said at the Nasdaq-100 Open last week, before facing Guillermo Coria in the final, "I'm awesome on clay. Let's play the match Sunday on clay ... I'm joking."

Roddick might have one of the hardest serves officially recorded, but even his 150-mph rockets can be largely neutralized by the slow, grimy stuff that stains the socks, exhausts the legs and numbs the brain. None of the mightiest players who preceded him, most notably Pete Sampras, could find a way to overpower the wiry, indefatigable dirt-ballers who routinely bedeviled them -- particularly at Roland Garros, the clay-court cathedral.

Roddick's prep work for his next run at the French Open, the only major his boyhood idol Sampras never won, begins this week at Westside, a place dear to his heart if not necessarily his tactics. He has won the Clay Courts twice, accounting for half of his career championships on that surface, but he hasn't had to beat any of the elite players from South America or Europe to do it.

Nor will he have to do that in 2004. No player in the field who comes from a country where clay happens to be the court of choice is ranked in the top 60. The legions of Spaniards are absent because the Houston tournament is opposite events in Spain and Portugal, far more suited for the jaunt to Monte Carlo the following week.

Asked in Key Biscayne if he knew what he could achieve on clay, Roddick replied with his Hollywood smile: "I don't know. I've only achieved inconsistency on it so far, so I really don't know. I mean, clay obviously is a challenge for me, but that kind of excites me.

"I've won some smaller tournaments but, I haven't had the results I've wanted in the bigger tournaments. That's something I'm definitely looking to improve upon."

Roddick has conquered the U.S. Open and likely will be a good candidate to win Wimbledon if he can catch Roger Federer, the consummate grass-court artist of the day, in one of his occasional mental funks. The Australian Open should be Roddick's for the asking as well.

Last summer, starting in Indianapolis and continuing through the U.S. Open, he won four tournaments and 27 of 28 matches, including 19 in a row in dominating fashion. That sizzling patch vaulted him to the top of the 2003 year-end rankings and, despite a semifinal loss to Federer in the Masters Cup at Westside, left no doubt about his hardcourts prowess. His first victory in the Nasdaq cemented his stature.

"This tournament was really good for me," he said last Sunday after beating the injured Coria, albeit by default. "I had been talking to you guys for the last, you know, probably three or four weeks about how I needed that big result to kind of put my stamp on the year so far. This is exactly what I was looking for."

With the Davis Cup tie against Sweden, also on concrete, looming this weekend, he hasn't spent much time contemplating his preparations for the French. Last year, after a first-round defeat, he fired his longtime coach, Tarik Benhabiles, subsequently joining forces with Brad Gilbert, who had previously re-focused Andre Agassi's wandering career.

In his mind, Roddick doesn't know if he can triumph over Roland Garros' unforgiving "beaten earth," but he's certain his talent is such that he's not supposed to be losing to anyone in the first round there. That's why he made the change, emotionally wrenching though it might have been because of his personal affection for Benhabiles.

Houston, then, marks the start of what figures to be the greatest challenge of the Roddick-Gilbert partnership so far: Giving Roddick enough of an all-around game to hold up during the interminable rallies required by the clay when he's opposite the likes of Juan Carlos Ferrero, Gustavo Kuerten or the emergent Coria, plus all the others who consider the French their Holy Grail of tournaments.

"What I want for Andy," Gilbert said recently, "is just to get him better and stronger, physically and mentally. If we do that, lots of good things are going to happen for him."

Nobody has questioned Roddick's work ethic, but youth doesn't necessarily serve him well in preparing for the rigorous French Open, two weeks of gritty, best-of-five hell. He can't just want to win Roland Garros, or ace his way to the top as he did at Flushing Meadow, when he hammered 123 aces. It's going to require an extra layer or two of commitment.

The Ferrero he pounded for his first Grand Slam championship in Arthur Ashe Stadium is a different opponent in Paris.

The Nasdaq run plus the emotions of Davis Cup, plus the significant effort he'll expend here, attempting to reclaim the crown Agassi took from in a three-set final last April, makes for a tiring three weeks. It's probably not the perfect way to steel one's self for the rigors of Monte Carlo, Rome, Hamburg and Paris. But Roddick scoffed at the notion he'll need to slack off at some point.

"No, man," he said. "That's tennis. It's just what I do."

ok the draw is finally out

First up, Carlsen, then Kendrick or a Qualifier. QF could be Melzer, SF Dent (but I can't see him making the SF on clay), or Todd Martin, or Squillari from Argentina

Haas, Enqvist, Pavel, Tursunov, Blake, Ginepri, Fish, Acasuso, Lapentti, are ALL in the other half.

I would say..... good draw for Andy.

I am getting a little worried about Andy's schedule. He's played so many tournaments in a row now. He had a week off between Memphis and Scottsdale but then it was IW, Miami, Davis Cup, Houston, and when is he going to rest. I'd rather he played Monte Carlo than Hamburg because that is the slowest of the slow courts. But, Rome would be nice. I just want him to go and play an be up against good competition.

i personally think Andy will skip MC. i think he'll play Houston, Rome, and Hamburg. and star, if Hamburg is the slowest of the slow clay courts, then wouldn't that be better:scratch: I don't want him to pull a Ferrero/Coria last year and turn into a clay court slut and then they can't come up with the goods at the end of the year

Carito_90
04-12-2004, 04:22 AM
I am getting a little worried about Andy's schedule. He's played so many tournaments in a row now. He had a week off between Memphis and Scottsdale but then it was IW, Miami, Davis Cup, Houston, and when is he going to rest. I'd rather he played Monte Carlo than Hamburg because that is the slowest of the slow courts. But, Rome would be nice. I just want him to go and play an be up against good competition.

I know.. the last thing i need is an injured andy :bigcry:

Deboogle!.
04-12-2004, 04:31 AM
Dirk, Monte Carlo was ALWAYS on Andy's website. ALWAYS. Since they put up the 2004 schedule at the beginning. They did change it somewhat once his fall schedule became solidified but I will reiterate, Monte Carlo was ALWAYS on the schedule. He did say that his clay schedule was still a little up in the air after he won Miami in that interview, so he might decide to pull out, but he's on the official entry list as Carito pointed out, so he'd have to decide that and pull out soon. But like I said, he played Monte Carlo even when that meant coming back over here to play houston and then going back. so I don't see why he'd skip it when the logistics are even better.

He's not playing St. Poelten so he will have weeks in between some of the TMS tourneys and RG to rest. I think he'll be ok, he's in great shape and after the amount he played last summer, I'm confident in him.

And Dirk please do not pull the innocent act on us, ok? What, do you think we have gullible and naive written on our foreheads?

tangerine_dream
04-12-2004, 04:55 AM
I don't care how much they suck on clay, these guys (Andy and Mardy) should play as many clay tourneys as they can now and learn to love it. Spain will destroy us in the DC finals (I'm already skipping over Belarus  ).

Well, say if JCF was out with the measles, and Moya hurt his ankle again, and then the unthinkable happened (the French beating the Spaniards), then the DC title would be ours for the taking!!!! :D

Well i think if the spaniards actually win the DC.. it wouldn't be that bad y'know..i luv JC and Carlos

The thing is that, lets see:

Belarus - Usa: it'll be played in the US so i guess they'll choose a pretty slow hard court.. similar (if not the same) to the one that they've chosen for the QF. Of course USA'll win (i mean... belarus beated us just because they that this increadibly fast surface and we didn't have our top ten on the team :O)

Spain - France: I don't need to give any details about this, everyone knows what's gonna happen

Final:

Usa - Spain: It'd be played in Spain, on clay of course... oh man... usa's screwed up

Those are my predictions

Roddick wants third Houston crown
By Manuel Moreno Jr.
Galveston County Daily News

Published April 13, 2004

HOUSTON – Andy Roddick was right at home over the weekend, playing the Davis Cup quarterfinals against Sweden in Delray Beach, Fla., just a short 15-minute drive away from his own backyard in nearby Boca Raton.

But nothing changed when Roddick packed his bags and boarded one of Jim McIngvale’s private planes on Sunday evening for the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships being played this week at Westside Tennis Club, his home away from home.

“It’s always nice to be back in a familiar place,” he said following a 30-minute workout Monday at the Gallery Furniture Stadium Court.

The top-seeded Roddick, in fact, had only lost once on the Westside Tennis Club grounds prior to last year’s Tennis Masters Cup, winning the Clay Court Championships singles titles in both 2001 and 2002 before losing last year’s title match to Andre Agassi.

Roddick’s list of singles wins at Westside Tennis Club also includes the 2002 Davis Cup quarterfinals against Spain.

“Thanks for coming back again!” one tennis fan blared out as he was greeted by a crowd of 20-plus autograph seekers following the practice session.

“I’ve always had a lot of fan support here,” Roddick said, graciously signing autographs and taking photographs as he made his way back to the players’ clubroom. “It’s always been fun to play here.”

Roddick, the defending U.S. Open singles champion, was practicing on red clay for the first time this year, preparing for his first-round match today against Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark.

“I’ve been playing on hard courts all year,” Roddick said. “Hopefully I’ll be able to adjust. I’ll try to get another hit in (today).

“I just want to focus on improving and keep winning matches. I know more about the game now than I did when I won here two years ago.”

Just in the Clay Court Championships alone, Roddick — currently the No. 2-ranked male player in the world behind Switzerland’s Roger Federer — is an impressive 14-1.

This tournament season, Roddick is an ATP-best 28-5 and riding an eight-match win streak, one that includes his third career ATP Masters Series title in Miami.

His most recent two wins were in the Americans’ 4-1 Davis Cup victory over the Swedes, where he also broke his own record by hitting a serve 152 mph.

Roddick, last year’s No. 1-ranked male player, is seeking his 14th career tournament title. He will play Carlsen in their first meeting ever at 7 p.m.

“I’m optimistic,” Roddick said with a smile.

NEELY --- I have an extremely random question for you. Do you know any German Country and Western bands? playing either their own C&W tunes or covering C&W standards (preferably in German)?

My friend Wynn is doing a musicological paper which touches on this subject, lol! And he asked me if I knew of any... :)

Neely

well there are probably not many... to be honest, I only know "Truck Stop", that's a German band, singing the majority of their songs in German... but their best time is already gone, they were much more famous in the 80s or early 90s... it's already long time ago since I saw them on TV the last time.

only thing I don't understand in your post is what the abbreviation C&W means

But I think their stuff is/was okay. They certainly knew how to entertain the people at concerts or other performances. (of course, that's only true for those who like that kind of music *g*)

Andy Roddick returns a serve to Kenneth Carlsen, of Denmark, during the U.S. Mens Clay Court Championships on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Westside Tennis Club in Houston. Roddick won 6-1, 7-5.

Roddick advances easily in Clay Court

HOUSTON - Top-seeded Andy Roddick saved his best shot-making for last in a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark Tuesday night in a first-round match of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Tennis Championships.

Second-seeded Mardy Fish met Alex Bogomolov Jr. in a later match.

Roddick won his ninth straight match and ran his season total to 29-5 after breaking Carlsen in the 11th game of the second set. Trailing 30-15 in the game, Roddick ran from one side of the court to the other and hit a forehand winner down the line to even the score.

After a net error by Carlsen gave Roddick break point, the two-time Clay Court champion hit another forehand passing shot for the break. Carlsen managed only one point in the final game as Roddick served for the match and took it at the second match point on Carlsen's forehand error.

Roddick liked how he set up the crowd-pleasing winners.

"I wish it was that easy to say I'm going to hit a couple of shots but it doesn't work like that," Roddick said. "I made him play a couple of volleys and that was the key. He was serving pretty well in the second set.

"You have to look at what set up those shots. I got my returns down and made him hit so I had a look at them. Luckily for me, I was able to capitalize on them."

Roddick's final serve in last week's Davis Cup victory over Sweden was clocked at 152 mph. He wasn't as powerful against Carlsen but he was effective. Roddick won 73 percent of his first serve points and hit seven aces.

Roddick has a 15-1 record at Westside Tennis Club that includes titles two of the past three years. He lost in last year's finals to Andre Agassi, who is not defending his title.

Carlsen appeared on his way to an even quicker loss when he faced triple-break point in the first game of the second set, including a double fault to go down love-40. But two Roddick errors and an ace by Carlsen evened the game. Carlsen held with an ace and neither player lost serve again until the 11th game.

Ok I did actually call someone from another Andy group during a few changeovers, so star, PM me with your cell and I'd be glad to do it again.

Andy looked very solid out there. Nothing outrageous (except for THREE DROP VOLLEY WINNERS ahem) but nothing bad. the first set took 19 minutes. The second set 7-5 sounds tough, but Andy never even faced deuce on his serve. Was never more than 30-30. He might've been down 0-30 at one point in the first set but no problems at all, ever. He was absolutely never in danger of getting broken lol. Carlsen has a nice game though, he dropshotted Andy a few times and Andy looked kinda uncomfortable moving on the clay.

There was one hilariously funny moment at 5-5 in the second after which Andy went on a spree where he won the last 8/9 points of the match. I'll talk about it in the writeup for RO.

So sorry star, but Thomas played horribly... I only saw his first set b/c it overlapped with Andy's match.

And Mardy.... just DISGUSTING. Alex played solidly but Mardy was just AWFUL.

And..... the crowd in Houston LOVES HIM. I mean.. it was well over 3/4 full for his 1st round match! I'd say 2/3 of the people left after his match.

Oh and Brad sat right in front of us with his wife (very pretty) and two kids and Doug. I know people say he's a jerk, but he was VERY nice to everyone who came up to him for autographs and pictures. teeehee

what I do not understand is that 2 hours before the match when he was warming up he was wearing GREEN shorts!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and we had another classic Andy ump moment :)

And..... the crowd in Houston LOVES HIM. I mean.. it was well over 3/4 full for his 1st round match! I'd say 2/3 of the people left after his match.

Oh and Brad sat right in front of us with his wife (very pretty) and two kids and Doug. I know people say he's a jerk, but he was VERY nice to everyone who came up to him for autographs and pictures. He also said hi/bye to people on the way out. Granted, his guy just played a good match and won easily, but still.

Ohmygod! Where were you sitting? Did you move down. And you have to tell all about the seats and the stadium and everything.

Brad loves attention. He's definitely a gregarious guy.

And don't worry, Deb. I know Tompa is awful on clay. :)

Anyway, he's on the downward side of his career. Any win from him these days is just gravy. :)

Well it was still too bad to see someone lose due to errors (like Mardy), as opposed to their opponent playing really well.

Btw I see Andy plays again tomorrow.... geez, making him play 2 matches by the time some other people even play their first? LOL

Oh and Andy shouldn't have trouble with Kendrick. The kid is good.. but well, he just shouldn't be a match for Andy. He's got a good drop shot though so Andy will have to be looking out for that.

Star, I sat in the real seat, they're great seats!!! And Brad was just a few rows down in the corner. Mardy's coach sat there too (and then JB came out to watch Mardy's second set, which he really shouldn't have) so maybe it's just a popular place since it's got quite a nice view.

I promise, I'll write more about the stadium and the atmosphere and stuff in my first writeup

Fedex, go away. I was at the match. Andy did not "barely pull it out" - he wasn't even taken to deuce on his own serve once. If it'd gone to a tie-breaker, Andy would've had no trouble, he was holding easily and was pushing Carlsen on every one of his games. Please.

But Kendrick is much better than Carlsen. He has a good serve, ground strokes, volleys, very well rounded game. And on clay that will really hurt Andy

Well I thought Carlsen played pretty well actually, especially in the second set. He has a very good serve as well, and he was fine at the net. I don't remember Kendrick volleying too much today against de Chaunac, all I remember is that he hit a few drop shots. Kendrick was streaky. He'd play well then play really badly. That won't cut it against Andy. I'm not saying Robert has no chance. But I think it'd be tough for him.

Perhaps Kendrick didnt come in often today, but i remember him Serving & Volleying alot against Andy at the Siebel Open. But this is clay afterall, therefore you must be more picky when to come to net.

heya, Andy didn't have that many aces at all. I think the AP article tangy posted said 7? Yea that felt about right. I felt like his first serve % could probably have been a bit higher but without seeing the stat, it's so hard to know.

One thing that was sort of grr were a couple of really just plain lazy backhands he hit into the net. Then he goes and pulls off some awesome shot on the dead run and you wonder how he could've hit the lazy shots lol but anyway it was nothing crucial.

I would give Andy's performance a B (with the third set against Bjorkman the other day an A+ hehe). I do think he'll probably have to raise his game a bit against Kendrick, but as he gets used to the clay more and more and settles down after DC, hopefully the other things will come.

btw, something I thought was cool is that the lines on the court are made with white tiles. Is that how every clay court is done? It looks kinda neat :)

Bunk, I am so glad to hear that the seats are really good. I thought it might be a little far away. I couldn't tell from the diagram. It didn't look very close. But I guess if some coaches are sitting close by, it can't be too shabby.

Deboogle!.
04-14-2004, 05:48 AM
Well it's not that they're right on top of the court, but the only seats that ARE really close are the mega expensive boxes. I'd say those corner sections are about as close as any commoners could possibly get ;) Plus the corner view is a nice one anyway, unobstructed and you can see the whole length of the court without having to move your head side-to-side. The people that were sitting around me said they specifically picked that corner section (and the side you picked is extra nice b/c the sun sets behind it so you don't stare into the sun  )

Hey, if the kid wanted to coast during this match, it's ok with me. He obviously could turn it on when he wanted to from your description of his taking over and wining the last two games of the match very easily.

Andy would hardly be human if he didn't have a bit of a let down emotionally and physically after the last two great weekends of tennis.

he most DEFINITELY turned it on the last two games. It was 5-5 30-0 and Andy had a big tiff with the ump. well not a big one, more a hilariously amusing one... but it got him fired up and he won the next 8/9 points to finish the match, and the headline of the AP article about him saving his best shot-making for last was true. Though the volleys he hit at the beginning of the second set were real purdy, he had one great winner on the run that put the crowd into a ROAR that just gave him the momentum to finish it up. I'm still sort of  at how full it was for his match. and how much it emptied before Mardy's.

oh the clay, yes it is nice!! But it was windy today and on the side court you sit RIGHT at the court..... it blows right into your eyes LOL! I think Andy is little tired after two big tournament win(NASDAQ and DC).

I knew Andy was gonna wear green. After i saw that VEnus wore a green version of her outfit, I knew Andy was gonna be on the same track. It was the same thing last year as well, when both Andy and Venus moved onto clay, they sported orange outfits. I must admit though, this green is a bit too muted, it should be just a tad more vibrant:scared:

I'm surprised Andy's playing today too, Jace. But I don't think his match last night was particularly strenuous lol! He didn't seem tired physically, Nishy. he seemed tired mentally. And that's totally understandable. Even though I want nothing more than to see him hold up the trophy on Sunday... this tournament is not a big deal at all in the scheme of things so if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen.

Naldo, I'm not a fan of green at all, but it looked ok in person. It was the pairing with the blue shorts that left a lot to be desired :)

4.14.2004 -

Andy arrived into Houston after an awesome Davis Cup performance against Sweden. If we can get by Belarus and Spain edges France; there will be a titanic battle for the Cup title in Spain.

Andy made a decent transition from the hard courts to the dirt. It’s always nice to come back to a place where you have played well. Andy is 15-1 here, his only loss coming to Andre in last year's final.

Andy plays Robert Kendrick tonight. I scouted Kendrick the other day, and he was serve and volleying, and coming into the net on almost everything. These two played a good match earlier in San Jose, so it should be interesting.

The kid does not get a day off, we thought that he would be playing Tuesday and Thursday, but the tournament had other thoughts. He loves it here so it’s all good!
------

I gotta say, the tournament scheduling is really weird. James Blake for example played his first round match on Monday and will play his 2nd round match on Thursday. Andy and Kendrick and a couple other guys played their first round on Tuesday and 2nd round on Wednesday.... that seems odd.

I think Andy is little tired after two big tournament win(NASDAQ and DC).

Well actually, the DC wasn't a tournament win. It was winning a round basically. Winning the tie versus Sweden. It can be counted as a tournament win though if the U.S. wins the whole shebang (wins the Davis Cup, by making and winning the finals).

Coming down from the high of winning the Davis Cup QFs to playing a clay court tournament that's becoming less and less a favorite every year IS exhausting. Here's what Andy said about it:

"Davis Cup is something I was looking forward to for a very long time," Roddick said. "It was emotional. To come down from that is tough. I wasn't feeling too good yesterday and today."
