Who's the best Current player who's never won a GrandSlam.

Is it Blake? Ljubicic? Nalbandian maybe (we all know he should've beaten Roddick in 2003 and Roddick would fit this category)....

TMJordan

Cañas, but it ends this year at RG

johnemms2003

And he is going to beat Nadal? Good luck with that my friend.

Stensland
03-21-2007, 05:29 AM
i'd say nalbandian, i think there was a thread floating around here somewhere saying he's the greatest underachiever.

ljubicic definitely play his best right now, there's no more he can do. he won't win a gs in the future.

past: R1OS :bigcry:

present: eeeeeh Oscar Hernandez, but it end later this year in the holy lawn of the All England Lawn Tennis and Crocket Club in Wimbledon...

how much stuff would he have to take to be able to do that? and how's he gonna cover it up this time?

Henman deserves inclusion as well.

I would not include Ljubicic with his career results at majors.

yep, henman's alright. i'd add coria in 2005 at rg. that was basically HIS grand slam, he owned gaudio until his mind gave him problems, just like baghdatis wasn't able to cope mentally with a five-setter against agassi during his last tournament. it's all in the head, not the legs...

johnemms2003
03-21-2007, 05:40 AM
Canas won't beat Nadal and here is why. yeah. He beat Federer but Federer gives you cheap points whereas Nadal beats u up and grinds you down. Don't expect Willy to come out and beat Nadal in 3 out of 5 or make that 10 sets. He might reach the 3rd, or 4th round though but something tells me he is destined to meet Federer in RG and Feds will put him in his resting place. Canas is good but beating Nadal? You got to be Bjorg good.

Philippoussis is another example of an underachiever with a lot of bad luck.

TMJordan
03-21-2007, 05:43 AM
3rd or 4th round?

Tell me who is better on clay besides Nadal and Federer than Cañas?

Cañas can beat anyone on any given day.

Ther are 4 quarters if he avoids them both he can easily make the semis.

johnemms2003
03-21-2007, 05:44 AM
Who's better on Clay? I'd say Nalbandian, Ferrer, and maybe Gaudio. Let's not forget Coria's coming back and Kuerton will be there too though he is not good no more.

zicofirol
03-21-2007, 05:46 AM
Philippoussis, rusedski and nalbandian. The first two close two retirment but still playing and from what they did in their career I think they are the best players not win a GS(currently) then Nalbandian because of his final at Wimbledon, #3 ranking and good performance in the majors, Lubijic has been a non factor in majors except for last year in Ao and FO, after that he's sucked in majors, blake has only one QF...

After Nalbandian, probably haas, Gonzalez also, QF in all 4 majors (losing at least 2 of those matches in 5 sets) and AO final, top 5 also...

I wanted to agree with Haas, but I simply can't after his terrible loss to Murray. Not that murray is not great, but Haas just played dumb stuff in the end. Murray was on one leg for God's sake!

TMJordan
03-21-2007, 05:50 AM
Gaudio is better on clay than Cañas right now? :tape:

I think I can beat Gaudio right now.

Also clay isnt even Nalbandian's favorite surface, he would not beat Willy at RG.

Philippoussis is another example of an underachiever with a lot of bad luck.

hmmm... i don't know about that one. you think he's an underachiever? i guess he pretty much did what he can, he pushed it to the max. final at wimby losing to roger is alright, but he didn't have much of go at the title back then (lost in 3 sets). besides that, what more does he have to offer? i don't think he ever came close to winning a gs final (lost badly vs. rafter in new york). plus: does he really have talent enough to be considered an underachiever? i doubt it.

johnemms2003
03-21-2007, 05:52 AM
Well, I said those guys cause they've been in semis and quarters in the past couple of years. We'll see. Listen, even Nadal can lose on a bad day. Hewitt for example can trouble anyone on clay even though he is not gonna win the whole thing.

johnemms2003
03-21-2007, 05:53 AM
I'd put Philli ad Karlovic under same catergory. So Philli actually overachieved. Hewitt underachieved in my opinion.

Mark Philippoussis. No question.

So much talent..

but haas definitely got what it takes to have a go at major titles. he has all the shots plus a solid service game (sometimes more than solid). considering haas, it's just a question of mentality and not freaking out during matches. he always tears himself down after important point. remember yelling at his coach and freaking out agains gonzo at indy a week ago, when he was leading 6:3, 3:1 and missing a return? how crazy is that?! and he's had loads of coaches over the last couple of years, apprently this is something he never got sorted out properly. this is the thing that keeps him losing the big games.

i would go with Haas & maybe nalbandian of the current active players
Philiipousis is an underachiever but i cant say he is among the best that haven never won a GS
Spain's David Ferrer is a player very much underrated
he is a solid top 20 players for a the 3rd year & he is almost invisible in the draw, moves steadily in the latter rounds & his game is not only effective on clay

03-21-2007, 08:03 AM
if haas did not get injured when he was 3 in the world just before Federer became awesome he would of one a slam.

It has to be either haas or nalbandian.

Bibberz
03-21-2007, 08:04 AM
Nalbandian. He's reached the SF of every GS. He's only won a handful of tournaments and he's never won a shield (although he did win a Masters Cup).

Easily Nalbandian - just look at his GS record.

Well, I mean no. probably the one who is considered as the best current player having not a title of grandslam would be 'proud'. but on the other side, it would be such a pain he even doesn't win a grandslam. and when he actually once reached the final? ooouch, such a sting.

Out of the current players, easily Nalbandian. At the slams has reached one final, 4 semi-finals and 5 quarter-finals. I doubt that there are too many non-slam winners in the open era with a better grand slam record than that.

Nalbandian. I would also agree that Coria should have won Roland Garros at some point.

Another big underachiever is Malisse. I'm not saying he should have won a grand slam, but he should have achieved a hell of a lot more than he has done.

Cañas can beat anyone on any given day.

Ther are 4 quarters if he avoids them both he can easily make the semis.

If Canas is so good on clay, how comes he has never gone past the quarters at RG and never won a clay masters event? That was when he was on the pills.

Now without them, he hasn't got a chance.

Personally, I think it's Davydenko.

why? i mean, he's pretty much peaking these days and he wouldn't even be where he is today if he wasn't playing every tournament that comes his way. he's a solid player, but gs? no way. he doesn't have the extra stroke that kicks his opponent's butts, and winning a slam withput anything special won't work.

I thought that Nalbandian would have by now. Would also be nice to see him commit more, get fitter, etc. Time will tell.

Nalbandian for me. He's been there or there abouts in the GS, but not taken the final step. He's beaten Federer in a 5 set Masters final so he's had the game to win at some stage.

zicofirol
03-21-2007, 04:24 PM
Personally, I think it's Davydenko.

but he actually needs to have a chance to win an SF match before he can be considered for the title, I mean everytime he goes deep in GS he does it by avoiding any top 10 player and once he meets up with a top player he loses...

you mean in 2004...I'd say Henman.

Thing is, the only time Henman could realistically have won a slam was Wimbly 2001. Coria was always likely to peg him back at RG '04 and in all his other SF appearances he was beaten by a better player. He really should've won Wimbly 2001 though.

Canas, hahahahahahahahahahaha. He should try to win a real event first :)

If he is the best on clay besides Nadal and Federer, where are his clay titles?

His wins: Highest Ranked Player he beat: Surface

Costa Do Sauipe: 27th JCFerrero: Clay
Shanghai: 28th Jiri Novak: Hard
Umag: 65th Volandri, Filippo: Clay
Stuttgart: 11th Gaudio: Clay
Montreal / Toronto: 2nd Safin: Hard
Casablanca: 71st Bruguera: Clay

So basically he hasnt beaten any good players in his title runs other than Montreal/Toronto

I have to hand it to him that week is probably one of the most impressive weeks ever. Federer, Srichaphan, Kafelikov, Safin, Haas, Roddick. Thats 4 numbers 1s, a number 2 and a number 9.

But anyway, I think that Nalbandian and Henmen are more deserving for this spot.
