He's playing the hopman cup with Sabine !

Oh man, I'm late for posting this. I've just read the previous posts  anyway...

He's nominated a few times for the "Deutscher Tennis Preis", I don't know when it's awarded?
http://www.dtb-tennis.de/index_19195.php
Nominated in the category Male player of the year (but that one should go to Haasi) and twice in the category Match of the year for his comeback against Melzer in Davis Cup and his win over Verdasco in Marbella.

(Philipp actually says in interviews that his best match of the year was the one against Djoko in Roland, afaik.)

(Philipp actually says in interviews that his best match of the year was the one against Djoko in Roland, afaik.)I looked up an interview he gave to "Tennis Times" to be sure I wasn't mixing everything up again and that's indeed what he said after Marbella.
I made screenshots, you can find it on http://www.tennistimes.de/ too:

Steeb tells him that those matches in Marbella must have been his biggest emotion ever on a tennis court and Philipp answers that the match against Melzer in the first DC round actually was bigger for him because he really didn't think after the first sets that he would be able to turn it around. There also was more pressure against Austria, while they had nothing to lose against Spain on clay.
Steeb: "But those matches in Marbella were you best matches ever in my opinion, don't you agree?
- Hmmm. I'd say I played my best tennis ever against Djokovic in Paris. I played a great match from the beginning on there - and against a very top player.
But I also played well against Robredo. Being able to keep up that level for one hour and a half, without any down, is a great feeling. And I played 3 very, very good sets against Verdasco."
He explains then what happened in the sets 3 and 4 against Verdasco when he kind of lost the plot, and that's why he actually sounds happier about his performance against Robredo than against Verdasco because he was more consistent. He says it is tough for him to stick to a strategy during a long match because he's a very intuitive player.
And at the end he talks about his schedule and the fact that he used to play too much in the past, he was entering tons of events and playing them all. He now knows that "less is more".

It's an old interview he gave during the summer, but maybe it explains why he's having a real off-season this time.

Haas is German player of the year, but the match of the year goes to Philipp, as expected (they picked his comeback against Melzer in DC - 6:7 (4:7), 4:6, 6:4, 6:3, 6:3, Jürgen was up 2 sets to 0, 4-2, 40-15).

I feel a bit addressed since nobody else posts/reads(?) here, but I hardly follow those contests in Non Tennis, Teddy, sorry...

It's not interesting, but I just came across that, he gave yesterday a tennis lesson to kids in the FORMAXX TennisBase where he trains (near Munich):
http://www.schwarzwaelder-bote.de/wm?catId=7833387&artId=14539437
Not much information about Philipp, it's more about the kids.
He's fallen a bit behind in his preparation because of a severe cold, so I guess it was not just a lame excuse in Salzburg.
He's leaving for Australia today, apparently, because it says he will spend Christmas in the air.
He answers some random questions asked by the kids (he can use up to 6 racquets in a match, he takes only 2 weeks vacation a year, he doesn't party much because he doesn't like the taste of alcohol anyway, etc.)
The mother finds him nice and really cool.

Well it wasn't enough this time :sobbing:

I voted for a Kohli forum and I asked for it - I figured I'd be more likely to post if there was an actual forum rather than a thread, but it wasn't enough  . I guess all that can be done is to make sure this thread is active :) :yeah:

Nothing new for us, he already is in Australia, fully fit again after having been a bit sick with a cold during the off-season and training hard, he sounds like he has high expectations for the Australian season (there sure is room for improvement at the AO!)
I was afraid he would have forgotten his good resolutions about his Weblog, but it seems he will try to update it.

Sabine just arrived in Perth too.

He's not a photographers' favourite! Can't find a decent pic of the German team, while there are loads of nice pics of the other teams.

Anyway, given his performance there so far, we won't mind the discretion too much. ^^
8th defeat in a row to Andreev and then it sounds like he was the weak link in doubles too.

"I guess today the drinks are on me for the team,'' Kohlschreiber said.
"She (Lisicki) did everything she could and I was the bad person today."
Andreev's singles win over Kohlschreiber was his eighth victory over the German in as many meetings but the 26-year-old Russian was at a loss to explain his dominance.
"I don't know, maybe it's the kind of style of his play that is more comfortable for me,'' Andreev said.
"Hopefully it continues like this with Philipp. It was a really tough match for both of us.
"We played some good points and I'm really happy to start the year with victory."

I hadn't seen he wrote again - even after a defeat, it's a nice effort from him:

Hallo an Alle,
Kohli
http://philippkohlschreiber.blogspot.com/
He had practiced a lot and it seriously annoys him he can't win a match against Andreev to save his life, he can't really explain it either.
He says the event is nice, a lot of activities for the players. But he would happily swap all this for a win, he sounds eager to do well.

At least he sounds perfectly fit. It will be their first match with Muzza.

(He says Muzza gave him a good spanking and is a serious candidate for the AO in his opinion.)

“I’m not right there where I would like to be. My off-season was not that great. The good thing was that I had two weeks for holidays and then after I got a virus for three weeks and couldn’t play. I was just lying in bed,” Kohlschreiber said.

“I took all the stuff to work on here because I wasn’t able to do it at home so at the moment I’m trying to get fit. I really like to enjoy every minute on court and there are some things I need to improve. I’m going to work really hard for three or four hours in a row so that I get used to playing longer rallies, especially to be ready for a five-set match.”

While Kohlschreiber is feeling close to 100 per cent physically, his match conditioning isn’t where it needs to be just yet and he will be working as hard as possible for the rest of his time in Perth, and then before the Australian Open.

“Overall I’m making too many mistakes and that’s the kind of thing that is normally one of the biggest pluses on my game. I am normally solid and can work good from the baseline, but that’s not working that well at the moment. That’s what I would like to improve,” he said.

“I have a game which fits almost every surface, but at the moment I feel a little bit slow on the court. I get a fast ball and it’s hurting too much if I have to go to the corner. I’m not moving well enough to get there and then especially I should be able to have no weaker side. At the moment I feel uncomfortable on the forehand so that is what I need to practice on.”

Kohlschreiber had a mixed history with his two Cup opponents so far. He had lost to Andreev all seven times previously but never faced Murray. He was pleased with his first set against the Brit, but not his second.

“Nobody expected anything from me really, even me I was happy that the first set was quite good. I was tough and came back from a break down, but then finally his higher level showed in the second,” he said.

“He was up a set and played really well to not leave me with any chance. If I could have made the second set closer I would have been happier, but it was too easy for him.”

Kohlschreiber follows the likes of Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Tommy Haas and Nicolas Kiefer in representing Germany in Perth, and he feels bad for letting down Lisicki so far. The Germans’ goal is now to not finish last in Group A and that will happen unless they beat Kazakhstan Friday.

“Sabine is playing really great tennis in the singles and mixed, and has won both matches,” he said.

“It’s a team combination and she gets always a little bit sad when she sees my singles and then we lose the mixed. She’s in great form and hopefully I can get a little bit better for the last match. We can’t go to the Final anymore, but our goal is not to finish last in the Group.”

According to the website they just decided not to play the doubles match because the Kazakhs had no chance anymore to qualify.

OK, next stop: Auckland.
I remember Safin being humiliated at the Hopman Cup too the year he won the AO (he was even bagelled by Sanguinetti), but Philipp has topped it with this year's performance. ^^

I've heard Andreev was awful indeed, but Philipp still takes the cake with his losses against Andreev and Golubev.

Nalby in the 1st round of Auckland, I hope it won't be in the middle of the night for us, they seem to have a nice livestream.
Philipp beat him once, but it was on retirement (MC 2007). Nalby leads 2-1 in the h2h. They've always had tight matches, though.

Same here! Quite a let down, I had never heard of his 1st round opponent.

6-4 6-1 against Bellucci.
"I played much better today," Kohlschreiber said. "I really like to play in Auckland - I have good memories from this tournament. The conditions were tough, with a lot of wind, but I've played here many times and I know how to adjust."

He wrote on his website too, but says pretty much the same thing. He played a "really good" match, loads of breaks, but his serve was better in the 2nd set. He talks about the tournament venue, very nice with the bar in the public gallery (must be special, Melzer mentions it too), and he says he gets nice support from the people in Auckland because he usually plays well there and knows a lot of people by now.

Gicquel now in the night session. h2h is 1-0 for Philipp (6-2 6-2 in Vienna in 2008).

6-3 6-1 in 53 minutes, way too fast, it was already over when I turned on the PC.
Serving stats are looking much better, only 1 BP against him this time.

Next up: Clément, Philipp leads 1-0 in the h2h (Munich 2007).
I won't be able to see it again, 2nd match with matches starting at 12:00.

The contest was something of an anti-climax with Kohlschreiber, perhaps surprisingly, unable to challenge his opponent's serve. Like Clement's previous victims, the German became increasingly frustrated at his inability to make an impression and imploded somewhat.

Er will ihn besiegen.

67(7) 61 63, it took him some time to get his bearings, but then I thought he was playing really well, loads of great passing-shots.

Sela now, it will be their first match.

Matches start very early in San Jose, Malisse-Stepanek at 9.45 am! They should have scheduled Philipp's first, he says the jetlag is giving him a hard time, he couldn't wait for his match to start yesterday because he wakes up so freaking early. Otherwise he feels fine, he says he was playing well in training in Munich.

Thanks! But he should maybe rather tweet in English since he already has his blog in German.

There is a short article about him in "tennis magazin" saying that he has a new management and that his new manager wants to "bring him closer to the fans", hence the many updates of his blog and now Twitter. The effort was very obvious indeed in the past few months. There's a lot of work to do to improve his image in Germany!

He says on his blog that he doesn't know Istomin. And that his 1st serve was the key in his opinion for his great match against Sela.

"Today I played so well - I think it's the best match I played of my life", said Istomin, the first Uzbek man to rank in the ATP World Tour's Top 100.
It was the first time I was watching him play and I was not impressed at all! I missed the first set, but I found him really poor in the 2nd set, I was wondering all the time how the heck Philipp had managed to lose the first set 6-1. And the 3rd set definitely was more about Philipp making big, fat errors at the worst possible moments imo - and not Istomin playing out of his mind.

Did anybody else watch it? Did you find that Istomin was playing beautifully?

Hewitt =Legend
02-13-2010, 08:42 AM
I didn't see the match but I've seen Istomin play a couple of times before and he's definitely nothing special. Has an alright 1st serve and can be hard to break when he gets rolling but the groundstrokes are pretty average and he doesn't have one big weapon. I think as well this was more Kohli losing this match than Istomin winning it.

Hope he can pick it back up in Memphis.

istomin was very solid in the first set and kohli was just flat with no rhythm at all. kohli played better in second and third set but eventually had his typical brainfarts that cost him the match.

But he might just be pissed off by his frustrating singles loss too, it looked on the scoreboard like another brainfart in the 2nd set, from 5-2 to 5-7. The serve stats aren't as good as last week, though (more DF than aces, Korolev had 15 BP), so maybe his shoulder was bothering him indeed. He hasn't given any news yet.

He wrote on his blog and doesn't mention his shoulder at all, so I guess he was just frustrated.
He says the surface in Memphis is pretty fast and he wasn't able to adjust at all. Korolev's very flat game gave him a hard time too. He had his chances, but was a bit unlucky then. He's pretty mad, of course, because he could have gained a few points there.

They didn't want to play.
Of course they would have been Kühnen's pick otherwise, it's not even a question.
I doubt we will get any explanation as the German tennis journalists are terrible and don't seem to try to look further than the official talk. Nieminen reported at the beginning of the year a conversation he had had with Petzsche and that there are some bad stories going on in German DC and he's so lucky that the team spirit in Finland is good when he hears this kind of things, etc. - so there must be some really serious tensions in the German team, it's probably the reason why so many guys turned down a DC spot. One or two would be "normal", but not 80% of the team (Zverev and Mayer didn't want to play either).

Kohli keeps saying everywhere, on his Facebook, his Twitter, in interviews, that the team spirit is great, really, as great as ever, so great... It all sounds a bit desperate.
Anyway, it's too late now, I hope Kühnen & Co will get the message and will be eager to sort out this BS for the next ties.

A portrait in L'Equipe today (I'll try to make a summary later - nothing really new anyway, but I thought it's pretty spot on):
Kohlschreiber s’y colle

Pascal Coville

The destiny of Germany is in the hands of "Mister K", the "German Tintin", a many-sided, puzzling elf. Who is he exactly? A very good player or just a decent one, unable to pass the big milestone? What do those phoney answers hide - a not very bright guy or a clever one, on the contrary?
June 2007: he cracks the top 30 for the first time with 23 years. A small format player, not very impressive, but he can find nice angles with his one-handed backhand. Worth a look, but no threat for the top players, even if he beat Roddick in Melbourne and Djokovic in Paris last year. He's never reached the QF of a Slam and his record isn't much better in Masters 1000 events with only 2 QF.
"If only I knew why I can't do better...", he sighs. He doesn't work enough, maybe? He vehemently refutes the idea: "I don't have any big weapon, I need to build every point. If I wasn't perfectly fit, I wouldn't be able to do anything." A look at his results confirms his statement, since he has won 7 of the 10 five-sets-matches he has played so far - includ. wins over Davydenko, Roddick and Verdasco. But he is a "one-shot rifle". "If only he could be a little more consistent on the tour, Kühnen laments. His Davis Cup record shows that he's good enough to be in the top 10."
A badly managed career, maybe? Unlike most of the German players, he hasn't his "Abitur" (the German high school diploma). "But I almost got it, he says. I quit school just before, when I was 18 years old. It was out of question at home to quit school earlier. My mother used to say: 'You have to stand on both legs, one in school, one in tennis.'" Two stands to avoid the fate of the father who was running a petrol station. Little Philipp vowed to never have to fill other people's petrol tanks. And found his escape on the tennis courts.
At the beginning he had trouble dealing with the way of life on the tennis circuit, though. Petra Philippsen (a German journalist) remembers how he used to ruin his image and was behaving off-handedly with his teammates in Davis Cup. "He was eating alone, like a star". He's changed his tack and adjusted for example the tone of his website which made him look arrogant, he admits it.
There's one thing where he has never disappointed, though: in Davis Cup. He won his first match against Oli Rochus in 2007 - "one of the biggest moments of my career" - and six of the next 8 matches, with a nice double win over Robredo and Verdasco in Spain last year. "It was a perfect week-end for me, but we lost. I would prefer the opposite to happen against France."
That's not possible: Germany will move up or go down with him. He knows it, even if he swears he doesn't feel any pressure. Before coming to Toulon he trained 10 days in Munich with the balls which will be used for the tie. "I'm ready to play 3 matches", he says. If he wins those 3 matches, he will surpass the famouse baron Gottfried von Cram who was beaten twice by the French. And all the doubts about his true value will fade away.

What a sad week-end for him.
Below par on Friday and he was the weak link in doubles, no energy, weak serve, his shots were not "cutting".
The really crappy circumstances with all those stories going on in the German team certainly didn't help either, but it was a bit worrying.
The question of the journalist on the DC website: "Philipp, such a shame you started to play 2 sets too late". ^^

Huge disappointment for me... I'm afraid that this won't turn his season around... I know Philipp is worth a lot more than being around No.30...

EDIT

I've just read the article, now, he must be disappointed as well. What's with the lack of stamina?? He recognizes it, then he knows he has to work out even more, right?

Truc
03-07-2010, 11:15 AM
His serve was the main problem this week-end, and it probably contaminated his whole game then. It obviously was on his mind all the time, he kept mentioning how draining it is to play whole matches with no 1st serve.
His service motion is a liability sometimes, it looked like he was netting every other 1st serve.

Gaël also wears him out with his game, forcing him to play too many shots in each rallye, it was the same in Metz. I don't think it's a stamina issue since he's rather better in 5 sets matches and in DC, but he seems to have trouble dealing with Gaël's power somehow after a while. Gaël said he had this impression too ("le jeu de Kohlschreiber matche très bien avec le mien, je suis plus fort physiquement").
But he looked lifeless and a bit lost in doubles too, while we're used to see him pumped up in Davis Cup.

Anyway, the French team was very good, the two potential weak links Monfils and Benneteau both were very solid, so it would have been a crazy achievement to win his 3 matches in 3 days, even if he had played as good as he can. His display was disappointing, but it's not his fault if they lost, there's no Kohli bashing in the German media.

:tears: Kohli at it again.

I have to admit I'm a bit frustrated as I've seen the whole match, seeing him recover from the loss of the first set and then totally dominate mentally his opponent, winning 9 games in a row.. and the battle began. However, he held three match points, and I was like "this is it, it has to be done"... so I guess I jinxed him  or was it one of you guys?

There were so pretty fantastic points though, but this match really reflects the article Fran posted on the previous page, with Kohli mentionning he now needs to learn to win these matches to go deeper in and reach the big stages of a tournament.

He doesn't sound too mad:
Daas war's dann für mich."He says that Nole played his best tennis on the very big points, and that's the difference between them and why he's still ranked at #30. He thinks he played a good match, though, fought well, never gave up. He didn't do much wrong on the MP, Nole stopped making errors then.

That's true, but he should have gone for it more, especially on that third mp. And it's typical he is okay with the fact he lost because Djoko played better on the important points. If he is okay with it, he will never win those. He should be utterly sick now...

I think it was at 63 22 when I posted in his thread and he started winning. Suddenly I was all optimistic. But when he won 8 games in a row I started to worry because Djokovic does that (lose a set in a horrific manner) and keeps winning at the end. He had his chances I expect Kohli to win their next encounter.

He must have been quite mad after the Nole match, after all, because he says in his blog he needed to take a few days off and went to LV to have fun and forget about the wasted chances. He arrived in Miami pretty late, but no big deal since he's seeded and has a bye in the 1st round.

His draw in Miami:
[8]TSONGA, Jo-Wilfried vs bye
CLEMENT, Arnaud vs GARCIA-LOPEZ, Guillermo
CHIUDINELLI, Marco vs MAYER, Florian
bye vs [28] KOHLSCHREIBER, Philipp

Not easy, Mayer just won the final of Sunrise in very windy conditions (similar to Miami) and said he's been playing his best tennis lately. Go Chiudi.

Mayer looked fit last week! The good thing if he plays Mayer is that they often practice together, I think (they belong to the same training center in Germany), so he is used to Mayer's weird game - even if it's really not that weird anymore.
Anyhow, I really hope he will play Chiudi because I'm still not over the match in Basel Philipp should never ever have lost.

He's entered Munich and committed for Hamburg, as expected.

Nice interview indeed! Although she didn't ask any of my questions. (I posted a few questions in a hurry and then I got an important phone call and couldn't follow at all the chat. They were bad anyway.)

I hadn't noticed he has never won a match in Miami, I'll be even more nervous for the Mayer match now. (Very tough draws in the past indeed, Philipp! I just looked it up, he played Dancevic and Bolelli the last two years.)

So typical again when he answers the question about a Kohli-Muzza final in Wimbledon - "I've learned in the past that it's not so good to say things like that, facing him in the quarters would be more realistic, I guess, and already awesome". Always this "I'm learning from my mistakes" thing, he's so eager to not sound arrogant anymore, it's quite cute.

Truc

A few things he says if you can't bother listening to the whole thing since it's pretty long (he's chatty!):

His two biggest memories are the Roddick match in Melbourne and the comeback against Melzer in DC last year.

He doesn't have a favourite tournament in particular, what he loves on the tour is to go to a sunny place when it's winter in Europe. So he loves the Australian tourney and also Indian Wells.

He can't really explain why he does so badly in Miami. Maybe the draws ^^, the wind, the fact that he likes IW much more and he doesn't enjoy coming over to Miami... He doesn't like going to all the parties, he's a quiet guy.

He started tennis when he was 4, but he was just playing 2-3 hours a week when he was young, nothing very intensive.
He's been training at the Munich TennisBase since he's 14 years old, so the girl says it's a long time and he answers he's like that, loyal and faithful, same for his long-term girlfriend, "when you're happy with something, why would you change?" - I found the comparison between the training center and the gf amusing.

I've already forgotten the rest...

An interview he gave just after the match - "I was just bad":

http://de.eurosport.yahoo.com/29032010/73/atp-masters-miami-kohlschreiber-einfach-schlecht.html

It's not very interesting, but here's a simplified translation:

- I was just bad. There basically was no match during the first 45 minutes. The first part really was plain bad, I just wanted to get out of there. I kept fighting somehow, got the re-break, won a couple of games and gave Tsonga a good fight. But on the whole, I must say that I was just bad.

- What was the problem at the beginning? Were you nervous?
- No, I wasn't. He took a very good start and I couldn't find my rhythm at all. I was simply making too many errors. It was weird for me to play the night session match on the Center Court, it doesn't happen very often. I was looking forward to the match during the day, but once there I had absolutely no feel for my game. This bad feeling persisted during the entire match.

- You saved five matchpoints, isn't it really annoying to not have been able to turn around the match then?
- It was typical of the match. On the last matchpoint I actually had a good chance to win the point, but I made another error, like I did during the whole match. I was fighting nonetheless and I wish I would have reached the tiebreak, but I just wasn't playing well enough to be able to turn the match around.

- What are you going to do now?
- It was the last hardcourt event, onto clay now. I will spend a nice last day in Miami, with some golf maybe and go to Southbeach. And on Tuesday I'll fly back home. It will take 1-2 days to become acclimatized and then I will start with the preparation for the clay season. I'm already looking forward to Monte-Carlo.

- Miami sounds like a dream to a lot of people, what about you?
- Most players rent a car here to visit the area because there is indeed a lot of things to see. I was at Ocean Drive, there are some fine restaurants, always with a "party feeling", of course, but at least it's special. Very good to take my mind off things. We were in a few malls too, it's a really great place for shopping. I also went to the cinema. I try to have fun during this event since there really are a lot of things to do in Miami. I also played golf twice. I worked hard, I was well-prepared, but I also had fun.

- Where are you going to practice now?
- I will spend 3-4 days at home and then go to Munich to start practicing on clay.

- Do you have a special goal for this year in terms of rankings?
- No, I had in the past few years, but I don't want to do that anymore. Of course I want to improve, but I don't care about the rankings. I've always said I want to crack the top 20 and I failed, so I don't want to set myself a special goal anymore. I want to play good tennis and maybe this way I will achieve it.

Philipp practised with Youzhny today, he was on and off and his coach told him: "so geht das nicht, du bist zu gelassen" (it does not work like that, you are too relaxed), but it sounds a little bit different in German, Youzhny was rather cool; while Philipp got rather embarrassed with himself, threw raquets and mumbled all the time, I liked his BH though.

I read the Sky commentator said he's injured, I hope it's not true? I have no sound here. He hadn't mentioned anything after his first round match, I only saw the usual boring comments (not bad for a first match on clay, next round will be tough, but clay isn't Murray's best surface, blablabla).

Is his coach Eriksson the one who was triple bagelled by Edberg in Wimbledon, btw?

a bit outdated, but I hope you'll like the story, both German Philipps practised today in MC, when Petzscher forced Kohli into errors with two gorgeous BH slices he said: Have you grasped the weakness? You have to play slice against me.:eek: They will play against each other in the next round!

Muzza was absolutely woeful, but Philipp was playing well, too bad he hardly got any credit with all the booing.

"It was almost a perfect match from beginning to end," the 26-year-old German said on Sky Sports. "I made not many mistakes and I had a lot of power in my game. I think I played really well today. I'm very happy of course. Yesterday after three sets I felt a little bit my adductor. But I feel great and such a victory gives me a lot of confidence."
Kohlschreiber admitted Murray had shown signs of rustiness in his first match on clay for the new season: "It is very tough for him. I was not missing much and I was playing with a lot of top spin," he added. "I knew that he doesn't like the high spin, and I think he really didn't know what to do. It was his first clay-court match so maybe it was the reason."

Sure was, Goodall was mocking him during commentary, then Konig says "didn't he beat you not long after that"

Kohli played well, the transition on to clay seems to have rejuvenated him a bit after his past month in the States. Murray played pretty bad but Kohli was very consistent, making very few unforced errors.

Rematch of IW with Picasso next, excellent chance to make the quarters here for the 2nd time.

philipp wins 6-3 6-4 over petzschner today so he's into the quarterfinal!

next up for him is david ferrer who he is 3-4 against although one of those wins for david is a walk over so he's technically 3-3 against him and 1-1 on clay. Looks like he's got a god chance of making the semi final atleast.

He wrote on his website it was not an easy match because they know each other so long (they're both from Bavaria and pretty much the same age - 1983/84 -, so they must have faced each other when they were kids already). The match was all about tactics. But he was feeling very well again. He says he had 13 BP in the 2nd set alone and was able to take only one (he had 6!) I love this kind of "personal match stats", at least you know it must really be him writing and not the admin.

I think he did well because we know he's prone to totally screw it up after a big win.
I'm pleasantly surprised by his touch, like against Muzza, he had some really nice counter-dropshots again, he won the point a few times when they were playing cat and mouse, which is Petzsche's strong point.

He only said that his game in the 2nd set was "very passable" and that he was having "too much respect for Nadal" in the first set.

As for his volleying skills, his volley can be a real liability sometimes, like in Toulon. But I also found him better in that area in MC last time, better touch at the net.

Yes, but that's because he was playing Nadal. The latter makes people's liabilities go weak.

Ted.

It was just a literal translation of the word he uses in German ("passabel"), I'm not sure at all how it sounds in English. "passabel" is slightly different than the French "passable", it's a bit more positive.

Yes, well the original meaning of the French "passable" is supposed to mean "sufficient to pass".. Only a cultural imprint made it so negative, because our system aims to the perfect.

I was in Madrid last year on Monday and Tuesday and it was no problem to buy tickets at the entrance every morning. Same as you, I didn't want to buy my tickets in advance because I first wanted to see the OOP to decide which court was the most interesting to me (most of the time I'm not very interested in the players scheduled on the Center Court).

In Monte-Carlo, for example, you really need to buy your tickets in advance, but Madrid was no problem. At least last year. It was really empty during the two days I was there.
