What a match, it was !! Haas was leading 4-1 in the decider, but Kohl got back to 4-4 and then, they kept tied till 6-6 and of course 5-5 in the tie break, 6-5 for Kohl, and the first one was the right one, game set and match.

What a solid level from both players, intensity in the rallys, wonderful volley game, perfect cross courts, and DTL, a very very good match, especially on Grass. Oh, and they were just serving awesome. :worship:

Kohl was just better out there today, he kept Robin under pressure, who started to doubt..
Kohl becomes mentally stronger, I think..

What's your opinion?

Next match : Blake
Philipp can win this match !!!!! :)

Hi everyone, I'm new to MTF, well actually new to internet forums, so if I did things wrong here please bear with me. I'm a huge fan of Kohli and can I just say I'm soooo proud of the way he's kept his cool throughout the tournament. Tomorrow's final is one I've been waiting for- two of my favourite players up against each other.:woohoo:

that's the problem when you are not seeded. he should've picked up some points from miami. :o oh well. I'll take verdasco on grass over wawrinka on clay any day.

by the way, have any of you visited his homepage. it's the most gaudy website i have ever seen. drains all my computer memory. definitely cool but just too much.

He can do it though, Del Potro didn't convince me so far this year, but he might be getting his grove back as he beat Bolelli who's having a very solid season.. Philipp should be careful then. Let's pray for the best outcome.

Just wanted to shout out how much I detest a game like Karlovic's. That's just sick. And it's all the worse the more effective it gets. Can't even imagine how frustrating it must be to lose in the TB all the time and just not getting a shot at the service games.

I don't like this kind of game, and I hate to see it working so well here ...

HoistDaColors
08-01-2008, 10:35 PM
I think Ivo's more than just serve. you don't see it because he doesn't need to show his other shots. his serves are enough to win points. however, watching him play is like death. He has not rhythm, he gives his opponents no rhythm. zzzz.....

anyways, good effort philip. too bad he couldn't get just a few more points in the tb.

HoistDaColors

i don't know if pk is ready. don't hear much news about him unless the german fans here report something.

he needs to just take it one match at a time. when he gets to nadal, he needs to believe in himself. he made nadal look bad in the first set in their match in dubai. of course, he couldn't keep up his level of play through out the match and eventually lost. in a best of 5, it will even be harder.

According to his website, his schedule now is:
Vienna (+ doubles with Kas)
Madrid
Basel (+ doubles with Kas)
Bercy

And yes, it was the shoulder at the USO, while he withdrew from the Olympics because of his thigh.
But his shoulder issue doesn't sound serious, Lugburz, nothing like Tommy. He doesn't sound worried at all in his "Weblog", just says he can't wait to go on vacation and do nothing for a while.

There was room for more again on Santoro's service game at *4-3, he gives so many points away.

3 errors in the row to give Santoro 3 MP, but he saves them all at the net.

Unbelievable, and Santoro is cramping (or acting a little bit too).

Looks like he gave the most embarrassing interview of the last decade:
http://de.eurosport.yahoo.com/21012009/73/australian-open-kohli-schlechter-verlierer.html?page=1&order=date#co
It's so silly that I don't really get his point. He means they shouldn't play best of five in Melbourne (or in Slams in general? I don't even understand what he means) and he's sure he would have won today if they had played best of 3, blablabla.

Is there a video of it somewhere? I almost have trouble believing he said that. It's the same journalist who published the story about him wanting more money than the others in DC, so she might make it sound particularly ridiculous too.

HoistDaColors
01-21-2009, 07:34 PM
oh boy the GM is going to have a field day with this "interview".

Truc...I wonder about it too and I want to actually see the video (even though I won't understand it).

Truc
01-21-2009, 10:47 PM
I haven't found any video, but articles describe in detail the press conference and how flabbergasted all the journalists were after a few questions and some stopped taking notes because they couldn't believe what he was saying, etc. The story is real, obviously.

The articles are devastating:
"Das Match und den Anstand verloren (http://www.derwesten.de/nachrichten/nrz/2009/1/21/news-106903348/detail.html)" (= he lost the match and any sense of decency)
"Zu viele Sätze (http://www.tagesspiegel.de/sport/;art272,2711983)" etc.
I wouldn't mind him being mad and a sore loser, but this is surreal. He's pissed they play best of five matches in Slams because it gives an advantage to players like Federer who have easy wins in the first rounds and the fitness becomes more important than the tennis skills then in his opinion. That's the most intelligible part of his rant. But I still don't get how he comes to the conclusion that playing best of five matches cost him the win today. ^^

Thanks Fran.

Before, I was a bit peeved that not a lot of german fans update with his information. Now, I understand way. I wanted to know more about him other than his tennis but I think I will tune everything out from now on and just focus on his tennis. There's obviously no redeeming qualities about him off court. :(

Truc, I was also devastated when I read the news article on Eurosport DE. I didn't notice the name of the journo though....

I can understand that he was frustrated and these comments were probably pretty much heat of the moment, but still what's the point of letting your anger get the better of you Kohli? Eurosport is doing some follow up and Kohli is getting loads of stick. Much as I adore Kohli I'm sorry to say he probably deserves the stick if that was indeed what he said...

I hope we will hear from him to clear this up. :)

Or are you saying Philippsen was not involved in any way with the first story about Kohli and the DC? I'm not saying the story wasn't true, but she wrote about it and her articles are/were not exactly flattering for Kohli.

Yes, it really was just a coincidence, sorry for the misleading comment, the first article I read about the AO press conference was the one on the Eurosport website and I immediately came over here to post it - sincerely wondering if the journalist was not trying to make him look bad because the statements seemed so incredible.

I haven't seen anything about it in the French media, btw (that's the kind of story they could have reported since there are tons of French journalists in Melbourne and it happened after the Santoro match), so his reputation abroad is still intact. But his little stunt was indeed all over the German news agencies...

Kohl lost to Simon today. 75 76, which is good in one sense : I feared that losing to Santoro in the AO might have damaged his confidence, and I said to myself "I hope Kohl isn't going to lose 63 62 to Simon". Hello Kohli fans,
I would like to know if there is a way to turn off the music and the commentary on Philipp's website (philippkohlschreiber.de). I would also like to know if he has an English website. It seems to be all in German and also no real useful info like where he'll play next etc. Fancy and all but he can't expect us all to have a clue about German :(
Btw, he looks good is that trophy pic with Monfils, content as well.

I don't know if there are English websites about him. As for his official website, I always use the direct link to his weblog because the website is such a pain in the neck indeed:
http://philippkohlschreiber.blogspot.com/
That's where he (sometimes) gives news about his schedule, etc. But it won't help you much since it's all in German.
He wrote again on Sunday. Apparently he sometimes checks his guestbook (if you want to leave a message there) because he thanks people for their messages. He says that he will try to give news after his defeats too in future. (He only writes when he wins indeed!)
He says he's been playing pretty well lately, Davydenko just played incredible tennis in Beijing. And he was a bit unlucky against Almagro, but he still has a good feeling and is confident for Vienna.
His arm was hurting a little bit in the past few days, but he was feeling better on Sunday already and it wasn't hampering him anymore in training.

"New Player Forum Request October / November 2009 (http://www.menstennisforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1134)"
We can ask again for a Kohli forum, chances are not looking so good given the lack of activity in this thread, but maybe people would post more if he had his own forum?
As Bashak said, I don't think there is anything in English about him, so it could make sense to run a MTF forum about him, if there is any interest.

I think he is very talented but maybe a little moody and inconsistent. I expect him to go further in a slam next year and this way he'll get more fans and then a forum. Metz final is ery promising for next year.

But he's beyond the "promising" stage, he's 26 years old.
Vienna is the perfect place to win his yearly title with the draw he has (easy win against Kindlmann today, Crivoi now, then Odesnik/Almagro...)

Almagro in the QF, it's perfect, he already gets the chance to make up for the annoying Shanghai loss.

He wrote on his website before the match, he says he preferred last year's surface. But he's still loving it in Vienna and he's been playing well so far. Glad to be in the doubles SF with "Kasi" too.
He sounds very eager to get his revenge today. He feels fully fit.

That was never in doubt, but still well done.

"Hatte wenig schlechte Matches"

http://www.laola1.at/128+M5c7a2edf615.html

He's so right when he complains about the German media.

Truc
10-30-2009, 04:25 PM
He says he hasn't won any title this year, but he's played very few bad matches (hmmm, he had a pretty bad patch this summer...) That's why he reached his best ranking (#22, he's #24 atm). "Some players take a big step forward, I take many small steps. The fact is that 2009 has been my best season."
This kind of improvement is rather mocked than celebrated in his home country though. He says that Germany is spoilt when it comes to sports. When Germany is not at the very top in a discipline, media stop talking about it and that's what is happening with tennis atm. "We'd badly need an absolute top player again. But we showed in Davis Cup against Spain that we are able to keep up with the very best. And we have a lot of good young players coming. I think the situation in German tennis is better than a lot of people in the media are saying."
The change of surface in Vienna is not a problem for him. "We make more silly errors because it's faster. But the point in tennis also is to be able to master difficult tasks."

What a shitty day.
I only saw the 2nd set, but he was playing pretty well, really pissed he lost in straight sets. Had a SP at 5-4 - and then a stupid fall in the TB which cost him a point.
Of course they also lost in the super TB in doubles then.

He asks in his Weblog if people are using Twitter and would like him to use that way to give updates, he says people should tell him in the "Gästebuch" if they're interested. He's really putting some effort into staying in touch with the fans lately!

Moreoever, if you look at the stats, his first serve percentage is higher. He has more winners (but more UEs)..

I thought this was a fine example of the infuriating treatment they get in the German media, since I hinted at it during Vienna:
http://www.badische-zeitung.de/tennis-5/die-deutschen-sind-die-verlierer-bei-den-swiss-indoors--21982189.html
It says this match shows why German tennis has been stagnating for years. Kohli clearly was the better player, dominating the rallies, had 14 BP - and he lost. "I never had the feeling I would lose this match until the very end of the 3rd set", he admits, displaying a fatal mix of auto-satisfaction and lack of will: "That's how it goes when one doesn't take his chances". He shrugs his shoulders and shows as little emotion as he did on the court. The way Kohlschreiber is considering his own career is simply scary. He beat players like Djokovic or Tsonga this year, "but I had already done it before and I was not improving further." He doesn't have big hopes in this regard anymore. His statement about being eager to keep on improving his game doesn't give much hope.

Alone the fact they're overanalyzing his statements after such a bitter defeat is BS. And then the bias to analyze anything he might say... Everything is turned into the proof that he's the biggest loser out there. What is wrong with saying he's always had wins over big names here and there, but didn't manage to break through though? He's just being honest here. Let alone the last sentence, which is a pure joke.

He wrote on his blog again after the annoying Chiudi match and says the match was actually quite good, he just couldn't keep the 4-2 lead in the 3rd set. This defeat really gets on his nerves. It's too bad because he had been playing well in the past few weeks. But he still feels eager to play and hopes to do well in doubles, even if they have a tough draw.

At least they won in doubles with Dlouhy and beat Erlich-Ram. :yeah:

They won yesterday in doubles, I saw the beginning of his match and he was playing normally then. I guess it was pretty big for "Kasi" to play on the Center Court against Nadal, Philipp couldn't afford to tank again.
But what an "effort" for his singles match on Monday... :o His girlfriend in the stands didn't seem to care either, she was watching the match together with Kas, they left after the embarrassing first set with a huge smile on their face and I don't think they even came back for the 2nd set. I wish I would have done the same, as the 2nd set was even worse. At least it was quick.

Oops, sorry, you're right, of course it's a Challenger - but in his case it feels indeed like an "ersatz" for his usual Austrian exho. He hasn't played a Challenger for ages, has he?

I remember Clément poking slight fun at his full-time schedule during the off-season a couple of years ago, when Philipp even played a tournament with French players in the French West Indies two weeks after the French Interclubs, after a little detour through St. Anton. His "off"-seasons often are pretty strange.
