What's the Difference Between Nadal's Old and New Service Motion?

They both take as much as a boeing takes to take off. He picks his behind still... So, what was the difference again?

I thought he had reverted to his old serve.

One is awful and the other is worse. That's the difference.

I'm not sure it's a serious technical question as you seem to focus more on his pre-serve rituals, that are quite annoying... anyway he's indeed back to his old motion, with shorter backswing, feet closer, more spin basically. A lot more consistency. BTW he just modified his motion on 1st serve, which was weird and led to errors. I think his confidence also comes from this.

Then he has followed Kylie Minogue´s advice: "Better the devil you know"

What's Rafa's best serving speed? Has he ever crossed 200 km/hr?

Yes, very recently, in IW. It was discussed in one of his post-match pressers. Can't remember exactly which one it was, but I'm sure it was posted somewhere on MTF.

Yes, it was in the match against Clement.

He served 131 against ferrero at IW, the fastest I've ever seen him serve.

Pity! Rafkullz' fastest serve is still 37 km/hr slower than Roddick. But I think he can improve his speed to as much as Murray's at least, sans loss in quality.

Murray= +218 km/hr on an average, Andy= +225 km/hr on an average. Federer=? Where does Rafa feature in this league?

Speed doesn't mean anything. Sampras never hit huge speeds but had the best serve ever.

All too true Glenn! Roddick himself being the case in point. Still, for someone of his muscular stature, not crossing 200 consistently is rather apalling. Of course, I'll like him anyway.

You have no clue about tennis, right? Serving is technique, it has nothing to do with "muscular stature".

'Muscular power' and 'technical ability' are two different things, and it's rather the latter than the former which is a necessity for great serving. It's not so much the speed that matters - Sampras is an excellent example of this, and so is Federer! - it's also the placing, the way a player can 'hide' the direction where he's intending to serve, etc.

With that said, I can only conclude that Raf's serving looked very good in IW - perhaps not all that 'stylish' ;), but very effective, which is illustrated by his very high serve stats. If anything, I don't think he should be working on getting more speed with his serve, but rather on getting it even more effective - if such is indeed possible! :D

It's more of technique. Roddick isn't the most muscled guy but check his serving speed. Best example is Justine Henin Hardenne who is so miniscule yet manages to serve in the same speed range as Rafa.(though Rafa's serve has more topspin)
