Donald "Wild Card" Young gets a WC into Miami qualies

I just looked at the schedule and saw Donald Young is playing today after getting a wild card. There are some good players (like Canas and Karlovic) in the qualifying, and its pretty cheap to go. I've never seen Donald Young in person, so I'd like to see if he's as bad as his record indicates or if he deserves any hype at all.

I don't think a wildcard into the MD qualies is too bad, as their making him earn his place in the MD instead of giving him wildcards into the MD like last year.

He did win 6 games, but managed to lose the 1st set anyway. Progress. :)

And now he is 0-3 down in the second set, so if you want to see him you had better hurry down there. . .

Sure. I watched him play Novak Djokovic at the US Open last year and he's certainly got talent. Capable of hitting first serves in the mid 120s, possibly even faster and his forehand is a decent shot in a wave the magic wand fashion. More like a player from the 80s or earlier than the power tennis we are used to seeing nowadays. Beautiful feel for the ball. The player that he most resembles I would say would be Rios.

He looked to be a talented junior playing against a man. For all his nice shots, he didn't seem to have a way of winning points. Contrast say Andy Murray who at times can look as though he's got no weapons and still end up winning the match.

The other thing to say is that he came across as being immature. Not professional. Not ready for this level of competition. But he's still not 18 till this summer and many top players don't break into the top 100 until they are 19.

I would say that the strategy of exposing him to the main tour at such an early age does not seem to have helped him. This year he has one final at Futures level and 3 Quarters. Plus one win in 3 matches at Challenger level.

In terms of potential he should make top 20 but as for winning Slams he's behind schedule and would need to put a lot of work in if that's to happen.

They spotted him years ago and he does possess amazing touch. But he wouldn't be the first player to look like an amazing player as a junior then find that it doesn't translate into success on the main tour.

I'd wait a few years to see whether he grows taller, develops physically and perhaps most importantly, mentally, before making a final judgement.

At the moment he's a reasonable player at Futures level so he's bound to lose matches at ATP tour level. In time he'll probably become a good player at Challenger level and then maybe he'll get better results when he steps up a level.

Never mind. Looks like the answer is no.Believe it or not, he took a set off Djokovic at the US Open. There was a big hubbub here about that.

Thanks! That's encouraging! I bet it was the first set because Novak only played two matches (I think) in Cincy as his hard court prep.

Not really, he completely disintegrated after that. He seems to be poor technically, physically, and mentally, not a great combo.
That's the only Young match i saw but his motivation was very poor as well, looked like Gaudio at his tanking worst.

I would rather give a WC to Koellerer by far.

I was half-sarcastic about it being encouraging. I mean, it took two years to win a set on tour and he has been handed so many wild cards. Although, they are giving him less now.

To be fair, the last time Donald Young received a Wild Card to an ATP tournament was...Miami 2006. He did get a WC to the US Open, but I believe he earned that automatically by winning a certain junior tournament.

2005 was really the year where he got tons of WCs that continued until his bagelling by Berlocq at Miami 2006. Since then, he has gotten some WCs to challengers, but that's mainly it. The sad thing is that Young didn't even turn 16 until July, 2005. The most advanced 15/16 year olds can sometimes do well in futures, but even that is unusual since they generally stick to the junior circuit. But to place him, at age 15, against the best players in the world is just terrible mismanagement. There's no guarantee that any top junior works out, but if Young turns out to be a bust (and he still has about 3 more years before we can brand him that), you'll have to wonder whether USTA's ridiculous rushing played a hand in that.

I went to the match, and was not impressed with Donald Young. His first serve looked pretty fast, but his forehand has way too much spin and his constantly miss hit it. His backhand basically just kept the ball in play. I didn't see any great touch or anything that separated him from any of the other players there.

At least he destroyed Sweeting this year and Sweeting is in the MD. :) I would say Young has a good chance to get a 300-400 ranking this year.
