And I remember some one saying that Rafa hasn't lost to some one younger than him yet is that true?

Last year they played at Roland Garros. Rafa was beating Nole when he had to retire. Then in the presser he said he was in complete control of the match and if he hadn't retired he'd have beaten Rafa. It was...amusing.

*sigh*

They played at Roland Garros, quarterfinals last year. Nole retired at 4-6 4-6. So he was not winning, but he then said something widely misinterpreted that haters feel the need to bring up right now :)

So Rafa leads their H2H 1-0 :)

I dont think that Nole hits flat enough or agressive enough to be "in control" against Rafa.

They both play with spin and with Rafa being the better mover I think Rafa will eat him up. I hope I am wrong though since i want to see a good match.

what the hell is with the calling him "nole", people here just cant call people their actual names..djokovic will probably get hammered, but if he plays to his potential he can win the match, but its unlikely.

Myrre
03-18-2007, 11:06 AM
It's not very difficult to grasp what Nole is trying to say. Almost every point ended with a shot from Nole. Either winner or loser. Nadal just kept the ball in play, so it was up to Nole to hit more winners than losers. Off course he then felt he was "controlling" the outcome of the match. It's normal for an aggressive player to feel that way when he's playing against a defensive player (pusher).

i remember seeing that, i think djokovic doesnt mean that.

i think he wants to say that the result of the match depends on how well he plays not nadal, i remember the stats, that he is hitting more winners and UEs than nadal, so he is the one winning or losing the points, not nadal...

today's match, if its a best of 3, then djokovic may have a chance, as i think nadal may be a little bit nervous at the beginning. djokovic, having nothing to lose, may take advantage in the first set if nadal has a shaky start....

but since its a best of 5 now, i wonder if he can maintain a high level to face nadal...

anyway, nadal in 3 is my prediction. (7-5, 6-4, 6-1)

Miami and IW is best of 5 because they last longer than week and there is no Slam following them , only Rome, Hamburg and MC were reduced to 3

Nole and his mouth :haha: maybe when he will start winning with serious opponents (in Top10) he will have right to said that he was in CONTROL

Right now he is IN CONTROL OF LOSING ALL MATCHES TO TOP PLAYERS :haha:

Robredo :haha: Haas wasn't Top10 last year as well as Gozno so you point is not good I am not also sure that Boredo was Top10 when he beat him

Yeah he is hungry for next spanking, he jsut make good use of :haha: draw in his section credit for him for doing so but really Nadal will show Nole where his place is

I just wonder what new will he came out with - more injury time outs , maybe in close situation he will lose breath and after whipping he will say that he was in control but was injured

Tommy was firmly in the Top Ten at that point, but Nole beat him at Wimbledon so I'm not sure if that's really a big accomplishment considering how hopeless Tommy has always been on grass. :o Still, a Top Ten win is a Top Ten win.

I think it depedns on Rafa's 1st serve percentage. If he serves like yesterday, this could be a shorter more one sided match than the Roddick one, but if he serves like he has been of late before IW, then it will be close.

"The next time he meets you, he's gonna drop the hammer on you"

It's interesting, it makes me wonder if Nadal will remember and try to make a point or if he will just do his thing. It seems hardly possible that Nadal could pump himself anymore than he already does based on some ill chosen words.

It reminds me of when Sesil Karatancheva said she of Maria Sharapova "I'll kick her ass in". It was during last year's something or other... Maria then schooled her 6-0 / 6-1. In the interview afterwards Maria made a joke about feeling obliged to lend Sesil a game. It was very, very funny. Women can be so cruel.:p

Widely misinterpreted? Which parts? The first bolded part or the second? ;)

So I think I made the right decision, unfortunately. I don't like to retired. I don't like this situations. That's why I'm really unhappy that I finished this way, you know, because I think that I was ‑‑ even though I was playing pretty well today, I was playing pretty well. I think I was in control because I think everything was depending on me. You know, how I was playing, result was like that. Because even with the sore back, I think I played equal match with him.

The first part, if you want an honest answer. But you don't, you want to be snarky. :)

Like someone said earlier, Nole felt he was controlling the match because he was the one committing the UEs, he didn't mean the world "control" like all of you have taken it as. He felt like he was controlling the outcome of the match with his racquet, is all. Of course we all know Nadal does that a lot, making his opponent hit an error. Nole was just verbalising that. But whatever, haters are gonna hate :p

I think the thing is he's a bit blunt - he generally says things and isn't overly diplomatic about it. I don't believe he intends to come across as cocky or arrogant but sometimes he does - it's just the way he words things.

I have to admit (I am a fan of his so I'm biased) but I do like the fact that he says what he thinks. It's funny and I like guys who show a bit of character and personality. Sure, he should maybe watch it a wee bit but it's a nice change to have the young guys coming up who believe they can beat the top guys, and who think they should be at the top of the game instead of guys who are happy hanging around at 20 in the world. Ambition is good, even when it manifests itself in ridiculous statements like this.

I think you are misunderstanding why were laughing at you fav here, it's not because he is blunt or not humble before he speaks, no. The thing is he needs something to be not humble about before he tries to be hubris about it

he was nadal's whipping boy in that match, then he retires and calls it in his control. No it's more about him being delusional than cocky, definitely not honest, that's what we are laughing at.

As I said - I find him funny because most people would be embarassed about making a claim like that after getting a beating like he was getting but he says it anyway. It's just something I like - very few people would have the brass neck to do that.

I like Rafa as well so it's not just because he did it against Rafa that I am defending him a bit. It's just something I like but I can understand why some people wouldn't like him because of it.

I just saw a video on YouTube from an old Nole interview and this is what persuaded me to make this thread.

I ask this question with genuine objectiveness as I really don't know enough about him to make a decision... is Nole arrogant?

In his match against Nadal at the french open he seemed deluded in thinking he was the better player. And recently he believes he has the game to be no1... he didn't say he trying to be no1, he believes he belongs there.

He has grown up a bit since then, people have gotten on his case enough about that incident, i think he learned his lesson. At IW he seemed very gratful and respectful towards Rafa and even hugged him after the match at the net.

I don't think he is. I think he's capable of youthful overconfidence and overexuberance but that's it. He's a kid, he's growing up and we should not judge him too harshly given these facts. I think he has a warm and engaging personality and has matured a bit since those remarks last year at RG.

when he said that he was ranked 60 something , now he is #10 so let's give him time to prove it to us, I certainly won't argue with him ;)

I wouldn't say arrogant - just a bit blunt and a little over-confident occassionally. I can see why he could come across as arrogant but I honestly don't think he intends to be disrespectful. He knows he's good and as long as he can back up the confidence the way he has so far, all the better. It only becomes a problem if he starts going overboard and can't back it up. I don't see that happening to be honest and he's been much better for it.

To be honest - when you hear him interviewed I find it hard not to like him. I do not understand how anyone would wish injury on anyone, let alone a young player just starting his career.

Ok, ok, I hope instead Djokovic finds another career path which fascinates him and so withdraws from tennis forever so I don't have to watch him anymore

It's a bit late to backtrack on your comments now, everyone knows these comments are just hiding your true opinion of him, just apologise and get on with it.

I think the commentators in that video clip were more annoying than Novak.

I've just watched it - it was very funny - Rafa's response - classic.

that clip is hilarious. like it's been said many times, a lot of players feel like they're in control versus rafa because they're the ones hitting winners while he's grinding away and winning the match

"I don't need to play anything special." wtf? hahaha beat him first on clay, then talk

Gilbert is pretty hilarious there

I am so glad Nadal beat Djokovic. Djokovic seems like a real jerk!!!
Though it would have been much more exciting if Federer had been in the final like he was supposed to!

The best part about that is the way Rafa handled the situation. He was like, "Dude, whatever you say..." Hard to believe that they are only about a year apart age-wise.

In Novak's defense, he was somewhat inexperienced in terms of big match play at the time. I don't even think it was so much a matter of being immature. It probably DID feel like that match was on his racquet. What he missed then, but probably understands very well now is that there is a reason Rafael Nadal is the best on clay. Alot of it has to do with the fact that he gets everything back - including balls that against anyone else would be winners. When you are forced to hit 4 more shots than you are accustomed to in a rally, your chances of making an error increase dramatically. Besides being vastly amusing, its no big deal, really.

AT iNDIAN WELLS when he was playing Nadal I thought I heard Djokovic say "fuck him" to Nadal. Anyone else hear it?Another person with me thought they heard the same.
