Andre Agassi to face Marcelo Rios!!!

Agassi Aces
03-15-2007, 02:20 PM
Just a quick note to say at the end of this month in Chilie, Andre Agassi will take on Marcelo Rios in an exhibition match. During commentary for ESPN in Indian Wells, Agassi's coach Darren Cahill said Andre was in the best shape of his life and Darren will be working with Andre next week to fine tune his tennis for the encounter! Should be great and it will be live on ESPN. Come on Andre!!!

C'mon 19 months ago Agassi took a set off Fed in the USO final and had him down in the fourth....gimmie a break...Agassi will crush RIOS.

Don't think he'll play on the tour again, but I could see him doing a Jimmy Connors and becoming a coach to quite a high profile player. Could also see him getting involved with the running of the ATP.

Should be no problem for Andre. Also, Andre was hurt in that USO final loss to Roger.

I was under the impression that Andre had a pretty serious and chronic back problem. Good to know he is feeling better then. If he's healthy, he shouldn't have any problem taking care of business.

Just looked at their H2H and very surprised to see they've only played each other 3 times. (Rios has won 2 and retired in the third when they had one set each)

I've heard Rios is in v.good form recently and there have been a lot of complaints from other players that he is playing regularly on the senior tour, as he is actually of the age and standard of the main tour. Haven't seen him play myself though, so perhaps that is an exaggeration???

I think it would be a close match.

How is Andre suddenly in the best shape of his life? If that were the case he should be on the tour again (although it would be awkward given his emotional farewell 6 months ago). Barring any physical problems, he's more than good enough to make it to the top 5.

I posted this on my site yesterday. They did a media call on Tuesday (?). It's an exo for Telefonica or something. It will be in Santiago on 3/30.

More interesting was that Andre said that he has no interest in playing on the seniors tour (not to mention prolly no time) but he would be interested in being (drumroll) DC Captain.

I love how people predict with such certainty that Agassi will beat Rios. Rios was a horrible match up for Andre- I'll bet most of the posters so confident in Agassi winning this did not see the 1998 Miami final between them- Rios was literally toying with Andre doing amazing things with the ball leaving Andre helpless.

The only one time Agassi did beat Rios was in the 2002 Miami semis and that was due to retirement on Rios' part. In his youth Rios was always labelled as the "left handed Agassi" a label which he despised and always gave him extra motivation when he was playing Andre.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about check out some of the highlights of that memorable Miami final:

It's too bad that Rios bailed out of that match... it was quite close, but Andre was starting to get the upper hand.

Rios definitely knew how to play Agassi, and even at this stage I would not rule him out in this match-up. Unlike most players, Rios was unruffled by Agassi's pace and absorbed it beautifully with his great hands. (On the other hand, Rios' domination over Andre is sometimes exaggerated -- they played too few matches to speak of a consistent pattern. Rios crushed Agassi once, and then they split the two other tight matches).

RonE, you are so right, Marcelo loves to play against Andre... the only Chino's loss vs Andre was a "tie", 1 set all Rios retired at Key Biscayne 02 SF due to tendinitis in his knee :p

Well this was in the early to mid 90's when Marcelo was just starting his way on the ATP before Andre was #1 in the world and a multiple slam winner.

And yes, he hated it because he always said his style is his style and likening his game to someone else's irritated him and understandably so since his style and genius were really unique.

I don't care much for matches between players who only recently retired. I mean, to see older players like McEnroe or the like return for some matches feeds into some sense of nostalgia I guess. And that's cool. But I don't really see the point of these type of matches.

Of course, for fans of these players it's fun to see one their heroes in action again. Can't blame 'em. And if Andre is "in the best shape of his life" he'll beat the crap out of Rios.

Rios didn't buy into the Agassi hooplah either. Someone asked him was it special to beat Agassi, he said "No, he's just another player".

The retirement was a funny one as well.

I agree. I don't like any kind of exhibitions. If the money goes to charity, that's great. But if I had to choose, I'd rather watch a couple of 14-year old guys playing for victory and giving their all. At least there would be some genuine spirit in that match. Both Rios and Agassi were great players and watching them play used to be a treat. But a match between retired players is not particularly interesting.

Believe it or not these two guys hate each others guts.. This will be as competative as any pro match..

Rios is hated by many pro tennis players for his attitude..
At one stage he accuesd AA of taking PEDs so, to say that these guys will not be taking this match seriously will be a big mistake.. This match is personal.. No doubt about it.

The Becker-Agassi 1995 Wimby and USO semis were two of the most enjoyable matches of that year for me precisely for this reason :)

Edit: Agassi-Muster 1996 US Open quarterfinal was another awesome match particularly the part where Muster was swearing at Gilbert and talking heatedly with the umpire

I don't think so. Agassi is a gentleman who is now happily retired. I don't believe that he would care about what Rios said years ago. It's going to another one of those buddy-buddy exhibition matches where both players hit "stunning" spins, hit between their legs and make the audience laugh. I think matches like this are as interesting as watching wet paint turn dry.

it's not carpet... it's hardcourt (also the bounce is high, so the surface is not fast at all) ... Arena Santiago's floor is made of cement ;) for being carpet, it needs to have wood under the surface... but just listen to the bounce.

There was something in the paper, yesterday, about students rioting in SantiagoCHILE
Police break up rock-throwers
SANTIAGO - Police on Thursday used tear gas and water cannons to disperse hundreds of rock-throwing high school students who repeatedly blocked traffic on Santiago's main avenue. Officials said 455 people were detained.

The demonstrations came on a date often marked by violence by far-left groups commemorating what they call "The Day of the Young Combatant," honoring two young brothers killed by police in a 1985 protest of the 1973-1990 dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet....Now, I imagine any exo would have been played far enough away from any threats, and under secure conditions, however, when I read the above, my mind came to Rios and Agassi.

Anybody there in Chile notice the disturbance?
