QF - Murray vs Haas - who will survive?

scoobs
03-15-2007, 10:13 AM
Both Haas and Murray have had very strong starts to the year. Haas is arguably in the form of his career. Murray's young career is still on an upward trajectory. They're both in form and confident and a SF place in a Federer-less half of the draw is at stake.

And they've neved played.

How will Haas handled the Murray variety? Will he stay calm and work his opportunities and attack the second serve to break Murray's service games down? Or will he get wound up and play into Murray's hands.

How will Murray cope with the Haas powerful, accurate hitting and confident play? Will he be able to force Haas into tricky positions on court or will Haas dictate the play too much for that?

Who will survive? :)

Hey scoobs - should have made the poll public.

I voted Haas in three anyway. I think Murray won't be outplayed, but Haas' awesome form will be the deciding factor.

I would say Haas since Memphis he is in form of life , but Murray is also playing very good anyway these section of the draw will give us Finalist from Haas, Murray, Djokovic

Is Murray going to sit back and let Haas dominate as he has in his first three matches in Indian Wells, or is he going to take the game to Haas as he did against Chela and then Nadal at the Aus Open?

Murray has the weapons to make it a close match. Whether he actually uses them is a different matter.

Norrage

Has Haas actually lost a set since his memphis campaign, except his match vs Fed? He is really in blistering form. It's really cool :) You'd say this form could challenge Fed but Fed already showed he just beats Haas in straights...

I think Haas will probably win though it will be close.

I think that Murray plays better when he is on the defensive and as such i think it would be a big mistake to attack Haas. Even the examples you give almost back this up. He just defeated Davydenko in straight sets without attacking but he lost that match to Nadal where you think he did attack (not that i remember Murray as being particularly aggressive in it).

A battle of the two ARodKillas. The winner of San Jose vs the winner of Memphis.

Should be a very interesting contest. The winner of this match will win the title, IMHO.

I want Andy to win. But I have a feeling Haas will go all to beat the 'youngster'. But as I say, I hope Andy wins - big time. Haas has had loads of chances in the past and he always blew them. Andy is on the rise and it's time for some new blood.

It should be Haas, obviously. If he stays confident and his bh DTL works as it did in the past matches, then he should be able to dictate the rallies enough, to take the win. If it doesn't, then he'll be murdered by Murrays passing shots.

C'mon lets root for the youngster with the game that is so fun to watch sometimes. I mean you never know what Murray is going to do. For some reason I just don't like Haas, I don't know...I just have never enjoyed him. I think this match will be alot of yelling and racquet throwing...Tommy will be frustrated by Murray's return and counter punching ways...I say Murray in 3 if he serves over 70%...no no just kidding. ;)

On first thought, Hass will murder him in 2.

But then again, I think Murray's varity, return of serve and retrieving skills may frustrate Haas enough for Murray to come through a tight match.

Hrmmm I'll say Hass lol.

Haas is not a good returner. If Murray's serve is on and he can take control of the rallies Haas will self destruct. Looping high balls to the BH will be the dripping wearing away a stone.

Haas to take the 1st set, Murray the 2nd and 3rd.

Well, first of all, I predicted that Fena would beat Haas. Otherwise, my predictions have been rather frighteningly accurate (except for Fed and Berd and Youzhy), even down to predicting the sets.

At the start of the tournament I predicted Murray v Fena, with Murray to win. Now what do I think? I do not know. I voted for Murray in 3, partly to stick with my original prediction. But Haas looked so good against Fena I am full of doubt.

Hope it is a great match.

Haas is playing total tennis recently, Murray's variety won't trouble him like it would other players, Murray will have to play big-time tennis like he did against Nadal if he wants to win, we'll see if he can up his game enough, I don't think he will, Haas' name is written all over the tropthy atm.

Haas is on superb form but can Murray cause another regular upset by taking him out at the quarters?

I think if you put their form together in this tournament then maybe Haas would have the edge but Murray has this amazing ability to up his game for the occasion.

If Murray beats Haas then I would say he is favourite to win this tournament, his first MS title.

i'm watching the Haas Gonzalez match and not taking anything away from Haas but gonzalez seems to have forgotten how to play when he got to the AO finals. He's just banging the ball back not building the points band generally not thinking out there.

Haas played well but the score I feel was a bit flattering. Haas made some silly errors but at the end of the day was more consistent in getting the ball back in play.

Haas will be tough for Andy but watching this match I feel it is game on - Haas is going to be difficult but no where near impossible which the scoreline against Gonzalez seemed to suggest.

Perversely, that makes me feel a bit better - he's pulled off some of his best upset wins when polls have indicated at this sort of scale that he would lose.

Exactly, everytime it seems he's expected his falls flat. So getting underwritten to the extent where people say he will get creamed is good. He always produces when he doesn't expect to.

Hass has been playing incredible this year & if I was forced to bet, then it would be on him. However Muzza can upset the odds easily if he keeps his head & don't choke at crucial points in the match. If he gets the chance then he needs to take it!

Haas has been playing the far better tennis all year long. Judging by that pathetic display of tennis vs Davydenko, if that repeats for their QF match, Haas will spank the living crap out of Murray. Andy really needs to be careful of his 1st serve % here, Haas won't let him get away with % in the 40's ala Davydenko.

Haas in straights I say, maybe Murray squeaks in a set.

I want Murray to win but the loss might do him some good. He's been awesome so far this year exceeding even his expectations. A spanking might help him from becoming complacent (not saying that he is) and spur him on to trying new things to gain an edge.

That said he might not get complacent - however if he loses I will see a silver lining to the cloud.

American commentators are sooo annoying, pmac and whatever the old guys name is. I'm getting so sick of the sex talk commentating on Andy's game that they are doing. As if they didn't get enough of it from Feds game now they've found their new messiah in Andy and can't let go.
