Howdy everyone;)

Okie dokies nothing do with Hewitt this time:eek:

>>>
What I want to know is how the Australian Circuit suffered a major decline in the space of 12-months from 1985--to--1986:confused:

##.I checked out the history vault files on the atp tour website & discovered that there were 8-tourneys in Australasia [incl NZ] in 1985..& then there was only 2-tourneys in 1986:eek:

What the hell happened there???

Of course I know that the AO was not played in 1986 due to Tennis Australia changing the dates, but how did we lose all the other tournaments as well???... Some of the tourneys came back after a the 1986 abscence but some of them never came back in any shape or form again:sad:

Was there a major downturn in the AUS economy from 1985 to 1986:confused:

How did we lose all those other tourneys?

Well Pat Cash:devil: was our only top player at the time~>> so maybe they decided to cancel most of the events to avoid seeing the checkered headband tantrum machine:eek:

In 1985 the last couple of months on the ATP tour was primarily played in Australia [October->December]:*@@*...

**Another interesting fact is that of those Aussie Tourneys~ 3 were indoor & 4 were on grass#^^#!! Of course today there are no more Aussie Tourneys indoor nor on grass!!

It looks like it was just a regular sort of decline in interest in the sport in Aussie. There are plenty of US stops that have vanished like Philly Indoors, etc.

You mean to tell me that the draw for the AO in singles was only 96 instead of 128???

AO had a smaller draw than the other three slams for ages. At one point it had 64 I think.

When Rod Laver won it in 1969, it had a draw of 48.

Not only that, but the draws were quite strange - like some lucky losers and qualifiers getting byes in the first round.

No wonder the AO's status as a slam came into question in its previous incarnation.

So from 1987 onwards did they have the regular 128 player draw?

The draw size has been 128 since 1988. Since the switch from grass to rebound ace in that same year, the Australian Open has been on a par with the other 3 grand slams. I'm not sure about before that though. From 1983-1987 the fields were pretty strong, so I would say that 1983 was the year that the Australian Open became a big deal again.
In the open era, from 1969-73 there were 48 participants, 1974-82 64 participants, 1983-87 96 participants and 1988-today 128 participants

1988 was the first year with the 128 draw. That's the 1987 draw - http://www.itftennis.com/mens/tournaments/drawsheetbyRound.asp?tournament=1010004419&event=

Seems strange to see some qualifiers getting byes while people who got in on ranking didn't.

Oceania is a difficult place to get to (long trips, shocking time zone difference), makes sense to limit the Australian tour to four weeks.

Some non-summer challenger events in Australia usually get a very poor field.

To lose all those tournaments within the space of 12-months I think there was more than a decline of interest to blame;)

Maybe tobacco sponsorship [Marlboro] being banned in AUS had something to do with it:confused:

The irony is that AUS won the Davis Cup in 1986 [the same year we lost all those tourneys]

Also Pat Cash`s career was just peaking [AO final 1987/88, Wimby 87]

#@@#.The thing that saddens me is that we don`t have any indoor tourneys left in AUS anymore [at one stage in the mid 1980s we had 3!!].. Also Sydney Indoor was on the verge of being awarded TMS/ Super 9 event status [long history of superstars won it~ McEnroe, Connors, Becker, Edberg, Lendl], but once that fell through the tourney collapsed altogether:sad:
