Diabolical match from Blake.

Benneteau deserved to win in the end.

The first set from Blake was atrocious - he just kept whacking away and sprayed the ball every which way but the blue.

Blake got better as the second progressed, broke back twice from dropping serve, but couldn't move ahead and played a pile of shit tiebreak that was so bad it was comedy.

Pressure from defending finals points + the draw opening up was, I think, a decisive factor against him. He didn't come into the match in the right frame of mind at all - he needed to be solid and businesslike. He was anything but.

Julien was solid until the end of the second set approached, then he couldn't hold the break advantages he took twice but played a smart breaker and let Blake self-destruct.

This is why James isn't a bigtime slam player and major champion.

Right here - I could use this as a model answer - this match.

This is what he does. When there's pressure - of points to defend - and expectation - that he could do something big in a big tournament with a draw depleted of big names - he puts in a match like this.

It's unfortunate but that's the way it is.

Hey All,

James sucked big time, yet as they say - he wasn't ON, and just like Roger wasn't yesterday. It really is that simple. It amazes me how some love to take pot shots at players they don't like. Really elementary and petty schoolish stuff- indeed, and some more stuff. No one can win them all of the time. The tour is deeper. Players realize more than ever that there is big money to be made. Players practice and are trying to get better. They are trying to improve.

James came out flat and left flat. It was not his day. I mean really! Roger had more UEs than James. They were missing more than they were hitting. James didn't face any break points in his previous match. In this one - he kept missing. He was going for too much. He wasn't in the right frame of mind to keep the ball in play - or at least start at that premise.

Benneteau has improved a lot, and good for him. He deserved his win. Again - easy as 1+2. but some on this board love to hate. Some love to tear players apart, when it is not them out there trying.

If James falls out of the top ten - then whatever. He will live to see another day and match. He will not deserve to be there if he falls out and just like many others that may fall out. The tour is DEEP!

I think the winner will be between Haas - the two Andy's or Gonzalez. Everyone has their day(s). And this was one of James' bad ones. He is not trying to cure cancer. It is just a tennis match. And he has made more money than any of us have in the last year - I'd bet big bucks.

"CONGRATS - BENNE" "SHAPE UP IN MIAMI - JAMES" "TEAR 'EM APART - ROGER"

Put a fork in him, Blake is done :o. After such an incredible year last year and also a nice push late in 05 I would have never expected this kind of disaster. I always knew Blake wasn't a world beater and was slightly overranked during his top 5 stay, but saw him as a solid 7-10 ranked player. With play like this, he deserves to be back in the 20's :o. Hopefully he pulls his head from his ass soon enough.

I disagree with those people who said this IW is a bust. I'm loving it. Fed goes out, which almost never happens so the excitement of who's gonna win the title mutliplies by like 272017303782. Ok Hewitt goes out to Tipsarevic, but Hewitt is a shadow of a shadow of his former self so no biggie. Safin is always Safin and even at the height of his game bows out early on several occasions. Who else lost early? Blake today and Berdych lost 1r but he's always inconsistent and not that big of a name yet anyways. Roddick, Nadal, Davydenko, GOnzalez, Ljubicic, Nalbandian, Haas, Gasquet, Murray, Djokovic, Ferrero and others are all still in it. Very entertaining stuff!

The main problem for James is that he is not in form, so he loses.

When he gets some form he 'll start winning again.

He lost today because he moved very bad... not because it was a mental aspect .

I don't know. Maybe he's the "dumbest" player to get to the top ten, but he's mentally stronger than a lot of other guys with similar talents. He has to be, or he wouldn't be top ten.

Wow a lot of people already writing James off, but people soon forget that in '06 his best ever career season he lost in the first or second round of tournaments 11 times. I think it's too early to say "he'll fall out of the top 10" etc; until at least the summer hard court season. I mean after Miami he most likely won't have any good results until the summer. He sucks on grass (although his game is great for the surface), and his play on clay is mostly a joke.

James Blake, as has been previously stated, is simply one of the DUMBEST players in recent memory. His shot selection is horrid...his total lack of conscience...his lack of strategy...his inability to even CONSTRUCT THE MOST BASIC of points...  And he actually went to Harvard...

Did you see his attempt at 1-5 in the tiebreak? Plain and simple: a mental midget...with little to no heart...sad...truly sad...

well said.

I don´t like to beat a dead horse, but I agree. I always thought his game is one-dimensional. His shots are ok, but if his opponent is playing better, he can never seem to turn it around, change tactics, vary his shots etc. He keeps playing the same game, and if it works, good. If not, he loses. That´s why he is a good player, but will never be a great player.

2nd went to TB? wow, Benneteau most have choked couple times before winning. he had a break in 2nd twice.
Correct, but the biggest choke was yet to come.

Blake's performance in the TB was laughable. He was far too rushed; he served a double fault first up while taking no time to even compose himself.

Benneteau was the worthy winner.

Of course Blake just closing his eyes and swings and has no strategy, this looks great when it comes off, but when it doesn't anything can happen. This is not exactly news.

13/16 seeded players in the last 16, that's not that bad when you look at it now. But Blake :smash:

The main problem for James is that he is not in form, so he loses.

When he gets some form he 'll start winning again.

He lost today because he moved very bad... not because it was a mental aspect .

Also Julien played pretty solid.
Of course movement is related to your mental state. If you are overly stressed or tensed, your muscles react to it and it can affect your movements.

Blake's loss is an upset, but not really a surprise. I always expect one of blake or ljubicic to lose early. There's always one of them who underperforms. It happens, but they're still up there. I would wait for their fall before saying they're over (if that ever happens of course).

I am just watching the highlights and has anyone else listened to the crowd. Cheering Benneteaus unforced errors, groaning when Benneteau plays well.

The highlights have just finished and there is barely a clap for Benneteau.

Didn't you know the MTF rule? It's only the French, Spanish and South American crowds do that, this doesn't happen anywhere else.

All crowds are like that when their countryman plays.
