French Oral Exam - Un peu d'aide s'il vous plaît!

04-02-2004, 04:11 AM
Hey all :)

On Monday I have my French oral exam and I can choose the subject myself. Since I want to be able to talk quite fluently and enthusiastically, I am thinking of talking about tennis (doh  )! Since my inspiration is completely gone at the moment and my days are packed with studying anyways (just had four days of tests in a row, all of which I had to study for.. ugh. And today's the grand finale for this week, namely a huge literature test which I had to study loads for, but I still don't know what I'll get asked.. I'm sure she'll manage to ask just that what I haven't studied ;)), I was hoping that you'd be so kind as to help me with just some useful sentences (it doesn't have to be basic French; some harder words and sentences will only help my grade.. I can memorize, you know ;)) about tennis in French. I know, I know.. I should be able to do this all by myself (and I think I can..) but every new angle and every little bit of help is very much appreciated!

If you do this, I'll really appreciate it.

Merci d'avance de votre gentillesse ;)

CooCooCachoo what kind of stuff you want to say in your just want to say you like tennis...and talk about tennis in me here lol i got some time off now so i can help you a bit ;)

CooCooCachoo, I see you're coming from the Netherlands. So you should be able to receive, as well as me for example some French TV stations.
If you want to talk about tennis in your oral exam, I'd advise you that you watch some tennis matches on a french channel to be more familiar with the french expressions about tennis.
Do you want to talk about your favorite player or tennis in general? I think that could be done with proper preparation as you are allowed to choose the topic on your own.

Sorry, concerning telling you some harder sentences or words, I can't help you. I was probably too bad in French for that

I feel that you will do fine. Good luck! :yeah: :)

Thanks for your help Neely. It's not likely that any matches are scheduled on the French television the next days, but I watched at times in the past (e.g. France - Croatia this year) and I have looked up some of the terms. I just would like, just to be sure, the translation of certain useful words (terre battue, démi-volée etc.) and, especially, expressions. I want to talk about my favourite players, what I think of the Grand Chelems :p and such. Tennis in general basically. It's not as if I want to talk about Tommy Robredo or Karol for fifteen minutes, haha!

Perhaps the translation of these sentences would come in useful:

- I like him, because he shows no emotions on court. He has a pokerface.
- Tommy is a very complete player. He plays well on all surfaces.
- Wimbledon is characterized by traditions, such as strawberries with whipped cream.
- I like players who play serve and volley, but they are almost extinct.

I do regularly watch TV5 or La Deuxième and my pronounciation is good and so is my grammar, but I just fear it won't come together on the moment suprème ;) But that is just my nerves (I hope!).

--- Bump! ---

Also, the translation of 'backhand' and 'forehand' could come in handy ;)

Hi :wavey: CoocCooCachoo here some translation for you. Unfortunatly I'm almost always watching tennis in english and I used english words when I talk about tennis but I’m pretty sure those translations are pretty accurate. Maybe french people on the board can confirm...

Le coup-droit= forehand

Le revers=backhand

Le revers à deux mains= two hands backhand

Le service = serve

La volée= volley

La demi-volée= half volley

Une balle coupée=slice

Le lob= lob

Un amorti= drop shot

Un arbitre de chaise= Empire

Un coup croisé= crosscourt

Une faute de pied= foot fault

Une manche, un set= set

Un jeu= game

Un jeu décisif =tie-break

Le tableau= draw

Les têtes de série = seed

Hope it help! When I got a minute I'll translated the other stuff you post earlier!

Je l'aime bien parce qu'il ne montre pas ses émotions quand il joue.

Tommy est un joueur qui peut tout faire. Il joue bien sur tous les surfaces.

Wimbledon a beaucoup d'anciennes traditions. Une de ces traditions est la vente des fraises avec de la crème chantilly. Il faut absolument les prendre en visitant Wimbledon.

Personellement je préfères les joueurs qui jouent service et volley. C'est plus excitant de voir ce type de jeu.

Let me know what else you need translated ;)

Lol Ilhame i just did a translation...ok anyway I will also post mine..maybe it can help him LOl

Perhaps the translation of these sentences would come in useful:

- I like him, because he shows no emotions on court. He has a pokerface.

J'aime ce joueur car il cache très bien ses sentiments sur le terrain il est donc difficile de savoir dans quel état d'esprit il est. (there is not really a french word for pokerface..)

- Tommy is a very complete player. He plays well on all surfaces.

Tommy est un joueur très complet. Il joue très bien sur toutes les surfaces.

- Wimbledon is characterized by traditions, such as strawberries with whipped cream.

- I like players who play serve and volley, but they are almost extinct.

Je préfère le style de jeu service-volée. Malheureusement, nous ne retrouvons plus beaucoup de joueurs sur le circuit qui se distinguent par cette façon particulière de mettre la balle en jeu. Cette tactique consiste à suivre son service d'une monté au filet. Cette façon de servir permet alors d'attaquer immédiatement l'adversaire au filet et ainsi terminer le point très rapidement. Max et Tim sont des joueurs qui se distinguent par cette tactique de jeu.

If you want a text (to memorize), i can translate it. Here or by PM, as you want.

Thanks for your help, all! I think I will manage now ;)

04-03-2004, 06:28 PM
Tommy est un joueur plutot complet et c'est pour celà que son jeu se développe sur n'importe quel type de surface que ce soit terre-battue, herbe,...
C'est également pour cette raison qu'il n'est pas considéré comme le joueur typiquement espagnol qui reste au fond du court pendant la toute la durée de l'échnage. Cette attitude quelque plus "agressive" s'est surement développée davantage lors que ses matchs de double.

Hope it's not too late
