David Nalbandian won’t say present
ESPN
http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/story?id=222779
BUENOS AIRES (AAT) – Gustavo Luza, DC’s captain, informed that the player David Nalbandian won’t be able to be part of the team that will go to Minsk to play for the 2004 QF against Belarus, because he hasn’t recovered from his ankle injury.

Nalbandian was in Buenos Aires today, he didn’t train and was tested in the CeNard by the DC medical team of the AAT headed by Dr. Javier Maquirriain. The diagnosis was: syndrome of friction on the back of the right ankle. He has a board (don’t know the actual word for it) to immobilize that part.

that is HUGE loss and very frustrating news

I know! Calleri will replace him for the single, and now Luza's choosing a partner for Arnold. I see this hard for Argentina to win the QF.

its such bad timing and couldnt happen at a worse time, but i would hope Calleri and the team are motivated now and want to prove they can get through 1/4 without Naldo, dont be too dispondent, i fancy it will be close but argentina will take the final rubber.

Here is another article from a Cordoban newspaper. Their web-site is www.intervoz.com Sorry for my bad translation - just getting so depressed about all this bad news - when will it ever get better?

Yesterday, just two days before taking the plane to Bielorrusia, where the national team will play in the quarter finals of the Davis Cup, the player was removed from the team by the captain, Gustavo Luza. Nalbandian, injured his ankle in February against Morocco, and was given a medical check-up by the Davis Cup Team medical body of the Argentina Tenn Federation, headed by Javier Maquirriain. The diagnosis of his injury is a syndrome of later friction of the right ankle, and has forced him to be out of the game for the past two months.

David's brother Javier, who is a member of his Team, says that it is the last part of the recovery. He says the ligament and bone and cured and only the joint is left inflamed. They need to wait another 10 days for this recovery to be complete. "The recovery of such an injury as this takes two to six months, and David was cured in the minimum term", added Javier. According to a member of the Argentine Federation's Medical team, the injury has become complicated by an inflammation of the joint that gives a different pain to the original one that was caused by the initial tendinitis. The recommendation is clear, - to do one week or 10 days rest and rehabilitation.

Having retired from Indian Wells and Miami, David had returned to training but the injury became inflamed again and did not finish recovering

It will get better eventually, all he needs is to recover fully and that none of his fans get down on themselves because he is not playing at the moment.

I think they're talking about Cañas or Chela for the replacement. I hope Cañas can make it, what do you say?

jazz_girl

Juan Monaco will replace David! I love it!

Alvarillo
04-02-2004, 11:02 PM
I can't understand how Monaco replaces Nalbandian instead of Chela ...
I Think Monaco hasn't ever played on indoors carpet ... and Chela is playing well and has more experience, also he plays doubles well....
can someone explain me why Luza never calls Chela for the davis cup? problems between them????

jazz_girl
04-02-2004, 11:54 PM
He called Chela and he turned it down due to some family issues. Cañas has a knee injury, so Luza decided to choose Monaco, and I like it ;)

Action Jackson

As for Monaco, I don't think he will play any matches, it looks like Calleri is going to be the main man in this tie. I think he seems to be the kind of guy to lift to another level when he is playing DC, I will never forget this demolition job on Ferrero, hopefully he can do that in Belarus, at least he won't have the wind troubling him.

Gaudio will never play DC again, and Zabaleta has a bit of heat with Luza and the other two would have been better alternatives, good for Monaco.

At least David won't have to worry about hard surfaces for a while, and I think it might be some time before he comes back, I bet he won't play in Monte Carlo. I want him to of course, but I am doubtful.

Chris Seahorse

If they have picked Monaco as the fourth player I think it means Calleri will be playing singles and doubles. Im pretty sure Monaco will only play if they is an injury or a dead rubber but great experience for the kid.

Yeah, that's what they saying. Calleri will play 3 points. Good for him!

Well i just gotta say that nalbandian is a fuckin asshole... i mean, i never liked him.. he plays really well or whatever, but he always has an excuse for not playing! and i'm so fed up with that. I mean, he's always saying "okay, i'm not gonna play this tournament so i can play the nasdaq 100" then "oh i don't feel okay, i'm not gonna play the nasdaq so i can play the davis cup, i promess i'll be there!" and now "no i'm not playing the davis cup, i haven't recovered yet" COME ON DUH! SAY IT FROM THE BEGINING "NO, I'M NOT GONNA BE FINE TO PLAY THE DAVIS CUP" BUT DON'T WAIT UNTILL THE LAST DAY TO SAY IT!
Gosh i'm so damn mad at him, he's such a dumbass.

Anyways.. now with coria's injury.. gosh i'm so worried about it, u won't even believe it! i can't wait untill friday to know what's gonna happen.. i mean, argentina HAS to win, we cannot lose! not before argentina and the us play the semifinal here, in argentina! (so i can see andy :) ) I swear i'll die if they lose... i've been waiting so confidently for argentina and the us gettin to the semifinal.. that i wouldn't stand any of both losing!
Hopefully everything will go such as i want to.

But whatever, back to the topic.. oh right, nalbi is an asshole, hell yah! (go monaco :) luv ya!)

btw.. What's the problem with Gaudio?

Have u watched last year's semifinal against spain? if u had, u shouldn't even ask.

Excuse me, but it's not his fault he's injured, and if he said he was gonna play was because he thought he was gonna be able to make it. The medical team told him not to play because his ankle injury hadn't healed.

Hi guys - thought you might like to read this article from a local Minsk newspaper at the week-end. The paper was printed on Sunday, which is why Coria is still mentioned as going to Davis Cup.

And Carito - can I just say that I think you are being so unfair on David - he is the most patriotic guy you can possibly imagine - he will be devastated to miss Davis Cup. Of course he is sorry to miss the event playing for his country - it is not HIS fault that he is injured, - so please don't be mad at him - that is so unfair. How would you like people to be mad at you if you were ill and couldn't do something you really wanted to do?

Anyway - the article. Apologies for my translation!

ARGENTINE GUYS ARE AFRAID OF MAX!!!

Until the start of the Davis Cup battle, the South Americans are
enjoying Minsk. They seem to like looking at the local Minsk girls
and are enjoying sightseeing trips to places of interest relating to
the Second World War.

"I admit I don't know anything about Belarus" - said Lucas Arnold,
"Absolutely nothing." And this was obviously true, because he arrived
at the airport wearing only a T-shirt!

They are staying in the 4-star Hotel Minsk (the best in our country)
and have already started training, except for Calleri, - he sat out
the first training session, sitting at the side of the court drinking
Indian tea! The Argentine "danger man" David Nalbandian will not take
part in this battle as he still has problems with a foot injury.
Guillermo Coria should be here on Tuesday.

Said Lucas Arnold: "Belarus are a very strong team, especially
playing at home in Minsk. The statements that were made by Voltchkov
don't concern us at all. In my opinion, players should play tennis,
not speak"

Our star player Max Mirnyi said: "I don't think, the match against
Argentina will be any more difficult for us that the one against
Russia. At the end of the day, it will just come down to who is in
better form and who holds their nerve better".

Agustin Calleri said: "Max on this quick surface will be very
dangerous. It would be very difficult to beat him"

I know, and in fact, i'm not mad at him because he's not playing the DC... i'm mad at him cuz.. you know, from the begining he said that the "Injury" was just a little pain, it was nothing... then he said that he could play the ATP of buenos aires (which i went to see and it would have been SO much better with him) and he didn't.. then the same with indian wells, with the nasdaq-100.. and finally he says he's not gonna play the DC. I mean, it's okay if he's injured or whatever, i know it's not his fault, but he could have said that he wasn't sure if he was actually gonna play the DC because of the injury, y'know... at least Gustavo Luza would had been able to find a better replace for nalbandian (i'm not saying that mónaco's not a good player.. but zabaleta is pretty much better).
Now, u understand why i'm "mad" at Nalbandian?

No, I don't really understand Carito - sorry. Perhaps his Doctors were giving him false hope - telling him he would be OK sooner than he was. Or maybe it was just that he was so desparate to play (especially in Bs As and Davis Cup), that he was doing some "positive thinking" in the hope that the injury would go in time. Anyway - the original ankle injury was completely healed before Davis Cup - what he has now is a different, new injury in the same area. I have met David - and I know he has the greatest respect for his country and for all his fans - he would never have done or said anything that would knowingly cause them to be upset.

But i cant help it.. i'm so dissapointed.. i know maybe it's not his fault at all, but i'm just so sad... if we don't pass the quaterfinals then i'll have to wait untill next year to watch some live tennis and i dunno how much time to meet andy roddick :(

Carito, I'm also from Argentina and I also went to the ATP Bs As, I'm a huge David fan and I wanted to see him play more than anything else, and that didn't happen. And trust me, I want to see him play in September here in Argentina. But I'm sure it's not his fault, he withdrew from a lot of tournaments this year due to an injured he suffered because of a match that he play in the DC. He injured while playing in Morocco. He's been saying how much he wanted to play and the same DC medical team told him he was not able to play. He has a different injury now, in the same ankle. I think you should think a little bit about this before insulting someone.
If you want to do that, why don't you start with Chela? After all he's perfectly fine and doesn't want to play, and now Cañas is going, so let's hope not just that we win, but that he doesn't get injured again because he has had enough already.

What's the problem with Gaudio?

You don't remember what happened when he lost 14 games in a row against JCF in the first singles rubber. That has affected his play ever since, I mean it wasn't just for himself that he let down and that's what makes it worse, that plus the Russia thing has had two horrible DC experiences.

He wasn't mentally there for the 5th match, and yes Moya played well in that match, but Gaudio took the brunt of that defeat, so he hasn't recovered mentally and I don't think would be asked back to play anytime soon unfortunately for him.

OK - fair enough - I have exactly the same feelings about Andy Roddick - I just DO NOT like him  - so guess we all have our views. Suppose we all just got upset because even if you have a personal dislike of someone it still isn't fair to accuse them of doing something that they haven't done.
