Greg has been injured and will be retiring after Wimbledom this year. He returns to action in two weeks time to play a Challenger event in Sarajevo, Bosnia where he is seeded 14. He will then play a Davis Cup World Group Promotion tie against Holland in Birmingham in April. Greg will then play Queens Club and Nottingham before ending his career at Wimbledon in June.

Sad, but it has to be done.

how will he enter wimbledon? his ranking will be in the 300-400 region and no way should a "home county" player get a WC into a gs ranked that low(unless he won 9 futures tournaments in a row..)!

He probably will get a wc but he could easily qualify if he had to

He wouldn't qualify easily.. Greg never impressed at Wimbledon..Lost to an outform Schuettler, eg.

Should hope for a WC and with a little bit of luck he could enter the cc again

qualies is played at Roehampton. Even faster courts. Greg would sail through.

But if he plays He'll get a main draw WC so its irrelevant

Many many british players have gotten wild cards to play in the main draw at Wimbledon in the past with just such a ranking. Sometimes worse.

He'll get a wildcard. He certainly deserves it more than some of the spares who have been given WC's at Wimbledon and the other Slams in the world. the guy was number 4 in the world and although I was never a massive fan of his game, he's always going to get a Wimbledon WC. And he should - he's done a lot for the British DC team, he's a GS finalist and he's been injured.

I think the whole WC system needs over-hauled all over though but as long as it's there, home assosciations are rightly or wrongly going to favour their own players. Which is why guys like Donald Young have had what seems like 10 ATP wildcards (give or take) and the like without winning a match and barely winning a set.

Greg has been a good citizen for the UK, and always held up his end of the bargain, playing for DC etc. Plus, with the added information that this is his last Wimbledon, and given that he has done Okay in the main draw previously, it is not such a stretch to give him a WC at Wimbledon.
Sadly, I think it will amount to nothing and he will not last till the end of the first week.

damn good question. maybe when he doesnt get selected to play any live rubbers in DC he will go. lets face it, even with his serve he will do shit all on grass so he might as well bow out now, before his ranking drops even further

Its not so bad these days. They set a limit on giving the same players wc's every year unless they show serious improvement and they play a WC tournament with domestic players for another one.

This year the likely candidates will all be capable of winning a round at least(depending on their draw)

Rusedski also has a wildcard into Indian Wells qualifying...

I can't believe they wasted a WC on him. Ugh.

I hate it when players who don't know when to leave suck up WCs that could go to young players.

Greg has pulled out of Indian Wells sadly due to lack of fitness. He still hopes to play the Sarajevo Challenger next week before the Davis Cup tie against Holland in April.

Greg has done an awful lot for British tennis - he spearheaded the revival of the late 1990s and increased the British interest in tennis - before Henman/Murray.

Well he's clearly going to get fitter sitting at home not playing than he would playing matches. The guy wants to retire, which is fair enough but this whole entitlement thing he's working where he's refused to play challengers until now and ATP qualies because he thinks he should be getting maindraw WCs is annoying the hell out of me.

He'd probably have a better chance of winning a match than some Donald Young type player...come on.

Besides, he is a former finalist / winner I think...or I may be confusing it with Miami.

If he had worked hard over the off-season, I don't think it is unfair to expect the ATP to throw him WCs...after all, he was screwed by most people post-nandralone exhoneration.

But I still think he should get a couple outside of the UK...we have given WCs to other nationalities in the past, and we never seem to get anything back in return

I know, but you have to remember, he's got a bit of a reputation of being quite difficult so I'm not sure there are going to be many people bending over backwards to accomodate him. It's the whole 'be nice on the way up because you'll meet them all on the way down' scenario.

There were weak ATP fields he could have qualified for (I mean Boggo qualified for one afterall), there were plenty of challengers he could have got in and I'm sure if he had wanted to play doubles to get match fitness at ATP level events he could have found himself a partner. I just don't think he seems that interested at the moment. I think for him to expect to be part of the DC team is pretty optimistic.

Apparently he is travelling to Indian Wells now. But the WC has gone to someone else I am led to believe.

Confusing situation

Maybe he's doing commentary? Really puzzling. Has the last MD WC been allocated? Maybe he's managed to wangle that and that's why he's suddenly fit.

wait a minute this player lost a first round challenger level match this week and people think hat he(british number 7) will/should get a W/C into wimbledon?! madness.

He is only playing on until wimbledon just to be eligible for his ATP pension anyway because is days are numbered.
