Instructions on how to play and Rules

You must Choose one Men player of your like. You will be awarded 400 points to be distributed among 4 surfaces (Hard, Clay, Grass, and Indoor). You may put a maximum of 115 points to one surface and a minimum of 90. You will also be awarded one Tiebreak Bonus which you will assign to one of 4 surfaces. These points will be distributed only once and may not be rearranged.

Scoring System
When sending in points, you must split your surface points into three sets, 5 for Grand Slams.

51 pts. or more - the set is 6-0
41-50 - the set is 6-1
31-40 - the set is 6-2
21-30 - the set is 6-3
16-20 - the set is 6-4
10-15 - the set is 7-5
7-9 - the set is 7-6(0)
6 - the set is 7-6(1)
5 - the set is 7-6(2)
4 - the set is 7-6(3)
3 - the set is 7-6(4)
2 - the set is 7-6(5)
1 - the set is 7-6(6)

You will send points for each match you play and be compared with your opponentĺs points.

For example :

PLAYER A send :

1. 20
2. 70
3. 10

PLAYER B send :

1. 3
2. 91
3. 6

PLAYER A won 6:4 3:6 7:6(3)

TieBreak System
This system is applied when there is no difference.
Each player has bonus Tiebreak in one surface. The one with the Bonus on Tiebreak will win it by 9-7. If no player has bonus on tiebreak the lower ranked will pass through with a tiebreak of 10-8. If both have bonus tiebreak the highest ranked player will pass through with an 11-9 tiebreak.

Extra Bonus
Player ranked First will have 5 points more on each surface.
Players ranked Second-Fifth will have 3 points more on each surface.
Players ranked Sixth-Tenth will have 1 point more on each surface.
Players playing at local tournaments will have a 2 point bonus.

Placing players in the draws

Doubles

In Doubles points will be an average of the two players playing in each team.

Hope you comment and or suggest about the rules.

Let me ask some quetions:
The player I picked doesn't have to be in the event, right?
It doesn't change if my player plays better on hard, clay or grass, picking a player is just a way of playing with someone i like??

maybe this will sound like a very stupid question..but when I put 30 pts on a set, does it matter who wins that set, or only if I got the score right???

Extra Bonus

Players playing at local tournaments will have a 2 point bonus.

There are a few things in the rules I can't quite understand but I'm not going to worry about it as I may be able to understand when the game is working... but one thing I do have ask about is in relation to the bonus points above.

I assume the first 3 mean that the winner and so on get bonus points for the next tournament they play in (and only that tournament??). But the 4th one listed puzzles me... players playing at local tournaments get 2 bonus points for the week they are playing at home? That seems a little unfair considering countries like America have a LOT of tournaments whereas other countries only have one tournament a year. That's how I understand your rules to mean, correct me if I'm wrong.

The one with more points in each set wins the set. Its all about that.

Correct.
The thing of American players I thought about putting a negative bonus for american players playing outside the USA. This bonus would be of -1. And South American players playing in any pÓrt of South America having +2, and playing in their own country +4.
I think with this it should be balanced.

The South American idea doesn't sound right, because then what about Europeans? They should then be getting +2 for anywhere in Europe and +4 for their own country!

Some countries like Romania ;), Croatia, Russia only have 1 or 2 tournaments and others I'm sure don't have any (I can't think right now).

Also, not sure about the negative bonus outside the USA... the US may have more tournaments than everywhere else... but a neg bonus in EVERY non US tournament might be quite a big disadvantage.

I know it's hard to balance out... but does there really need to be a bonus for home players? Forgive me if I'm sounding annoying, it's just it's a suggestion thread and I'm just voicing some thoughts ;)

Its ok, suggest as much as you want.
A bonus for playing at home should be awarded because it is much more realistic.

mmm
What do you think about this?

Usa players playing at home +1
Europeans playing at Europe +1
Europeans playing at home +2
South Americans playing at home +3
South Americans playing at South America +2
Asians playing at Asia +2

hmm it all seems just about right as far as I can see... but Asia should become Australasia because there needs to be an advantage for Australian tournaments/players as well :)

I again want to query the use of bonus points.

There seems to have been a lot of confusion at Estoril this week because bonus points have been a lot less than usual. For my singles match during the week I (Pavel) was given 2 bonus points... +1 for my 6th-10th ranking in singles and +1 for being a European playing in Europe. When asked why my +5 points weren't being added as well for my #1 doubles ranking I was told that I would get 6 bonus points for my doubles match but still only the 2 for my singles match.... this is not the way it has worked the past.

I went back to the Miami FMTA thread to find these posts:
http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=5057907&postcount=65
How does the top 5 work? Is it just for singles? and if it is for singles... there is obviously the winner and runner up, the 2 semi-finalists... but next is 4 quarter-finalists so how would you determine who was the 5th best?
Both Singles and Doubles. Lets say you are #1 in Singles and #1 in Doubles you get points for #1 doubled. This points can be applied both for singles and doubles. The 5th best will be including ties. So all players reaching quarterfinals in singles or better and doubles semifinals or better you get bonus points.

http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=5080590&postcount=78
Seededs:
#1 Joachim Johansson (Sweden)............................110(TB)+5+3 = 118(TB)
#2 Juan Ignacio Chela (Argentina)........................105+3 = 108
#3 Gael Monfils (France).................................110+3 = 113
#4 Mikhail Youzhny (Russia)..............................115(TB)+3+1 = 118(TB)
#5 Andrei Pavel (Romania)................................110(TB)+3 +5 = 118
#6 Flavio Saretta (Brazil)...............................95+3 = 98
#7 Igor Andreev (Russia).................................115(TB)+3 = 118(TB)
#8 Paul Capdeville (Chile)...............................115(TB)+3 = 118

It shows here that singles AND doubles matches bonus points were added together for use in singles AND doubles matches... therefore all the bonus points were wrong for this week because I only got +2 and I saw also that Coria only got +3 when he is joint #1 for doubles so also should have got at least 5 bonus points.

The only aspect lacking with bonus points is the clarity. This should be clearly defined within the template for each tournament thread which has not been done lately. All this confusion can easily be avoided. It's upto the managers.

ExcaliburII

It should be as it was in Miami, and all other tournaments. The problem was the bonus points were not clear. I passed rankings through the excell to AllezAlejo so not all of us knew the points.

At rome this will be correctly done.

Ok, it's just that you also PMed me telling me that I had 2 bonus points this week when I queried when I should have actually had 7

I hope it will all be fixed up in the future :yeah:

Since I am anti-bonus points in a big way, it just makes the game less fair and continues the cycle, but they seem to be here to stay for the moment.

So how about giving bonus points to players who beat the top ones? You know to the players that don't have them, but somehow manage to win.

ExcaliburII

Propose a system. I am thinkikng about, each time you defeaat a Top5 you earn 1 bonus point for the following 3 tournaments.

the bonus point system is like the new masters series draw of giving the top 8 byes into the 2nd rd.

I can't propose one actually, cause the only solution I'd be happy with, is the elimination of bonus points. At the very least it should be voted on by the FMTA players in a poll.

1 bonus point isn't going to be of any major benefit.

ExcaliburII
05-12-2007, 03:16 PM
