TOO BIG from Mardy, firing 22 aces, not facing a single break point and losing only 1 point on his first serve. A good win over the talented youngster. Mardy close to breaking into the top 20 already this year.

Congrats Mardy scoobs 02-22-2007, 07:24 PM Very nice. I expected JMDP to offer a bit more but got blitzed in the first set, kept the second tight. Tiebreak could have gone either way, but Fish took it in the end. R.Federer 02-22-2007, 07:25 PM That's an excellent win. Good for him! Hendu 02-22-2007, 07:25 PM Tough match for Del Potro with Fish serving like that. Congrats to the North American. GlennMirnyi 02-22-2007, 07:25 PM Del Pony! Hendu 02-22-2007, 07:26 PM Del Pony! I thought you would like Del Potro. Jaap 02-22-2007, 07:30 PM Expected win it has to be said. Horatio Caine 02-22-2007, 07:34 PM Nice win Mardy!! :yeah: Did he serve-volley or play from the baseline? tangerine_dream 02-22-2007, 07:34 PM Woot, Mardy :rocker: A year ago he would've lost that set but he's hanging tough. LocoPorElTenis 02-22-2007, 07:37 PM Pescado :hatoff: Too bad JMDP wasn't able to take the tb, but not an unexpected result. alfonsojose 02-22-2007, 07:38 PM Granny Legs :yeah: :rolls: Blue Heart24 02-22-2007, 07:49 PM Mardy :D He is very good this year. Awfully overhyped. The new Nalbandian. Hendu 02-22-2007, 10:25 PM Awfully overhyped. The new Nalbandian. I hope he is the new Nalbandian. Because of style of play, I thought you would like him. NYCtennisfan 02-22-2007, 11:47 PM Both San Jose and Memphis are playing really, really fast this year. It almost reminds me of yesteryear when all the indoor events would be played on carpet and be lightning fast. Good win for Fish and a great comeback in general to be flirting with the top 20. Deboogle!. 02-23-2007, 01:16 AM Great for Mardy :) If he could consistently get his first serve % up above 50%, he would have such better results. Nice win Mardy!! :yeah: Did he serve-volley or play from the baseline?I've never seen Mardy not serve-volley at least somewhat on a faster surface Both San Jose and Memphis are playing really, really fast this year. It almost reminds me of yesteryear when all the indoor events would be played on carpet and be lightning fast. Really? Andy said he prefers the Memphis surface and feels more comfortable because he feels like he can actually play tennis on it. He referred to the San Jose surface as "ice skating" last night. I'm getting the feeling that Memphis is not nearly as fast as San Jose was this year (it used to be faster than San Jose of course). oscar_2424 02-23-2007, 01:17 AM nice win. ChinoRios4Ever 02-23-2007, 01:19 AM pescado :yeah: 22 aces  NYCtennisfan 02-23-2007, 02:37 AM Great for Mardy :) If he could consistently get his first serve % up above 50%, he would have such better results. Memphis is not playing as fast as San Jose, but still a lot faster compared with previous years. Gilbert used to mention that Roddick liked the medium paced courts since he knew that he could always generate pace on the serve on any court while the slower court helped his return game. I hope we get to see another Andy vs. Andy matchup. :) Deboogle!. 02-23-2007, 03:19 AM Memphis is not playing as fast as San Jose, but still a lot faster compared with previous years. Interesting. That's a permanent racquet club so it seems odd that they would change the surface suddenly like that. Maxpowers 02-23-2007, 03:24 AM I'm really happy he won today. I hope he does well in Miami this year after his impressive results so far. I've never seen him win a main draw match in person (lost to Haas and Davydenko the last 2 years when I've seen him). Julio1974 02-23-2007, 11:11 AM I hope he is the new Nalbandian. Because of style of play, I thought you would like him. me too !! That would be more than enough for me. joeb_uk 02-23-2007, 12:18 PM Never seen the goggle monster play, but a bashing from Fish doesn't give me much hope. Not sure whether to believe the hype. Clara Bow 02-23-2007, 01:21 PM Never seen the goggle monster play, but a bashing from Fish doesn't give me much hope. Not sure whether to believe the hype. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the youngest member of the top 100 as just hype and someone for who there is no real hope just yet. :) He was beaten by someone who is playing with good from and what sounds like his most confidence ever. And I think it is good for Juan Martin that after being crushed in the first set- he made a real fight of it in the second. Mardy is playing well- his serve percentages are up, which is key for him. So I think it is also unfair to Mardy to say a loss to him means that JMDP is all hype. As a fan of JMDP- I am not yet ready to declare that his career will be a disappointment after this result. ;) I don't expect for him to win everything in sight as he is in the beginning stages of his career, he is still quite young and you need to give players time to develop on tour -and sometimes to get used to their still growing bodies. There was a You Tube clip of him playing Melzer in the DC floating around on one of the DC threads if you are interested. Fish does: Fish had praise for the youngest player in the ATP Top 100 Rankings: "This is the best start I’ve ever had. I knew today going in that he’s the youngest guy in the Top 100 and there’s an obvious reason for that," said Fish. "I think anyone watching the match can see that this kid is going to be real good. I’ve played quite a few more matches out here than he has and feel like I can understand situations a little more than he can but that will change for sure. I have a lot of respect for that kid what he’s done already. It speaks volumes that he’s 18 years old and I can’t even fathom doing that at 18. I was struggling to win matches in qualies and Futures. I’ve got a lot of respect for guys that come up that early. Everyone can see he’s got a good game and that was a tough one to get through today and a day when I knew it would be one of the tougher matches I’d have in the tournament." I♥PsY@Mus!c 02-23-2007, 03:42 PM Del Potro :smash: *Ljubica* 02-23-2007, 03:44 PM Why not? Thanks very much for sharing that Deb. I will paste it into JM's Forum if that's OK with you. I am no fan of Fish, but I know he is playing well at the moment, and never expected JM to beat him on a fast court. In fact, I am more than pleasantly surprised, that having been knocked off the court in the 1st set, JM came back to make it such a close thing in the 2nd set. He had a set point, and finally lost the breaker 9-11. As Clara Bow said, JM is still so young, and he is still growing, and learning. He is taking every match as experience, and at that age - some you win, and some you lose. To dismiss his talent and potential, on the grounds of one defeat in one match to someone on top form, is simply stupid. Deboogle!. 02-23-2007, 03:50 PM Thanks very much for sharing that Deb. Won't somebody please upload some of his highlights to YouTube? :awww: But now thanks to TTC (which I, like millions of other Americans, don't have) taking RG off of ESPN's hands, I'll probably never see him play. :o Julio1974 02-23-2007, 04:38 PM Yeah, a player like Fish = nothing special at all. As simple as that. As for the so called personal attacks, there is a huge need when they are playing a huge part in why she is trolling about JMDP all over the shop. Why don't have a look at the players Federer lost against when he was 18???? GlennMirnyi 02-23-2007, 04:40 PM Why don't have a look at the players Federer lost against when he was 18???? Why this completely out of place comparison? Federer is a late bloomer. joeb_uk 02-23-2007, 04:43 PM Why this completely out of place comparison? Federer is a late bloomer. You could also question that because of the advances, Federers period at 18 is far different than the present day. Players are a lot more advanced at a younger age these days, in many sports, both mentally and physically. Julio1974 02-23-2007, 04:45 PM Why this completely out of place comparison? Federer is a late bloomer. You are just confirming my point. You can't predict if a player will be a superstar or not just by judging his results when he's 18. He has never seeen JMDP playing, so he should at least watch him a couple of times and then give his opinion. GlennMirnyi 02-23-2007, 04:45 PM You could also question that because of the advances, Federers period at 18 is far different than the present day. Players are a lot more advanced at a younger age these days, in many sports, both mentally and physically. Probably, but then people will call the Chang argument and all. There are players that bloom early and there are players that bloom later. There's no big deal there. :) Julio1974 02-23-2007, 04:46 PM You could also question that because of the advances, Federers period at 18 is far different than the present day. Julio1974 02-23-2007, 04:49 PM You can't, but Del Pony is overrated as hell. That's a different point. You have wached him playing and your opinion is valid. In my view, it's impossible to predict whether he will be a top 5 player or not. As I said before, I'm almost sure he will be a top 20 player and more than likely a top 10, but that's all I would dare to predict. *Ljubica* 02-23-2007, 08:10 PM I have yet to see JMDP play too and I really want to. Won't somebody please upload some of his highlights to YouTube? :awww: But now thanks to TTC (which I, like millions of other Americans, don't have) taking RG off of ESPN's hands, I'll probably never see him play. :o Try this when you have a moment - it's from the DC tie in Austria :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxg2CD1p8wc And yes Deb, he will be in Indian Wels, but obviously playing in the early rounds over the first days as his ranking was in the 80's when the cut-off date for IW was done. LocoPorElTenis 02-23-2007, 08:38 PM This is unreal. An 18 year old kid loses to a solid player playing on home soil and firing over 2 aces per serving game... and some people conclude he is done  Grow up... if you say we have to wait to see if JMDP is any good I will agree (although he's already top 70... which is not bad), but to say that JMDP will never be any good because of this loss is :retard: | |
