(LL)L Dlouhy (CZE) replaced N Lapentti (ECU) (left hip)...

edit: Devilder goes through, still a joke that you had 2 players playing for just 20 points... pathetic...

Devilder goes through to quarters.

oh, why? because ferrero beat a LL?

Yes, Devilder went through. This was basically dead match (which it wouldn't have been if Lapentti stayed in) and Ferrero knew so beforehand, that's why he was kind of angry.

Right. Because one player retired, only the match between Ferrero and Devilder now counts, so Devilder goes through.

So in fact both players were out of contention even before the match started. A jewel of RR.

Ferrero didn't even want to plat, but finally he was convinced.

RR is a farse, but anyway congrats for JCF, hope he can make sth out of it...

The title should be corrected. Ferrero did NOT advance, Devilder did. And yes, RR is a farse.

omg, so ferrero paid a heavy price for his RR miscalculations in his last match.... wow :o

I know he didn't, but he stopped losing in 1R. I hope it's just the first step, but as far as I know, those RG winners hardly ever go back on top

it needs to be said, at least i can't complain about RR being predictable, and disadvantaging the small guy

here we have the opposite effect, totally unexpected, and probably against the intention of the organisers who put the system in :tape:

ps. maybe the system can be 'enhanced' by closing this 'loophole'... it should make sure that if one player in the group pulls out, the remaining higher ranked player will advance ;)

Lapentti beated Devilder, Devilder beated Ferrero...

Ferrero had chances to qualify by beating Lapentti, but the player from Ecuador withrawed.

So Ferrero had to play a death match with Dlouhy (the replacement), and the Spanish didn't want to play the match, but the organization was able to convince him, and the match started with an hour of delay.

Then Devilder dissapeared, the organization had no idea of where he was. The rumour was that he was already outside the country, because he thought he was out of the tournament. Ferrero was pissed off, because he was going through to quarters because of the retirement of two players.

Finally, Devilder communicated with the organization and will play the quarterfinal.

well i'm very happy for Nicolas, but this RR is really a joke. Ferrero was unable to even try to qualify because of another player's withdrawal. pathetic. get rid of this shit.

This was appauling. And firstly some people seem to be saying that it's JC's fault for miscalculating the situation. It isn't! None of the players are to blame for this blunder, and why is it always Ferrero who gets stuffed around? Good on JC for arguing about playing the match, it was stupid that he had to play it. The RR format is screwed up, and of course the players, and the fans are suffering so RR benefits nobody but the crap guys.

JC should have been through to the quarters, which would have at least given the Buenos Aires crowd some quality tennis. So JC loses and the crowd loses, because if JC had gotten through this round, chances are the tournament would have been his, and us Ferrero fans would have had our first title in ages!

And congrats to JC for winning this match so easily. This incident seems to overshadow the credit he deserves for his win!!!

Hilarious. Sounds like a Monty Python-sketch.

Oops! It really happened???

I feel sorry for JC - however nice his victory is, and it's great to see him doing well again - this whole fiasco must surely leave him a bad taste in the mouth.

Situation in this group was hilarious :)
Someone said that Ferrero had tanked after 2nd set vs. Devilder because he wanted to save his energy before match against Lapentti. I don't know, maybe Ferrero did it. However Lapentti's withdrew is a proof that combinations with "saving energy" is very wrong. Congrats to -der - first QF :yeah:
